Now then: I quite like Tony Bennett's 1955 version because I love the trumpet solo in the middle. I also quite like Harry James & His Orchestra instrumental version (1960's I forget what year specifically though). But I will also say that Elvis's version is hands down without a doubt my absolute favorite version of this song. I will also say that Elvis re- recorded this song in 1970 (released 1971) and the Take 5 version from that recording session I must admit is really, really my favorite version. He put this on another album from 1970 which by then his voice gets more and more remarkable. Seph, I didn’t know you were so romantic. You’re right. I still have love letters from my husband and their tied with a ribbon & you’re right on about how different it is today. We still write cards out on Anniversaries and Holidays, but texts are fast and to the point when needed. There’s no reason we can’t have both in our lives. Those notes he was holding were beautiful. I really like Elvis' voice! It's so deep and vibrating. His is a voice that to me seems to be able to express every emotion in the song perfectly. He always sounds sincere when he sings. Elvis was my first favourite singer. Later in life I added Neil Diamond and now Dimash! I may not have many favourite singers, but I have the best!😁🇨🇦

It is the beginning of the "mature" Elvis. I'm telling you, his voice just grew richer and once he got clear of the movies he was able to select his own material and express himself better. 68-73 were his comeback years. No more silly songs. Just serious, heartfelt music. Can't wait until you get to his Stax recordings, also the Memphis sessions. You are in for such a treat!!! You've been a joy to follow here!!! ✌️💕😁

How Great Thou Art album was 66 (released early 67) and songs on that esp How Great Thou Art, Somebody Bigger Than You and I and Where No One Stands Aone (plus You'll Never Walk Alone) have that deep Baritone sound - All 4 of them are absolute bonafide triple bangers.

Oh, I totally agree with the way you talked about letters. There is something beautiful about writing, receiving, sending letters. I love that you called it a work of art. This is another old song. It was written in 1945 and was the theme for a movie by the same name. It was nominated for an Oscar and sung by Dick Haymes. I wouldn’t be surprised if my parents took me to that movie, but I don’t remember. They loved musicals. I thought they were extremely boring. I remember thinking it was stupid to stop the movie to sing. Anyway, it is a sweet and lyrical love song that Elvis handles better than anyone else did - of course.

Yes agree with you all the way Seph. Reached number 5 in UK and 19 in US and a million seller. On the recording front film songs were recorded mainly in Hollywood while studio recordings like this in Nashville one of the homes of real music hence your observation in quality being spot on. Those in a hurry to 1968 want you to miss these gems and there are quite a few more to come before then.

He loved singing this song. He did it multiple times in his career. I like the way he emphasizes the word 'straight.' Sam Cooke, in his song Cupid, puts some verve in the word that I wish Elvis had done. I thought most Brits pronounce the 't.' But you said 'leher.' American usually turn the 't' to a 'd' sound except when a word starts with a t. So we pronounce the word as 'ledder.'

Great reaction, Seph :) Thank you! This is one of my absolute favorite Elvis songs. When my husband (then boyfriend) was in the army, for 18 months, 800 km away from home, I wrote him more than 600 letters (at least 3 pages long with added illustrations) to ease his homesickness. And he wrote me around 600 letters back. I couldn`t call him during his service, and he couldn`t call me. Cell phones and the internet haven`t been invented yet, and during those 18 months, we saw each other twice. That was hard... I`ve read every line many times :))) So, I can relate to the content of this song. I have boxes full of letters and postcards that family members and friends wrote me. Every now and then, I pick one of them, and I re-read them. It`s like traveling back in time and re-living certain moments. I hope there will come a time when younger generations will rediscover the beautiful habit of writing real letters, provided post offices will still exist. Gosh, I hope they will.

We are getting to the point now that letters are becoming completely obsolete. Very sad to be honest. 600 letters is crazy!!!!!!! Wow! The love is real when you actually take the time to write a letter and send it, you wouldn't go to that much hassle to do that for someone you don't particularly like. But text messages are different, no effort.... Takes like 5 seconds to type and receive a text.

@@SephPlays Texting take 5 seconds... Um, not for me it doesn't. I am a legit OCD grammar nerd. I would LOVE to know how people are able to send 6 texts in the same amount of time it takes me to type out one. Although I suspect it would mean for me to not care so much about my grammar. Being grammatically correct was ingrained in me from the time I was first taught to write my name. So yeah. That's gonna stick. On writing proper letters: I actually had to when I was younger. I had to write out thank you letters to family members who sent me birthday and Christmas and Easter gifts. I also wrote proper letters to a childhood friend of mine who moved 1,120 miles away. We wrote back and forth for a while but eventually lost touch. But yes. I did grow up writing letters. Oh! Here in America when I was in grade school we had a Pen Pal program. We could write to any student in our own age group in any school in the U.S. or in the U.S. Territories. Or maybe it was anywhere in the world. I can't remember now actually. Anyway... Yes. When I was growing up letter writing was encouraged and still something of a necessity (when calling long distance was expensive and before everyone had a computer and the internet and AOL messenger).

You carry on caring about your grammar, Sammy. I agree that it is very important and it's just a pity that more people don't think so and that it doesn't seem to be taught in the same way that it used to be (I'm worried about how good my grammar is now 😕).

On Seph's most recent Elvis reaction I typed out some info on the guitar Elvis had in the movie scene and for the life of me I could not remember how to spell Cincinnati. I had to spell check myself 😂 I used to have this thick volume- GREAT book, by the way- called The Writer's Grammar Guide By The New York Public Library. (Or something like that any way). I LOVED that book. I used to pour over its pages like it was a treasured lost artifact or something. So yes. I understand completely on worrying over if your own grammar is no longer as good as it used to be. If you are interested there is this blog I used to follow called The Grammar Girl. I don't know if she runs it any more but I used to read all her Grammar blogs/ posts.

A classic - in 1970 he remade this as a favour to the piano player. Was leaving the studio after a long day recording and the piano player asked him if he could do it again as he himself was the same piano player on this recording and felt he didn't do it as good as he could have. When you get round to it you might not like it as much, so just bear in mind he was exausted at that version. Also sang it a lot in concert in 76 and some versions are just brilliant.

Seph, you didn't slip up. Actually, you picked up on something that I, as a huge Elvis fan with many years, had not picked up before, and that is he does sound like he would eventually go on to sound from late '68 to the new stage into the 1970's. Very very good analysis. In fact, now that you mentioned, i actually think this can be pointed out as the turning point of his voice, a new direction one which he begins to leave his early voice from the '50's and early to mid 60's, into the late 60's and the final years in the '70's. Thanks for your review. And it is a fantastic song, and i hope you see the actual live rendition of this song from Elvis, his breathing on this song is amazing, even more so than when you heard him continue to string along the notes around the middle of this song.

So this is from 1966 . Its beautifully sung but I must say His version from the album love letters from elvis of this son is much more superior only because his voice is deeper and more mature . Also the musicians were who he picked so instrumentals were better . Give this a look at when you get to the 70s . Now 2 songs you must do from 68 69 are Let's forget about the stars ... That's Floyd Cramer on the piano. Read the song's Wikipedia article for the reference. Some of those old songs were unbeatable. The original by Dick Haymes was pretty good, but I don't know what it would have been on the charts because I don't think they had charts back then. I know it was played a lot on the radio.
