His heart and soul went into every word he sang here. I said before, this was more than a song, he was delivering a much-needed message to the world, one we still need today. One of the greatest performances ever. He's at his best here and for Elvis, that's saying something.

a much needed message to the world ,indeed - 55 years ago this year - 55 means loud and clear doesn't it? i mean in millitary speak - Elvis speaking loud and clear 55 years later - the answer's gotta come- out there in the dark there's a flickering candle - destined to become ablaze

He had this written for him. It's based on Dr Martin Luther King Jr's I have a dream speech. He was on a movie set when he learned of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination. He was devastated. Then two months later Senator Robert Kennedy was also slain. They were two of the greatest allies in the Civil Rights Movement. This aired in December of 1968. You can see him almost stumble because he's putting everything into this song. It is said that after this performance he quickly exited the stage and went and sobbed in his dressing room.

Such a powerful performance and the most amazing song. I honestly don't know how he got through that song on camera. Elvis had such amazing strength in his heart when he sang. No matter the song no matter where he was performing. I wish my Dad was still alive so I could share all of this renewed focus on Elvis again. He would have loved it. 💗💓💖

Well close it was for a movie that never went into production. They had no artist picked but they knew Elvis was getting ready to cut his ICONIC come back special. Elvis was a HUGE SUPPORTER of Dr King and when he heard the song, Jerry said tears just fell and he looked at the Production Manager and said "I want this to close the TV spot" history was made.

i did not know that - thankyou - that is fascinating - all i knew was he left it all on the stage - so epic with a capital E - 55 years later - is this the theme for America's comeback? Rebirth of a nation? i want his dream to come true whoaaah right now - i want his dream to be my dream - it's like a prayer with Epic Emotion that writes on the heart surely the answer is coming right now

ps i am directing my comments as replies to your comments because i don't want to spoil the 153 number of comments - Elvis was a gospel singer - 153 is the sum of 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13+14+15+16+17 which is a great mental arithmetic exercise - easier than you would think - where in the bible does 153 appear and what does it mean?

This was a tribute to Martin 🎉Luther King Jr who had been assassinated a few months earlier and also Bobby Kennedy. I feel Elvis felt every word of this song. I agree with you , the only word to describe it is “Incredible”.

I read a Vanity Fair article and the director said Elvis was very upset about both assasinations and had talked about them. He told the song writer to write the best song he had ever written based on his conversations with Elvis. That’s why the song seems so personal for Elvis. Those words were his actual feelings

The message of this song is just as relevant today as the day Elvis sang it. What a powerful performance. You could just see the emotion in his face and hear it in his voice. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

even more relevant i reckon - louder and clearer with each passing day - 55 years ago this year this song was recorded - 55 means loud and clear in millitary speak - he really does reach inside and melt down this cold heart of stone with that one - it is freakin blistering

I saw Elvis in concert the year of his death. I have never heard a voice before nor after that even comes close to his talent. I witnessed a miracle.

My parents listened to Elvis and I hated it but I only heard the rock songs from the movies. This was a PHENOMENAL performance. Wow. I’m stunned. He was incredible

Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend I became friends with for years after Elvis died n he told me many great stories about Elvis I even kept a journal on the stories that he told me. One was after singing this song n walking back stage he started to cry. N when they showed him the all white suit they wanted him to wear he left n went to a men's store n bought a red scarf to wear around his neck, he said that it represented the blood that was shed

Elvis is one of the best singers that has ever lived. He was also a fabulous entertainer. There is a reason he is called "The King". He had a great voice & could sing anything whether it was ballads, gospel or rock. This song "If I Can Dream" was a tribute to Martin Luther King after his assassination.

Elvises manager wanted him to sing a christmas song for his final song of the night, Elvis told him F U Im singing If I can dream for my friend Martin. His voice was raspy cuz he was on the border line of crying trying to hold back. His band members said after this performance he went back stage and fell on the floor in the fetal position and cryed for a half hour. He poured everytging he had into this and it drained him dry. R.I.P Elvis. God Bless King. No Autotune, No Computers back then Just Raw God given Talent. No Words !

I saw him 1974 1975, I was lucky and got one of his scarfs he wore around his neck during the performance. I had tickets for the August 20, 1977 show that I paid a whopping $14.00 each. He passed August 16, 1977.

I had the great fortune of seeing Elvis when I was 6 in 1973. My mom took me. I’ve never forgotten it. The music, the women screaming (mom included 😂). I remember clearly the day he died. My mother bawled so hard. There will never be another King imo. I still love him to this day and his messages are needed as much today as ever. A trailblazer in so many ways.

this was performed a few weeks after MLK was assassinated, this was Elvis's dream that we could all one day live in peace and love one another. Imagine what it was like back in 1968, sadly this song is still relevant to our times now.. we still need peace and understanding.

In my opinion the best and most powerful performance by Elvis ever..He put everything he had into this song because he had belief in the words of what he was singing..His manger and the sponsors of the show didn't want him to do this song but he did it anyway..Tribute and remembrance of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy who were assassinated earlier in the year..Elvis was also a huge believer and supporter of the civil rights movement and very much admired MLK and Bobby Kennedy..They say after he performed this song he went back stage and cried..No one could ever perform this song as well as he did..He was and still is the King..

I saw Elvis in Chicago in May 1976 at the old Chicago Stadium. This was about 15 months before he died and so means all the more to me. I was sitting in the second balcony with my boyfriend, Elvis was a little white dot on the stage that felt miles away and yet I was transported to dreamland watching and listening. I remember putting my chin in my hands and releasing a huge sigh and my boyfriend stated he wished I felt like that about him and I told him 'If you were Elvis, I would!' Gee, wonder why we broke up. Then just a few months later I was sitting in my car waiting for the light to turn green and the most horrible news came across the radio: Elvis had died. That shook me to my bones and I remember the horrible feeling of loss to his family, his community and to his very loving fans. One of my favorite songs by Elvis is 'Ghetto'. Shall look to see if you have reviewed it.

