Elvis Presley - Scene from "Stay Away, Joe" (MGM 1968)

Elvis gives one of the performances of his life as Joe Lightcloud in "Stay Away, Joe". He's cool, sexy, funny, natural and full of energy. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. It's pretty obvious what's going on between Joan Blondell and Elvis. Only the second time that Elvis' character gets sexually involved with an obvously elder women (after "Wild in the Country", 1961). Well, it could have been one heckuva movie - if they only had had a script... :-/

I know Elvis enjoyed making this movie. Many of the scenes had him doing things he liked to do in real life. Like riding a motor cycle and just fooling around. And he looked Absolutely Gorgeous with that tan.

You said it, Don. 'on-location shoot' and not only that, night-time exterior filming which you never saw in an Elvis movie. One reviewer said, "Each frame of the movie has a lust for life." Elvis said, "That was the most fun I had making a movie."

The song "Stay Away" was featured in the movie; it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on March 16th, eight days after the movie's premier. Eventually the record peaked at #67 and spent 5 weeks on the Top 100... The record's A-side, "U.S' Male", reached #26 on the Top 100 and stayed on that chart for 9 weeks... Joan Blondell may have been the older woman but she still looked sexy & being in an Elvis film was quite cool for her. Elvis made movies with many older & not so older classy women. Hope Lange, Barbara Stanwyck, Lizabeth Scott, Angela Lansbury, Dolores del Rio, Carolyn Jones & Judy Tyler.
