Oh yeah that was a MasterClass in musicianship. Elvis was the arranger. Joe Gershio Orchestra is in the mix but Joe did whatever Elvis directed him to do. Elvis was extremely involved in every key and every note of the orchestra. He could feel it. He would know if something is off and he would adjust on the fly. On this particular song, the Orchestra is perfect and that’s who Elvis was signaling to at the end when he clinched his fists. He was actually thanking the band.

Elvis did what he felt and taught himself to do it superbly. His genuine appreciation of other musicians encouraged them also to make wonderful music. It still surprises me to hear someone like you appreciate his talent after the vicious criticism and ridicule he got when he was alive.

Seeing this man live in concert, must have been close to a religious experience. An incredible singer, a «charisma monster» that transcends time and bridges generation gaps, vastly underrated. No need for 100 dancers, gimmicks or 200 trucks with extra effects, just one man and his mind-blowing talent. His back-up singer,, Kathy Westmoreland, classically trained, said it best, « his voice just responded, he hit notes that he wasn’t supposed to hit. He reduced us (the back-up singers),to tears, many, many times with that voice». World-famous opera singers, like Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, loved Elvis, the latter commenting, «his voice, was the one voice I wish I had». Elvis, missed by millions to this day.

elvis always remained just a boy from tupelo in his heart he never forget where he came from, the people who helped him along the way & his fans that made it all possible he often said he felt like the most blessed person on the planet and giving back was his way of paying for that privilege elvis was absolutely involved with every lil single thing that was played on that stage & how it was played the same goes for his studio work he was never credited as a producer but if you speak to anyone who ever worked with him they will tell you he should've been & was one of the best to do it this was his rehearsal show for the world wide aloha from hawaii simulcast..the first entertainer to ever do it all the proceeds went to cancer research & people attending both shows were asked only to pay what they could afford for their tickets elvis even paid for tickets of everybody you see on stage with him & for his own ticket ($1000 for his) lol if you can believe it they ended up raining over $75,000 which was a lot of money in 1973 i was fortunate enough to hear elvis do this live a few months after this performance in seattle honestly me & dad were in tears when he finished absolutely remarkable!! thank you so much for your insightful intelligent commentary regarding elvis please checkout his "its now or never" 1960 elvis take on o sole mio studio version for this one again, thank you so much

Elvis was heavily involved in the music arrangements & arrangements for the backup singers. Nothing happened on stage that Elvis hadn’t arranged, or had approved of. Lighting on stage was very important in Elvis’ case, as he suffered from advanced glaucoma of both eyes, & lights shining directly into his eyes was not only very painful, but also could cause further damage. He was having cortisone steroid injections into his eyes to lower the very high pressure causing the glaucoma. So yes, everything that went on during a performance, was either orchestrated by him, or had been approved by him. I hope you will watch An American Trilogy which is an Amazing performance from this same 1973 Aloha from Hawaii concert, which was the first live concert beamed across the globe via satellite to forty countries. I watched it live in New Zealand.

I’m in the Chicago area in the state of Illinois, USA. I’m 66 years old. I was fortunate enough to actually see Elvis In Concert 5 times. I saw him at the Chicago stadium in June 1972 when I was 14, October 1976 when I was 18, and May 1977 when I was 19. Perhaps my best experience was when I saw him at The Elvis Summer Festival at The Las Vegas Hilton in August 1974, I was 16 at the time and saw 2 of his shows there…. I would have to say seeing him in Las Vegas was a much more intimate experience as the showroom held only 2200 people as opposed to 20,000 at the Chicago Stadium. I wish everyone all the best and we are all blessed that Elvis is a part of our lives in one way or another. Take care everyone.

Indeed, Elvis arranged the live performances. His pianist set out the basic arrangement on some songs, but it's really all Elvis when it comes to arrangements. The arranging continues on stage - subtly he uses his hands to indicate tempo, loudness, and also his legs to call for beats, or his head and side glances for something at that moment. The whole body is used to communicate with the singers and musicians. Everyone on the stage watches him closely for any changes to the basic structure. He does it so effectively that no one in the audience at the time would have realised it was happening. He still has the resources to sing sincerely, look at all in the audience. And the observation about the Appalachian spirit is interesting; bluegrass was natural for him.

An American Trilogy from this Aloha from Hawaii 1973 live concert is Amazing …. & Trying To Get To You from the ‘68 Comeback Special are both great performances for you to react to.Elvis had a fast vibrato that actually was as wide as an opera singer’s, & he also had vocals that ranged from upper base, right through baritone, & up into Tenor, basically covering a vocal range similar to that of many opera singers. The importance of THAT RUNWAY from the STAGE: Producer/director Marty Pasetta told Parker (Elvis' manger) that he wanted to build a runway for Elvis to walk out onto & Parker said no. Pasetta explained that it would be 8 ft. wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or go to the left or to the right if he wanted to because Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis, but Parker still said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Fortunately again, Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the runway. Pasetta told Elvis he wanted him to lose some weight & Elvis lost 25 lbs. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Without that runway the concert would have been somewhat different if Elvis did not have the option to get in close touch w-the audience. This concert was a benefit to raise money for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund. It was expected to raid $25,000 but raised $75,000. Elvis bought his own ticket for $1,000. Thanks for the good reactions you do.

