Elvis has been gone for 46 years, yet every year on the anniversary of his death, August 16, 1977 thousands of people flock to Memphis Tennessee to his home, Graceland to pay tribute to him. Everyday Elvis touches new people who discover him, every year thousands of new music fans become Elvis Presley fans and that’s why he’s the King of Rock N” Roll and always will be. 👑

Personally, I think this was his greatest performance of all time. He had many great moments, but there is so much raw emotion and passion in his voice. He wasn't just singing a song here, he was delivering a message the world needed then and still needs today.

I agree but damn. I could add up 50 more performances that fight for the throne. Elvis is and always will be the most talented entertainer. No one else can compare to the charisma and effort that Elvis put in. Even in Elvis’s worse days. unchained melody, bridge over troubled water, Polk salad Annie, American trilogy, what now my love, hurt, suspicious minds, and so many more
@SuperMonkeeGirl
@SuperMonkeeGirl 2 жыл бұрын
@@cpkarkow663 I think there are just some songs that can never be recreated. The raw emotion he sang with here would not have been able to be recreated. There's also the idea that with the song being such a statement song, it didn't really fit into the esthetic of Las Vegas, where most of his performances were after this special.

My first ever "favorite song" decided when I was only 4 years old. Elvis had long since passed. But my Dad was a fan and kept majority of his performances on VHS and so I got to experience Elvis throughout my lifetime, even if it was after his own had ended. This song holds a special place in my heart forever. I fell in love the moment I first saw this. So literally 30 years of love for this performance, this man. He is the King. Forever.

Thank Goodness someone else knows the truth ..... Hello Brother ...... As I post this .... All the time ...... If I Can Dream ..... Was written by Earl Brown ..... For ALL the trauma that was in the 60's created by the Deep State ...... The killings of John Kennedy ..... Robert Kennedy ..... Martin Luther King ..... And all the killing of the soldiers of the wars ..... As the red scarf Elvis wore was for the soldiers ..... It was written for those reasons ..... And not just for just one .... But all the killings ..... ..... Someone some-were along the line posted the rumor about it being for MLK .... And that rumor was born ..... However it was for all of it ..... So if you don't understand that the song was written for all the trauma of that era ..... And not just one after reading this posting ..... Then you don't know Elvis ..... Elvis was king of the world ..... And all of it hurt him as it did us all ..... UNDERSTAND ..... Kenneth you did Elvis proud with your posting ..... Thank You again Brother ...... Big N ......

For me the best vocalist ever and reason why: he mastered all genres of music, he could take a great song and make it greater, only artist to be in Rock'n roll, Country and Gospel hall of fame. Elvis is called the king for many reasons, and his regal voice has often been imitated but never duplicated. He did sing gospel in fact he grew up singing gospel in the black churches of Tupelo Mississippi, he loved gospel and its influence is in a LOT of his songs if you listen to the right ones. Elvis recorded over 700 songs in his life, had many gold and platinum records etc etc. in fact theres a room in Graceland with walls full of Gold records and music awards, he is the only entertainer to be in all four music halls of fame.

Regarding his legacy, that is probably one of the most unrecognized things about Elvis was his Humanity. He beat up a racist at the front gates of Graceland a year before this recording in 1967. A bigot named Troy Ivy was hurling racial slurs, when Elvis asked him to stop and the man continued, so Elvis tapped him on the chin...(so to speak lol). EP sent the guy running back for his car. Elvis was laughing - "that'll teach him not to come round here talking like that in the future". I've known about this for many years. But most people I've talked to, including Elvis historians, have no clue about it. He stood with the black members of his group when they were dealing with racism. They said how much it meant to them that Elvis had their backs. He also called out a number of people around him throughout the years on their bigotry when he witnessed it. I've been reading commentary regarding Elvis for decades. *Most of our pop-culture talking heads NEVER talk about THIS Elvis Presley* . It has bothered me for years that so many that has so much to say (or write) about Elvis (and this includes many Elvis historians for that matter) have ignored these important things. (Oh, they'll do it with *other* artists from that era...give them credit beyond the music, talking about the other positive things they stood for, or were about. But when comes to EP, it's like they don't want to give Elvis' humanity that credit, for some strange reason. Historians just keep overlooking things like I mentioned above). Says more about these "HISTORIANS" and our Culture .... than it says about Elvis. Anyway, again great break-down from you. I just wanted to add Elvis not only sang & embraced this song message, but he also stood on it's words. We say *actions* speak louder than words sometimes, well lot of people forget Elvis' *Actions* spoke volumes too. Always enjoy thoughtful commentary with reactions - (to any artist, not just Elvis reactions). Great job. Keep 'em coming.

