Elvis is a phenomenon that happens once in a millennium. He passed away 42 years ago. He'll never be gone. I dont get racism either because even if a person of a different race commits a horrible crime against you, it's not their whole race that did it just the one individual. I learned that very young from my mother.

Just got off of work and having a few beers. I'm an Elvis fanatic. I love your reaction. I totally agree with you racism comment. I drove over the road for 7 years. I've been lost in Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, L.A. and every major city except north of New Jersey. And its usually been in "the worst neighborhoods". I've parked my truck and walked 2 to 3 blocks before I found someone to give me directions. I've never had a problem. Due to what the media and society wanted me to believe, I thought it was because I either looked like a badass or or people just thought I was some psycho that you just didn't want to mess with in the first place. But after a couple of times of showing respect, I was in turn, given respect. It got to the point I didn't worry about getting lost. I've have great conversations with total strangers. I've come to this conclusion...we're not divided racially as much as the media wants us to believe. I sat here watching you review this song and thought, during this time, what a better song to bring people together. We can stand together against governments that want to restrain and try to keep us divided and keep us living in fear We need to join as one country as Americans, against tyranny trying to restrain us.

In regards to your opening statements on racism, I feel the same way. I’m white, but I grew up not understanding racism, I didn’t understand why some people hated other people just because of where they come from or what color their skin is. It was always a mystery to me, and somewhat still is. I’m glad we had Elvis to promote equality, it’s sad that he’s not well remembered for that.
@lizrutherford26565 жыл бұрын
Elvis truly saw no color. He grew up in the poorest neighborhoods in Memphis, just like he did in Tupelo, and had many black friends, both growing up and as an adult. He went to black churches, which is where he found some of his moves. Black men tutored him as he grew as a musician in Memphis (pre-Sun records). Elvis was great admirer of MLK. MLK, not so much of Elvis (great article about MLK, Elvis and the song here: tinyurl.com/warayhd). Elvis was profoundly affected by the deaths of MLK and RFK. The Lorraine Motel is only nine miles from Graceland and Elvis was thoroughly upset that King's assassination happened in *his* city. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, wanted the special to end with "I'll Be Home For Christmas", since this aired in December 1968, but Elvis said he wanted to try "If I Can Dream". You also have to put this song into the year the special aired: 1968. 1968 was probably the most turbulent year of the 20th Century. The Vietnam war was broadcast into homes on a nightly basis--the first war to have that distinction--and Walter Cronkite made several reports from the front lines. Men burned draft cards. There were Vietnam protests on a daily basis in this country. King and Kennedy were assassinated two months apart. There were riots in D.C., Baltimore, Chicago and Kansas City after King's death. The 1968 Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago in August and that saw violence spill out onto the streets and to Lincoln Park because of anti-Vietnam protesters. My parents are of this era (Mom was 20, dad was 17 in 1968), and they will tell you all about what this country was in the late 1960s. A friend of my dad's, who was a year ahead of him in school, was KIA in Vietnam in 1970, and three of four friends that he ran around in high school with (all the same grade), served in Vietnam. My mom's brothers served stateside during Vietnam. My dad's number never came up, so he didn't serve. This song absolutely resonated then and it absolutely resonates now. Maybe someday, King's dream will come true.

At the end, not shown here, he throws that mic down, angrily. I learned how to love from Elvis, among other things. He loves MLK, as do I. When I was in Memphis, I visited two very important places. Where MLK (also where the civil rights museum is, a must visit!) was assassinated(and cried) and of course, Graceland. Both very moving in different ways. I highly, highly suggest a visit there. (Memphis) I’ve been twice, I’m going back again in January. I can’t go through the MLK assassination sight, it hurt too much to see his actual hotel room and last meal still there. There is so much history there. I want to respond to racism, I know my experiences cannot begin to compare with your, and led me be the first to say, I’m sorry you’ve even had to go through that. But, let’s not forget that it goes both ways. I know a lot of racist people of color and experienced first hand. I’m married to a Hispanic, who are also hated for their color. I don’t judge. The Bible says, “Judge not, lest ye be judged “... That has stuck in my mind in soul since I was a little girl. I do my best to live by that. You’re truly a genuine soul, I’m glad you’ve discovered the TRUS Elvis. Do a little research and find out just how much he love his fellow man. He was ahead of his time. That’s a promise! Love and blessings being send your way, in Jesus’ name. Amen 🙏🏼 ❤️ I’m also giving you a virtual hug.
