@Grandpa Reacts Thank you so much for this. Truly, this was very thoughtful of you. I'm so glad you chose to end it this way, on a high note- so to speak. So to answer your question: In the 1950's, Elvis's leg- shaking, hip- swiveling moves were seen as vulgar and obnoxious by a lot of the older generation. Rock 'n' Roll was seen as vulgar and some thought it to be the "Devil's Music". I know you reacted to Elvis And The Black Community so you saw some of the hate Elvis caught. Just for gyrating his legs and swiveling his hips. As Elvis said in an interview, "You can't just stand there like a statue. You gotta give the people a show." His fans loved the shows he put on for them. But in the beginning, many hated him for it. There were some cities who wouldn't even let Elvis perform in their cities. (Not a lot of them, but there were a couple.) And then there was the incident that Elvis was told that if he even moved a finger he was going to be arrested. Elvis, in response during the show he put on, raised his hand and stuck out his pinkie finger and waved it. The crowd went nuts. From just Elvis moving his pinkie finger, the girls went nuts. That little scene in the movie did actually happen. Just not with the song "Trouble". "Trouble" was from his 1958 movie "King Creole". The concert depicted was at Russwood Park which took place in 1956. It was also a benefit concert. So people who think "cancel culture" is new, it isn't. In Hollywood, there was the Blacklist. The House Of Un- American Communist Activities who tried to blacklist or "cancel" actors, comedians, directors, screenwriters, musicians, etc for "suspected" membership of the Communist Party USA. Elvis came to Hollywood at the tail end of that whole thing, actually. In fact, Nedrick Young, the screenwriter for "Jailhouse Rock" was a "blacklisted" actor & screenwriter. Elvis did smoke. Priscilla talks about it. She gave him a beautiful cigarette box carved like monkeys for his jungle room. When asked if he smoked, she said, “everyone smoked”.
