To most artists in the industry at the time, had they produced an exact replica of this recording, and Elvis had not recorded it, then it could be seen as an excellent first single. However, for Elvis, with a bar already set very high, this is essentially an unremarkable, run of the mill recording.
This is not to say that it is not a good recording, far from it, it is perfectly executed in all departments, from vocal to instrumentation to production. In comparison to those remarkable recordings of the March and April 1960, it is not on the same level. This is in keeping with this 12 March 1961 Nashville session in general, the wonderful There’s Always Me apart.
Elvis completed the song in eight takes, with the final take chosen as the master and it was the penultimate recording of twelve that evening.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
