My favorite Elvis song out of so many. Stafford’s version is fun because of what the backup singers do and the organ. That said, Stafford has a limited vocal capability never more pronounced than when he lets the backup group tackle the blurting out of “Suspicion “. Elvis hits it strong and beautifully while Stafford takes a rest and lets the backup singers do it. At least he knew he paled in comparison to Elvis and didn’t try to match him. Smart man. 😆

Good morning Nick, and a very lovely Sunday it is! Suspicion is one of my favorite’s although choosing an Elvis favorite is much like choosing a favorite child…impossible. This one is truly golden beginning with a playful rhythm that belies the emotion he describes. It suggests the spirit of not him, but the woman in question that enjoys toying with a man. As he employs notes oh so feathery that trail off with a vibrato so perfectly controlled that it reaches us as an echo affect. Introducing the reason for his pain Elvis Shifts without warning into opera but for that single word, “suspicion” and your heart quickens. He does not leave you there, as he might in his other songs; rather he changes to falsetto when asking “why torture me” but the word “me” becomes the feather once more that flutters back to the songs bass line. It is a song brilliantly sung, filled with nuance and intrigue. In it you feel her dancing around him and enjoying the pain that she inflicts. If I got carried away on this one Nick, I must apologize! It’s just that this one is so much more than just Potluck! Thanks for bringing us into your day!❤️

Absolutely love this song.....especially the Baby Elvis vocalization - so sweet and stunning. Love the later Elvis versions as well, of course. His voice is just something else as he grows into his vocal instrumental power and magic. Awesome stuff 💯⚡❤️

I like both versions. Elvis had the most beautiful voice. I love songs where you get to hear just Elvis singing. Love your reactions. Keep on doing them? One of my favorites is Young Dreams from King Creole. Also, They Remind Me Too Much of You.

Elvis sunday has become such a staple of my week. ❤ Elvis Presley 53 - 77, I love every single word he sang! But this time period, his voice just had that little something extra. The tone of his voice and those high notes, almost feels beautifully heartbreaking. My favourite song from this period is 'Theres always me' you should give that one a listen.

Coincidentally Fil, on the Wings of Pegasus channel (very intelligent analyses of various artists, including Elvis, by an actual musician), did a comparison recently of the Elvis v Terry Stafford version of this. Of course, for me, there is no comparison, the TS version being lightweight pop music with nowhere near the emotion and soul Elvis always brings to his interpretations. Bizarrely, I think TS had a number 1 with this song, which just proves to me how many gems Elvis recorded, particularly in the early 60s, that could have been major hits if released as singles.

I liked the 2nd version better. Elvis's voice seemed a bit stronger but so did the instruments. Regardless, there is NO one who can sing better than Elvis! I don't know if you've done Kentucky Rain but it's amazing IMO!

The "da da dada da da" must have been a piano. I love this song and i missed the deep growl in the second version which at all sounded a bit better. Please prepare not to get a heart attack. Many of his songs start like a rocket. That was fun! Thank you!💚☀️

You can definitely hear a difference between songs in the way it is presented. The second song is much more dramatic and has a more versatile vocal range. Simply amazing and dreamy. It rises and falls in tones miraculously.

Hi Nick. Suspicion is one of my favourite Elvis tracks of the 60's. The instrument you hear in the first recording is a vibraphone (bit like a harpsichord), played by the great Boots Randolph who also played sax on some of Elvis early 60's recordings such as Girls Girls Girls and the great first post army Elvis is Back sessions in March/April 1960. The vibraphone is absent from the second version you played, accounting for the main difference between the two recordings, as well as the Jordanaires' backing vocals. As you suspected, Elvis' vocal is the same on both versions. Love your reactions and you genuinely seem to respect Elvis and his amazing talent. Thank you.

I love this song. Both versions sound great. IMO, the Terry Stafford recording sounds like a passable Elvis imitator. He obviously was trying to sound like Elvis. Probably why he was basically a one hit wonder. Great reaction as always.❤❤❤

I liked the second version. Sometimes the remastered once wash out his voice and the instruments to loud. I guess I have also heard the Stratford version more and thought it was Elvis. If you do the Stratford version would like to hear your reaction.

Such a great song & Elvis sounds magnificent, it has to be one of his best vocal performances from the 60's. The second version with extra base is much better! I agree Nick, listening to these songs does evoke a feeling of nostalga, I have very fond memories of the radio playing & of a time where life was more simple & carefree. Thank you Nick, always interesting & on point!

Hi Nick, this track was written by by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. They wrote 25 songs for Elvis so that might account for the “familiarity” to it. According to Keith Flynn 'Suspicion' was released without backing vocals on the 1964 Spanish EP Viva Las Vegas (3-20820). This was done by eliminating one of the stereo channels.” That suggests the original release had backing vocals. I do see that the album image of the first song you played mentioned “remastered” so whoever did the remastering might have either used the 1964 Spanish release or taken the backing vocal off as part of their process. Although, listening to the original release on Pot Luck, the only backing vocal comes from Ray Walker’s bass with a strange sounding ‘suspicion’ growl.

The 2nd one is without all the effects, overdubs, etc. After Elvis is done with the basic studio band, the singers and horns and others are brought in or whatever is needed, and then mastering is done.

Happy Sunday, Nick! Absolutely love this song when sung by Elvis! To me, Terry Stafford's version is like a £ shop (or $ store) version - the backing vocals are offensive to my ears, and Terry Stafford is like any other bad Elvis impersonator...

----- potentially was another #1 song for Elvis, but.... Terry Stafford, one hit wonder & Elvis sound-alike put it out on a single (even though Elvis recorded it first and it was just an album cut, not a single for him at this point). Terry used an elvis imitation vocally. RCA (Elvis' record label), put it out as a single once they saw Terry had a #1 hit with it, they put it out... unfortunately it was already over exposed by this point and didn't go anywhere. Similar scenario for one hit wonder, Joe Dowell who stole Elvis' song Wooden Heart, got a #1 song, and then RCA decided to put out Elvis' version (which Elvis did record first, but not as a single). This would have given Elvis 2 more #1 songs, which could've equaled 20 total .
