Elvis gave the band and orchestra time to prepare for "The Wonder Of You" folling "Runaway." Hey, we're into 1970 now and you still haven't done "Swing Down Sweet Chariot" from the movie "The Trouble With Girls." The movie came out in 1969, but the recording was made in 1968.

i also have to comment on his guy that picks the songs for Seph. A lot of the januari 69 recordings also have not been reacted to yet. Runaway was on on album from 1970, and despite the album states recorded february 1970. Runaway was recorded august 1969.So this one is a bit early reacted to.

I don't think he's done Let Us Pray or Rubberneckin either, but maybe I missed (although don't know how that could have happened). They were both part of Change of Habit and he did the other movie songs (missed the best ones).😊

@@HeavenlyPresley-Tonya Please chill, friend. ♥ Seph does not pick the songs. He has told the person who does to keep them in year order but mix them up. All I'm doing is commenting on the missed ones. No one is abusing Seph. Posts are here to comment. Seph has no idea what songs might be missing from the playlist. He's never heard them before. I, for one, love Seph and what he's doing. It's not hurting his feelings to learn that a song or two has been missed so he can tell his helper or not, as he pleases.

Also Elvis Extra Article here: Known for a powerful stage presence in total command of every room he has ever worked. But backstage at the International Hotel on July 31, 1969, Elvis Presley was packing back and forth like a panther. In a few minutes, he would march out into what was then the largest showroom in Las Vegas, holding 2.000 people. Dressed in a chic black tunic and bell bottoms that matched his long but neatly combed black-tinted hair. Elvis Presley stepped onstage last week at the International Hotel in Las Vegas and launched into the driving beat of 'Blue Suede Shoes'. The audience of 2,000, most of them over 30, roared and squealed in nostalgic appreciation. In spite of his updated look, Elvis hadn't changed at all in the nearly nine years since his last personal appearance. Shaking, gyrating and quivering, he again proved himself worthy of his nickname, The Pelvis. Through nervousness caused him to sing 'Love my, me tender' for 'Love Me Tender', the pasty-faced enchanter quickly settled down to work his oleaginous charms, backed by a 30-piece orchestra, a five-man combo and a chorus of seven. Oozing the sullen sexuality that threw the America into a state of shock in the 50's, he groaned and swiveled through a medley of 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'All Shook Up' and 'Hound Dog'. It was hard to believe he was 34 and no longer 19 years old. In fact, there are several unbelievable things about Elvis, but the most incredible is his staying power in a world where meteoric careers fade like shooting stars, Presley shot to the top in 1956 with 'Heartbreak Hotel' and has stayed in the uppermost tax bracket ever since. Forty-seven of his singles have sold more than a million copies. He has made 32 movies, currently turning them out at a rate of four year and raking in a cool million plus half the profits for each. Presley's income is estimated at $5 million a year and he spends it freely. Among his purchases are an antebellum mansion called Graceland near Memphis (the house is painted luminous blue and gold and glows in the dark), and a succession of cars including a gold Cadillac. No ones knows how much the boy from Memphis is being paid for his four week Las Vegas stand but, according to Presley associate, 'Coming in on the heels of Barbra Streisand, you know that it's over a million'. When, during a news conference after the opening, a British entrepreneur offered Elvis a million pounds sterling for one appearance in London, it was Parker who answered: 'Bring me a deposit tomorrow'. Presley doesn't seem to mind letting Parker run interference, for he likes privacy and spends his free time holed up at one of his houses with his wife, his infant daughter and a group of buddy-bodyguards sometimes called the 'Memphis Mafia'. Elvis arrived in Las Vegas a week before the show and immediately began rehearsing five hours a day-losing 10 pounds in the process. 'He's really working on this one', said a stagehand. 'He doesn't know if he can still cut it.' Presley magic was in his loyal fans, mostly women who lined his corridor suite. Only celebrities and big spenders were there opening night to hear Presley sing a lot of oldies and one new song, with a new message aimed at the black rock market. 'In The Ghetto' chronicles the evils of poverty in a Chicago slum and could signal the birth of a social conscience for Presley. Another recent record release, 'If I Can Dream', proclaims brotherhood according to the gospel of Martin Luther King, but did not appear on the Vegas program. When asked if these songs marked a new direction he might take, Elvis answered, 'I go by the material. When I got 'In The Ghetto', I couldn't turn it down. It was too big'. It's selling big, too-more than a million to date. Presley's plans include other personal appearances, through no dates have been specified, and more movie roles. 'I'm going after more serious material', he said. 'I'm tired of playing a guy who gets into a fight, then starts singing to the guy he's just beat up'. And of course, the granddaddy of rock will continue trying to catch up with the times, sensing that he can't trade on the power of nostalgia forever. 'There are a lot of new records out now that have the same sound I started. But they're better', he admitted, 'I mean, you can't compare a song like 'Yesterday' with 'Hound Dog', can you?' As Elvis came off the stage, he had tears in his eyes and was soaked in sweat, but this was the sweat of a job well done. - Joe Esposito. Note: I had to include this in a separate comment. Happy reading! P.S. Graceland was built in 1939 by the Moore family. Long after the Antebellum period in the American South. Elvis bought Graceland from Ruth Toof (maiden name Moore) in 1957 for a little over 100K in US dollars and included in the bill of sale his old home on Audubon Drive. Interestingly, according to the official Graceland website, Elvis also signed a 25 year mortgage agreement during the purchase of Graceland.