I was 17 when this Comeback Special was on. It was awesome and exciting that night. I went to my brother's house so that my sister in law and I could watch it and not be bothered. It was really an unforgettable moment in time.

I'm in Memphis and saw him here in 1976. After the many other concerts I've been to in my life, seeing our hometown boy remains the most memorable of my life. Of course, been through Graceland several times and cried at the gates with hundreds of others each Christmas.

This song was written special for Elvis and was not to be performed in this special. Due to the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Presidential candidate, Robert Kennedy, Elvis was so touched by these events that he wanted to do something. This is my favorite Elvis song. I will go to my grave being a fan and carry nothing but admiration for the kind, generous man he was and for being the greatest entertainer of all time. Thanks for reacting to this video.

His backup singers, musicians and everyone in the control room said this is the one and only time they ever seen Elvis cry while singing on stage. After the performance was over they all went backstage and just hugged each other and cried. Elvis then went and locked himself on the bus alone for over an hour and got on his knees and prayed and cried.

I saw him perform live in 1970 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was absolutely an honor to see an icon that changed music and culture. He kicked in the door for so many that followed him. He was more than just an entertainer, he was a poor boy from Mississippi that became the biggest star in the world. Elvis' life was a story Hollywood couldn't have written.

The back story of this is at the end of his 1968 Special. When Elvis came back from his Army duty, he wasn't sure if people would still attend his concerts like before so he did this Special and to close it, he went alone on stage to sing this song. Now his agent, Colonel Parker, didn't want him to sing this song but Elvis insisted. He was full of emotion after the assassination of Martin Luther King and of course, Bobby Kennedy and he was so distraught that he sang this song. There are quite a few lines from Martin's 'I Have A Dream' speech as well. When he finished and the curtains closed, he fell to the ground and cried for a very long time. He has only sang it a very few times since then (of course, before his death) but that song was to heartbreaking for him. There's a documentary that shows how Elvis had no racism in his heart whatsoever and felt that he had to pay his respect to MLK. This was from the heart and soul. Thanks for the reaction as always. Elves loved and respected Martin Luther king Jr. He was killed just a couple of months before Elvis sang this sing. Some one knew how he felt and he Wrote this song for him Absolutely beautiful. I have loved Elvis for 65 years I Especially love his Gospels.

This was aired in December of 68. Elvis's manager Tom Parker wanted the last song to be a cheesy Christmas song but Elvis stood up to him (one of the few times) and insisted it be If I Can Dream. He was right of course. I saw Elvis July 1976 in Rochester N.Y. at the War Memorial Coliseum. We had floor seats so I was able to get up to the stage and pretty close to him and his Blue Blue eyes. It was surreal...there he was Elvis Presley. I'll never forget it.

Whenever someone says Elvis wasn't talented, or call him overrated I show them this performance. Not only is his voice and singing ability fantastic and unique, but you can tell he pours every piece of his soul into this performance. The songs obvious message of racial equality and civil rights for disenfranchised African Americans was something Elvis firmly believed in and he chose to end his 1968 comeback special with this controversial song instead of taking the easy option of doing a Christmas musical performance which was originally pushed on him by his management.

There was only one Elvis, never to matched again. Every song he sang HE FELT! He got a bad rap from a lot of people but, they didn't know him like others did and they didn't want to know him. I've watch the Elvis documentaries and he did so much for so many without any fanfare. Truly a legend that will never be forgotten. Love your reactions, have a great day.

BRO, Previously you asked for more ELVIS Gospel songs. There's a couple live versions of "How Great Thou Art", one in 1992; also 1977, not many weeks before he left us. Both are fantastic. In every concert there was sure to be a Gospel song, either by him or his backing singers; "Sweet Sweet Spirit" comes to mind. THANK YOU again, for your heartfelt reactions!

@@christhornycroft3686 Those all are tremendous Gospel songs! I am a vocalist and have an ELVIS songbook, songs that were arranged by him. "He Knows Just What I Need" is one of my favorites. "Milky White Way", another. There is a ELVIS rehearsal video of "O Happy Day" which is an impromptu song that shows his mastery of music. A song I sung for my Mother's Funeral was "Stand By Me", arranged by ELVIS.

I saw Elvis live in Macon, Georgia 1975 and in Savannah, Georgia February 1977 few months before he passed away. I also went to Graceland in 1997. All was absolutely mind blowing,

Oh by the way, this song was written for ELVIS to sing after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr.! He was a great friend of his and it broke his heart that he was killed in Memphis!

One of the best performances by any artist ever! I’m 37, but my mom saw him in Macon, Georgia USA in 1972. She’s says it was “incredible!!

Amazing reaction to an amazing performance! Elvis sang this with no studio audience present and never performed it in a concert. My wife and I saw him live in Philadelphia...I swear everyone there stood for the entire concert...It was an incredible experience.

If you can't understand how much passion is in this performance... how amazing this man's voice and soul went into everything... The King. I wish I had been there but no.. I was 1 yrr old.. lol

Elvis the singer was impeccable but Elvis the man, Humanitarian,was bloody Amazing !He did so much for so many ,there are hundreds of stories of his kindness and generosity that would blow your mind !😍

One of the most impressive was when he and Jerry Schilling flew commercial from LA to Washington for Elvis' meeting with Nixon in 1970. Elvis cashed a check for $500 in LA so they'd have money for the trip, but on the plane he met a soldier on his way home from Vietnam and gave the five hundred bucks - every cent he had on him - to the returning serviceman. Truly a generous soul.