@Jay Viviane Just so you know, I love your comment. Everything you have said is true. People need to be enlightened about Elvis' role in aiding the civil rights movement. I was so very fortunate to have seen Elvis in live concerts 3 times before his untimely death. He was truly the greatest entertainer that I ever witnessed in a live concert. He really was there for the audience. Each concert was an experience! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. 🙂

He never sang this song again. I love to see young people discovering Elvis. There will never be another like him. Great reaction. Check out American Trilogy, I’ll Remember You, You Gave Me A Mountain, My Way, Fever … to name a few … from the 1973 Aloha From Hawaii concert (the one with the lei around his neck). It was the first concert broadcast via satellite and was seen by more than a billion people all over the world. That’s billion with a “B.” Also keep in mind there was no auto tune back in the day. Other live performances to react to … Bridge Over Troubled Water, Just Pretend, How Great Thou Art.

It`s funny that you say that "They don`t show this side of Elvis". We, his fans have always known. And there`s a bunch of us out here. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, becomes famous like him for nothing. People just don`t dig deeper into stuff. But when they do, they soon realize that they are going down the rabbit hole. Elvis is sooo much more than just a singer or entertainer! I always cry, when I hear him singing this song. We were full of hope the world would be changing, after the cruelfully war - and than Martin Luther King and the Kennedys were assinated. I saw never my Mother cry, but in this time she did. And we are not Americans. I think he was nearly not be able to sing, so he shouted his sadness out - therefore his singing there was so epic. After the song, I heard, he broke down backstage and cried. Love from Austria 🇦🇹

I hear you! I'm from Australia and my Mother was distraught when MLK and JFK were assassinated. I was 9 years old and I cried then and even now whenever I hear Elvis sing "In the Ghetto." My granddaughter is now 9 and recently asked her mother "Why did black people have their own toilets and why did white people have their own shopping malls?" My daughter told her about how the world can be so unfair to some people. She told her about Emmeline Pankhurst (the women's suffragette) and about Martin Luther King, and they listened to parts of the "I have a dream" speech. After MLK says "We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality" my 9-year-old granddaughter said to her mother, "That's so sad Mum because I don't think the world has changed for them very much at all." Sadly, I think she's right.

Underappreciated? By whom? I've always heard great performers, musicians and critics, who have substance in the world, praising Elvis as the best. I think those are the opinions that count, not Joe down the street. There are many world-class singers who state Elvis was their influence. I think to say "...the most underappreciated vocalist OF ALL TIME." is just a throw-away, cliched, line without substance.

How can Elvis Presley not be in any top 10 list. The power, range and feel of his voice in, in my opinion, untouchable. To me he is the greatest singer who ever lived. I honestly can't think of anyone who is better. Sam Cooke would be the closest and just quietly how can Sam not be very, very high in that top 10 list. I love Otis Redding, but Sam Cooke had him done cold as a pure singer. And so did Elvis. I honestly think that people who don't really rate him really haven't listened to him. Or at least, they haven't listened to the right songs.

Sung live and in 1 take! This song was written especially for Elvis, just after the King Assasination for this special. He was a strong supporter of Civil Rights, growing up in Tupelo MS, and Memphis with an incredible black blues and gospel influence. I've subscribed in hopes of watching you discover Elvis's extraordinary talent. A little background info: he didn't have any formal music training. He not only sang many different genres of music (from the very beginning of his career) but also played several instruments by ear, arranged music, hand-picked his band and back-up singers and directed them with his body movements. He recorded 769 songs and is in these Music Halls of Fame: Rock 'N Roll, Country, Rhythm & Blues, Gospel, and Rockabilly. Gospel was his favorite. Luciano Pavarotti said "Elvis can sing like me, but I can't sing like him". An Elvis quote: "I wish I could play every instrument. I wish I knew every song".