I LOVE the natural raspiness & little cracks his voice emitted, especially prominent in this song, & in much of '69 -- almost to the point as if he had a little cold. He sounded a bit different in '69 than in '70 -- maybe he did have a bit of a cold? Del Shannon WAS good -- but Elvis was the ultimate in this song -- very fitting for his voice type. The backups are PHENOMENAL!

This was a cover, but when you put the Elvis on it it becomes something different. Elvis made any song his own. He was executive producer of his music and often the quartet members use to say when he changed arrangements he would often sit at the piano and play the cord changes for each singer. Elvis played totally by ear. If you notice in his final performance before his death, "Unchained Melody". He is accompanying himself on the piano. He has been underated as a arranger. Watch his rehearsal. Video from 1970, " Elvis Presley and the Sweet Inspiration/words". Also "Twenty Days and Twenty Nights Rehearsal". 197O. You are missing out not doing his rehearsal vids, that show his personality. Thanks. " Stranger in the Crowd" Rehearsal 1970.

I had an argument with someone on another channel who claimed that Elvis couldn't possibly be an arranger because he couldn't read music and was not trained to arrange music. He couldn't grasp that Elvis could do it all by ear. When you can tell each instrument when to come in, what notes to play, how loud, how quiet, and each singer the same until the music sounds just the way you want it to, you are arranging music, right?

I looked it up Seph, Stevie Wonder got his start in 1961 at the age of 11. Elvis knew Michael Jackson as well, there is a an audio clip of him introducing the Jackson 5 at one of his Vegas Concerts. Elvis also took his Daughter Lisa to one of the Jackson 5 concerts and took her backstage to meet Michael in 1975 when she was 7. Lisa and Michael reconected later when she was older and they eventually got Married. ❤

There's only so much music you can listen to in a day. MJ was a great entertainer. Dimash has a voice that is unbelievable in its technical ability and range, although he uses autotune, so . . . . But Elvis is Elvis. The only singer that comes close to his emotional range and tone is Patsy Cline. MJ, TJ, and PC had no autotune. In fact, if they did use it, they would not have sounded the same, no ascending or descending into the notes, just zip and there you are. It sounds like a robot singing. One reason the old singers sound so good is because they didn't have it. I have yet to hear any singer who brought out the sheer emotion of Elvis (except - almost - Patsy). I just had a thought that maybe that is why most of his detractors are males who are nervous about emotion. Hmmm. I wonder.

