Having now been an Elvis fanatic for 62 years , I know that he kept his political opinions to himself and made that known in the very few interviews that he gave, but against advice he broke away and through his music interpretations as a tribute to Dr Martin Luther King he recorded "If I Can Dream" 1968, now 2022 with what's happening worldwide we are still sharing that dream, and with poverty again against advice he recorded "In The Ghetto", and still we are all sharing that dream too, Elvis Presley was a one off showman and to date 2022 has amassed sales nearing 2 Billion worldwide, Elvis left the building nearly 45 years ago, but he remains as popular now as he did then, so in reality Elvis has not left the building and with the Baz Luhrmann biopic film "Elvis" due out late June this year will showcase to a new generation the impact that this poor southern white boy raised on Gospel and Blues remains the most successful male solo recording artist ever.

Steve. It's ironic because today's left wing democrat party IS responsible for spreading the bullshit propaganda and lies about elvis presley, simply because he was white. There's no such thing as "culture appropriation" It's pure bullshit propaganda. Want proof? Ella Fitzgerald didn't write songs either, in fact, 900 of her songs were written by whites, yet no mention of her being guilty of "culture appropriation" Elvis was white, and THAT'S why the democrats use that made up term. "Culture appropriation" Healthy minded people are becoming increasingly aware of the mentally unstable left.

The thing about Elvis is he made you BELIEVE what he was saying. He came from the deepest poverty, in the south, during the worst parts of segregation, and as a child, embrace and sought out the culture. He was well- aware of the struggle. He never forgot where he came from and called people sir and ma'am until the day he died. Aside from his personal struggles, he was REAL!

When Elvis came out of the Army he recorded his best work I think. A lot of people think his post army years were not his best but his voice matured and he took it to a whole new level. Reconsider Baby, Washed my Hands in Muddy Water, She thinks I Still Care omg that song breaks my heart, Stranger in My Own Hometown, Feels So Right. Just a few songs to get the feel of total Elvis.

This song was written specifically for Elvis to end his 1968 Comeback Special. Elvis always sings with so much passion & I read after performing this song he actually collapsed. The writers had worked with Elvis throughout the special & got to know him & his heart. That time with him inspired the writer(s) to come up with the words to the song. It's a beautiful song & I love watching him perform it on KZbin.🙏

Thanks again Captain. Your research is correct. The colonel absolutely did not want Elvis to perform this song. But here’s the thing, Elvis was very respectful to others. That’s how he was raised. At the same time, he would not allow others to dictate to him what he could and could not do. He understood early in his career who he was and what power he had over his own career. If he wanted to perform a song, not even the colonel was going to tell him no. Being raised in Tupelo and being dirt poor, much of his youth was spent with the black children who lived in nearby ghettos. He knew their plight and that never left him. He was scheduled to perform at the Astrodome in Texas and was told he could leave the black girls (the sweet inspirations) at home. His simple response…If they can’t perform, I don’t either. I am paraphrasing but to Elvis, it truly was that simple. Color didn’t matter to him nor should it us. I don’t want to offend anyone but racism in this country is, was and always will be politically driven. The truth of the matter is, there is only 1 race, the human race. We are all part of God’s creation and are required by His Holy law to treat each other as such. If I may be so bold as to loosely quote Dr Martin Luther King… It’s not the color of a man’s skin but his character. To you the reader, be a person of character and raise your children in the same way. That’s how we defeat racism. That’s how we defeat hatred. That’s how we grow love. Thank you Captain Tom and keep your responses coming. Accept your blessings today my friend.

I remember when Dr. King was assainated. I had just arrived at work and sat in my car and cried. It was the saddest day for civil rights and equality ever. Had he lived, I feel we wouldn't be where we are now. I am 73 now and my heart hurts for the divide. Now they say "if you don't see color, you are a racist". I have never looked at anyone that way. I look at their eyes and smile and talk with them. If your heart is right and you have compassion, that makes me like you. I have many friends across the spectrum of color and I would like them to think of me ad a good person.

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis’s love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination. Just 9 miles away from Graceland (Elvis’s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck, was for them.

It was Parker that wanted the Comeback Special to be a Perry Como type Christmas Special but Elvis and producer Steve Binder ( who was only 24 then) had other ideas. One of the few times that Elvis got his way with Parker. Parker did manage to persuade Elvis to put in a Christmas song during the Special though during the sit-down segment when Elvis performed Blue Christmas.
