Elvis sang this song right after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was such a dark time and so many had lost hope, then Elvis sang this song on national TV and lifted the hearts of a nation. I believe this song about "his dream" for a better world coming true was referencing Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. I saw Elvis live in concert in 1972 and 1977, and he was a phenomenal singer and entertainer! There has never been and will never be another talent like him. I grew up listening to Elvis courtesy of my dad who was the Ultimate Elvis Fan, but I fell in love with Elvis' Gospel music first. I believe God intended Elvis to be the World's Greatest Gospel Singer, and Elvis became the Father of contemporary Gospel music. When Elvis came on the scene, Gospel music was regional, but Elvis made it international and won 3 Grammy awards for his two gospel songs and the How Great Thou Art album. Thanks again for introducing Elvis to the younger generation! Blessings, T.

I absolutely love your heartfelt reaction to this song by Elvis. It's so gratifying to see other people effected as much as I was. I discovered this video back in 2008, while singing as a regular at karaoke, and I was so moved, I learned it, as accurately in his delivery as possible. It was a workout - not only singing-wise, but emotionally - it brings up feelings that both added power to my voice, and other parts would suck the wind right out of me, and I would start sobbing - and have to stop, take a break, and try again. When I finally felt ready, after working this song for a week or more, I sung it at open-mic night, and was so energized by it, I nailed it, full voice, all my feeling came thru full force. I don't do Elvis impersonations or anyone else, but when I find someone's performance of a song that just absolutely sends me - I just have to emulate them as closely as possible; I want to sound like THAT... Elvis did the same thing, with opera singers especially, later in his life. He met a guy named Roy Hamilton, and I kid you not - Elvis spent the remaining years working up that crazy-good vibrato... emulating Hamilton's style very, very closely. Here's the link to Roy Hamilton's song that caught my attention, so much that I edited my own video of Hamilton, leading to my discovering these two met and became friends; kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZXKnKyQacagiZo Elvis knew what worked, and was an incredible student of singing. I think he was the greatest self-taught singer of all. So I took his example, and sang that song, breath for breath, exactly like him, and for the first time, I had people coming up to me smiling thru tears, crying, thanking me. In that moment, I finally understood what it felt like to be a conduit, part of something so big, that I had just been picked up by, carried for a bit, and put gently back down again, on the ground. This is a very special song.

He wanted his audience to walk away feeling like it was the first show they attended every time he performed. When he was on stage nothing else mattered but the fans. "If I Can Dream" was written by Walter Earl Brown with Presley in mind for the grand finale on NBC's "Elvis", known as Elvis' ‘68 Comeback Special (June 20-23). After Presley heard the demo, he proclaimed "I'm never going to sing another song I don't believe in. I'm never going to make another movie I don't believe in." In his nine years remaining, he kept his promise. Being the grand finale of the 1968 Elvis special is why Elvis says "Thank you, good night." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Can_Dream)

This was a 6 months after Martin Luther King died! His manager insisted this song not be done on special, to only do xmas songs- He grew up with black friends and was directly inspired and learned from black artists. He had a huge heart and expressed he wanted to sing something from his heart, like gospel he grew up on! He was so broken hearted and recoded this song two months after MLK passed as a result of his support and emotional connection with black people! This was one of the most powerful protest songs, written for him by his pal to express his hurt and dissapointment in the war and the trauma in the USA- Mainly about Hatred! "If I Can Dream" was written by Walter Earl Brownm it was notable for its similarities with Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech.. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, just two months after King's assassination. This makes the song even more legendary ! Thats why we feel all his compassion in the delivery! His manager threatened to fire him if he did this and he did it anyways! All his recordings are brilliant ,"In the ghetto is my fav" another song written directly for his compassion for the disenfranchised ! He was such a kind human! This comeback special has his most powerful songs because they were blues and gospel the two things he leaned from the black community! People say he appropriated black culture! Well he did and always paid homage! The trtuh is black pople started rock and roll! Little Richard and Sister Rosetta Tharpe! Elvis grew up poor and could relate! Truly an icon!

I watched this performance at the age of 13, although already totally a fan of Elvis and blown away, I never realized the true significance of this song until many years later. Thank you for your recognition of his vocal and impassioned performance.

He's the greatest singer, performer with the biggest heart. Check out Elvis' generosity and the things he did for people with out anybody knowing about it. I heard recently that Elvis encountered a young child at his concert that was blind. He got on stage and hugged her and gave her a scarf. Then after the show she was asked backstage to see Elvis. Elvis gave her a check for $50,000 and tickets to all his concerts and travel arrangements and accomodations. He had a giant loving heart.

Elvis didn't hoard up his money. He used to to make himself happy but also to help others and make others happy. He gave away massive amounts of money during his lifetime.

"That man is definitely The King." If I Can Dream is such a wonderful song, delivered with unbelievable passion and emotion from Elvis, as you noted. As many here will tell you, it was his tribute to Dr Martin Luther King, slain in that same year of 1968. The message is, sadly, as relevant as ever. Elvis didn't sing many socially conscious songs, but the few that he did haven't aged. That's both good (in terms of his music catalogue) and bad (in terms of society). You make so many pertinent observations and your shocked reaction reminds me of the first time I heard it decades ago; I couldn't believe it was the same Elvis Presley of Don't Be Cruel, It's Now Or Never and all those fluffy 1960s movies because this is next-level Elvis Presley. I wish we could've had more like it. I'm glad you will take a deep dive into more Elvis. Note - he's like a box of chocolates without the menu card; you just never know which Elvis you're going to get.

There is no mistaking this song was a straight up petition of prayer right from the stage and he even waves it out into the audience before he grounds that intention into the earth at the end. His energetic field is so vast and he wields it through his heart and throat chakra as he sings. A perfect example of sharing the gifts God gave you in service to others.