Morning Seph 🌻🌞🙋 Okay so I had to make an executive decision here. I will be focusing mostly on song info & Elvis info pertaining to the dates & number of times he performed this song live. For anyone interested in reading more in- depth about Del Shannon (whose real name was Charles Westover) I will leave a link to his Wiki bio page. I will also be leaving a link to the live comparison series featuring this song as done by Elvis over on Leon's channel at the end (he really does have quite the collection of Elvis song content which I appreciate). Righty- O, then! Song info first! Runaway" is a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song made famous by Del Shannon in 1961. It was written by Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook, and became a major international hit. It topped the Billboard charts for four consecutive weeks, and Billboard ranked it as the No. 5 song for 1961. It was No. 472 on the 2010 version of Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and No. 466 on the 2004 version. Singer-guitarist Charles Westover and keyboard player Max Crook performed together as members of "Charlie Johnson and the Big Little Show Band" in Battle Creek, Michigan, before their group won a recording contract in 1960. Westover took the new stage name "Del Shannon", and Crook, who had invented his own clavioline-based electric keyboard called a Musitron, became "Maximilian". After their first recording session for Big Top Records in New York City had ended in failure, their manager Ollie McLaughlin persuaded them to rewrite and re-record an earlier song they had written, "Little Runaway", to highlight Crook's unusual instrumental sound. On January 21, 1961, they recorded "Runaway" at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, with Harry Balk as producer, Fred Weinberg as audio engineer and also session musicians on several sections: session musician Al Caiola on guitar, Moe Wechsler on piano, and Crook playing the central Musitron break. Other musicians on the record included Al Casamenti and Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Joe Marshall on drums. Bill Ramall, who was the arranger for the session, also played baritone sax. After recording in A minor, producer Balk sped up the recording to pitch just below a B-flat minor. "Runaway" was released in February 1961 and was immediately successful. On April 10 of that year, Shannon appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, helping to catapult it to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for four weeks. Two months later, it reached number one on the UK's Record Retailer chart, spending three weeks in that position. On Billboard's Hot R&B Sides, "Runaway" peaked at number three. The song was ranked No. 5 on Billboard's end of year "Hot 100 for 1961 - Top Sides of the Year" and No. 9 on Cash Box's "Top 100 Chart Hits of 1961". Now then, Elvis actually performed "Runaway" live in 1969 Las Vegas at The International Hotel a total number of 18 times. He did not include this song in his set at his very first live show there on July 31, 1969 (Opening Show; Elvis only gave one concert/ show on his opening date to perform the very first time in Las Vegas's largest Showroom at the time 2,000 seats which was a 1,000 more seats than at Frank Sinatra's former residency in The Copa Room at The Sands Hotel.) So the first time Elvis performed "Runaway" was during his 12th live performance at The International on August 6, 1969 during the Dinner Show (also sometimes called the Opening Show or OS abbreviated). Full list of dates & shows listed below: Version 1: 08/06/ 1969 Dinner Show Version 2: 08/07/ 1969 Dinner Show Version 3: 08/08/1969 Midnight Show Version 4: 08/12/1969 Dinner Show Version 5: 08/14/1969 Dinner Show Version 6: 08/15/1969 Midnight Show Version 7: 08/16/1969 Midnight Show Version 8: 08/21/1969 Midnight Show Version 9: 08/22/1969 Dinner Show Version 10: 08/22/1969 Midnight Show Version 11: 08/23/1969 Dinner Show Version 12: 08/23/1969 Midnight Show Version 13: 08/24/1969 Dinner Show Version 14: 08/24/1969 Midnight Show Version 15: 08/25/1969 Dinner Show Version 16: 08/25/1969 Midnight Show Version 17: 08/26/1969 Dinner Show Version 18: 08/26/1969 Midnight Show Additional Info: Las Vegas, July 31, 1969- August 28, 1969 (57 shows in total) Musicians (excluding Elvis since he was technically The Front Man of what would be later be called The TCB Band)/ Original Band Members: Lead Guitar: James Burton Rhythm Guitar: John Wilkinson Bass: Jerry Scheff Piano: Larry Muhoberac Drums: Ronnie Tutt Acoustic Guitar: Charlie Hodge Back Up Vocals Groups: The Sweet Inspirations (ladies) The Imperials (gents) Orchestra: Bobby Morris & The Bobby Morris Orchestra Comedian: Sammy Shore Notes: Glen D. I love that you dance to good musical jams Seph. You’ve helped a new Elvis fan at 60 yrs get to know his musical archive, thanks from Washington State US for giving us the treat of you and the Elvis. Oh that *voice*!

Great stuff. This is just a taster of what awaits you in regards to the live stuff Seph - all depending on how deep you want to dive into that stuff. A dive well worth taking - rest assured! Although Elvis’ first show on his return to live performing was on 31 July 1969, this song was not performed during that show and the earliest known rendition is from his dinner show of 6 August. The version released on 1970's "On Stage" album which chronicled Elvis' in February 1970, was the first time we heard "Runaway" performed by Elvis. Ironically, it was actually one of two songs on that album recorded at his August 1969 Las Vegas engagement. In the case of this song it was recorded during the dinner show of 25 August 1969. Before release it underwent a few adjustments beginning on 26 September 1969 at RCA's Studio A in Nashville where James Burton re-recorded his guitar solo, which was officially titled "guitar solo repair". At the same studio on 31 March 1970, additional vocal overdubs were recorded, which was repeated on 1 April.

Steph,Great review. Just as a side note regarding this album- it is the only one ever released without the name of the artist on the cover. Only the King could do this!

I thought you were going to burst into song way before the end. Great job of controlling yourself! 🤣 I think you and your little chipmunk voice reached BANGER status. What a fun reaction!!

brilliant - he said do the wonder of you. Oh and Stevie Wonder was around from 1960 or so - was actually known as little stevie wonder as was a child singer, much like the jackson five and the osmonds.

Del Shannon's biggest hit, it's such a great song & I love the way Elvis changes it up, but I can't split them either Seph, equal double bangers all round! Nice cover too Seph, just needs a little work? 😁

I know it's Del Shannon's old song but it's reminiescent of Kentucky Rain in the story line.

I prefer the Del Shannon studio version which was a huge hit across the world back in 1961.. Saying that this driving live version from Elvis has his inimitable charismatic stamp on it and is more than passable.

Seph, Tonya is correct. It would be better to pin the statement at the top of the comments. Everyone is more likely to see it there and quit complaining. People never seem to read the blurb at the top. I can be guilty of that too. Much love. You're doing a wonderful job and my favorite reactor.❤

Good cover tho I prefer Dels version fyi this fantastic song was selling 80,000 copies a day for a few weeks at first. The "musitron" early version of a synthesizer was built especially for this song. This songs is 60 plus yrs old dug it much back in the day, still do
