Not only is it his greatest performance of his career, it may just be the greatest message performance by any performer ever! He poured every inch of soul he had into that performance. At the end he was so out of breath from the raw emotion that he expressed crying out for peace, love, equality, and brotherhood. I get chills every time I hear this song. It's just untouchable.✌️

Don’t get this twisted! This was a tribute to RFK who was assassinated also after MLK with words from speeches that were written by both. Elvis was very close friends with the Kennedys especially Robert was about to be the next President!

Elvis recorded this during the filming in June of 1968, of what would later be known as the “68 Comeback Special”. Dr King was killed earlier that year, and RLK a couple weeks prior to the filming. Elvis was really upset with Dr Kings death. Elvis would often recite Dr Kings speeches to his friends. The director of the comeback special asked the writers to talk to Elvis about what was on his mind, and write a song to relay his feelings. This is the result. Elvis meant every word of that song. After that, he said that he wouldn’t record a song he didn’t believe in. The only time Elvis sang this song live was during the making of this special.

If I Can Dream was written by W. Earl Brown as a request by Elvis in response to the assassinations of MLK and Robert Kennedy, in 1968. Producer Steve Binder says that Elvis passed out after the 5th take because of the emotion he put into the song. The song was released as a single - b/w Edge of Reality - peaking at #12 on Billboard. The Comeback Special was filmed between June 24-30, 1968 and released in NBC-TV on December 4, 1968

This is elvis's favorite song because he really did believe in those words and his manager said don't do message songs it will ruin your career but Elvis kicked out his manager and everyone and recorded this song and in the ghetto and Kentucky rain and suspicious minds and said from now on I will only do songs that mean something to me and he did

That suit! He looks like a country preacher in a frock coat! Just like a courtly old time southern gentleman. Look at the way the sleeve is cut to the exact measurement of his arm. And it's cut to fit every measurement of his body. I've never seen anything like it. And then add to that his physique, gorgeous head of hair, pale blue eyes with droopy thick lashes. Cut it out! He reminds me of the statue of David by Michaelangelo right?

I had seen a video about the clothes Elvis wore in the 68 Comeback Special and there is a meaning behind the red scarf around Elvis's neck. A red scarf was chosen because of all the blood that was shed and for all the soldiers during the Vietnam War. Elvis loved the idea that it represented that. Also when Elvis recorded this song, the recording studio was dark,no light at all. When Elvis was done singing this song, they couldn't find him until the lights came back on and he was laying on the floor in the corner and crying. That was the only take of that song. He done it perfectly.

The thing about elvis presley was his soul depth and diversity. He's a true chameleon. The 1954 elvis presley was a young dynamite punk rocker, screaming "shake rattle and roll" like a cat on fire His initial sound at sun studio in Memphis, was LITERALLY the progressive fusion of white country and bluegrass with black blues. Those critically acclaimed recordings are REVELATORY and innovative. Then, he explodes onto the national scene with tons of critically acclaimed recordings. Then, he gets out of the army and branched out into multiple genres of music, with even more critical acclaim. Then comes the raw soul of his late 60's recordings. Then the Nashville sessions of the early 70's. The man was a unique incomparable and iconic artist, the likes of which may never be seen again.

When Elvis got the news of his friend dr. King being assassinated he was filming a movie and they had to shut down production for a day because Elvis just went in the back and curled up into a ball and cried 4 hours. The guy really gave a shit. Born into poverty and never forgot it. He helped a lot of people along the way for sure. But yeah you can definitely hear the pain and Agony in his voice and if you think about how difficult it is to sing and perform when you are choked with emotion, I believe that's what makes the a brilliant performance because he manages to walk that tightrope.

Elvis had this song written for him to perform as part of a 1968 Christmas TV special. It was to honor the life and memories of MLK, killed earlier that year. Elvis was born and raised in poor neighborhoods where most of the residents were Black. While in high school he sang gospel at a nearby Black Baptist church. James Brown considered Elvis to be a close friend.

You have just witnessed a devastated Elvis singing out his soul to honor his assassinated friends, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Senator Bobby Kennedy who was also a fierce fighter for human rights and equality. Watch the video "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" and that will give you an good idea of how Elvis fought his heart out for the innocent downtrodden.. He grew up dirt poor and hung out with African Americans who loved him as much as he loved them. He was a force for good, and it hurts to see him called a racist. He was a courageous fighter all of this life. I love that man.