@carolhayar3037Ай бұрын
BACKGROUND INFO: The original French song is entitled "Comme d'habitude" and composed by Jacques Revaux, Gilles Thibaut & Claude François. The English version (My Way), was re-written by Paul Anka for Frank Sinatra. Anka changed the lyrics & slightly altered the melodic structure. The translation of "Comme d'habitude" literally means "as per usual" - about something that happens regularly or that isn't surprising & has nothing to do w-Anka's re-written English version. The video of the original French version w-English subtitles is on the internet. Sinatra's daughter Nancy said that Sinatra did not like the song to the point of hating it. Sinatra said it was "self-serving" but performed it many times anyway. The difference between Sinatra & Elvis is the emotion & passion Elvis put into the song - as he did w-every song he sang. AMAZING VERSION THIS IS!

I'm gonna hit you up with a couple Elvis requests for songs that were recorded during the same time frame as "Hound Dog" and "Blue Suede Shoes". Some think he went from rock 'n' roll in the early days to ballads in the later years. Nope. The versatility was there from the beginning. The studio version of Blue Moon from his first album in 1956 Take My Hand, Precious Lord - Elvis Presley (3:20) from his third album in 1957

Absolutely love these Elvis reactions that you have embarked on - I love the technical analysis that you are giving too - keep them coming. What Now My Love, which was one of the big ballads of the type Elvis loved to sing in the later years. The arrangement to the song is wonderful as it builds verse on verse using the string section, backing vocals and piano to great effect. It is deceiving with the first two verses very similar before the explosion that is the final verse, with that magnificent finale. Listen out too for a wonderful soprano by Kathy Westmoreland throughout. Never recorded in the studio by Elvis, it's most famous pre-Elvis recording is probably the Shirley Bassey version, although it has been covered quite extensively since.

New subscriber here! I'll apologize for the length of this comment up front but hope you'll find it interesting. As you surmised, Elvis was highly involved in the arranging and producing of his music. He always had the final say. He grew up too poor to take any formal music lessons and never did learn to read music. He remembered singing gospel songs at the age of two, and it remained his favorite genre throughout his life. He claimed to know every "colored spiritual" ever written. His influences were varied. As a child, he heard lots of country music, attended a pentacostal church with his parents and also churches with his black playmates. He and his parents enjoyed the all-night traveling gospel shows that were available in his town of Tupelo, Mississippi.. He was also exposed to rhythm and blues played by black men in his neighborhood. As he got older, he listened to all kinds of music including opera. Some of his favorite singers were Roy Hamilton, Mario Lanza, Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, and Fats Domino. If you listen to them, you'll hear them come through in Elvis' voice. When he moved to Memphis at the age of 13, he landed in the heart of the blues and often visited the clubs on Beale Street as a teenager to soak it all in. As he began his career, at the age of 19, all the genres of music that he loved came crashing together to form a unique style. He also attended the monthly gospel quartet concerts where he was known as the pesky kid who was full of questions backstage when the shows were over. At the age of 20, when he was touring and recording for a small studio in Memphis, he asked one of the quartets if they would be his back-up singers if he got a major recording contract. His first band consisted of him on guitar, an electric guitar player, and a stand-up bass player. They were then joined by a drummer. When he got that major recording contract, he requested the gospel quartet. However, the studio only called in one of them. They didn't comprehend the unique ability that Elvis possessed on how to put a sound together. He seemingly had this ability from day one. As time moved on and musicians came and went, his group expanded with him auditioning and hand-picking each one. He needed people who could keep up with his spontaneity. He saw himself as just part of the group. With Elvis it was always we and us -- never I. He respected them and was a perfectionist without being a taskmaster if that makes sense. Well, I've rambled on long enough. Hope I haven't bored you with a bunch of info that you already knew.

Elvis arranged everything in his live shows and if just one person was slightly out, be it a bum note or key etc, he would hear it (when no-ne else could) and look at them to say 'I heard that' and would sometimes start the song over again. You should watch some of the rehearsals from That's The Way It Is to get some idea of this. He could also listen to a song once and play it on the piano immediately afterwards, even though he couldn't actually read music. A savant basically.

Excellent, excellent review. And you've hit the nail with many of your points. Take your point about vulnerability. This is something he shares with Frank Sinatra - I don't like Sinatra's or Presley's 'My Way'. That's not what these two guys are about. Presley when he's tough, he's tongue in cheek. It may be worth listening to an early Presley song 'Harbour Lights' (actually a song that came out of the writer's visit to Southampton docks). This is a young man with a much less powerful voice. Consequently, the vulnerability is even more pronounced. And sweaty. Exactamundo, this is an athlete. And he works for his audience. I like your point about it you feel 'it could go wrong at any one point'. It's interesting because, I think it was Elvis' first drummer, Jo Fontana who is on record as stating that Elvis did not mind if he missed a note or something not quite right happened. I think one very good song to listen to is 'Hurt'. I watch it now and think 'Will he get it'. Your question about Presley and how much he was involved with the arrangement might be answered (interested to hear what you think) by looking at the beginning of 'That's The Way It Is'. Nice one, mate.
