Some of the writing in the video may not be so accurate. The abandoned Ely Level Crossing or Ely North Junction Level Crossing was closed on the 1st of November 2018 according to Google. In the video we take a look at the crossing in its current state and take a look at the bridge after the upgrade and new equipment that was added. Some of the crossing floor has been taken up in the middle of the tracks and blue bags have been fitted on the lights to I guess not confuse car drivers. The signals are now set way earlier then before as there’s nothing for them to protect. The bridge was also redesigned into a one way road to make a better cycle path for cyclists. The crossing was also closed to encourage drivers to use the new Ely Southern Bypass. If you want to see more about it then here’s the link to the website www.cambridges... Oh yes, if your trying to tell me that you can’t see them at night, the wigwags have been bagged up so even at night now it’s hard to see them flash, Iv been there when it’s been dark and still had to look closely to see them flash.

Good video 👍 Shame I never got to film this crossing when it was still open but it's quite weird how the crossing equipment has just been left and not turned off. Can't imagine how much power it's wasted.

Hmm I it Is quite strange that by now they haven’t turned the lights off by now. I managed to film it when it was here but not on a good quality device like the one I have now

I think it's in case they reopen the level crossing, it'd be more resourceful to keep the equipment in situ rather than remove it completely

Well they have began to remove the crossing floor, I’m most certain there going to remove it at some point.

Very interesting and well edited video! I never got to film here whilst it was still open, which I'm still a bit disappointed about. Still, I've been past it with the bags over the lights myself, and if it were still open, I'd have probably filmed it three times by now. Gone but never forgotten, especially with that electricity bill! 😂

this was my favourite one, I remember a passed it when it was open when I was 3 years old, and many other times :'( same with Poole in Dorset but luckily that hasn't closed the lifting bridges

All the Wigwags have been recovered over now. One thing I don't miss about this LC is the amount of lowerings and and traffic stuck at the crossing.

@@UKLCSandT I think why they covered them up was because network rail were getting calls that the crossing lights were always on. I never liked that crossing one bit.

one time I had a class trip to Cambridge when I was in year 3. we passed Ely and the coach driver didn't see the gates. luckily, I noticed. that was funny, but we had to take a separate route lol.

It now has blue bags over all the wigwags, barriers down and their lights are on.

Yep, it had them blue bags originally but some of them fell off or got damaged so they had to replace them.

@@UKLCSandT Oh okay, that crossing has given some of my family bad memories. My grandad about 30 years ago was driving under the bridge and got stuck. All trains were cancelled lol.

Well it was raised for I think a weekend back in 2019 because the line was closed through Ely.

Apparently it was a safety thing, they had to keep flashing for a certain amount of time, I think the reason why they still haven’t been disconnected is because it could interfere with the signalling system and make the signals think there’s a fault in the crossing and could keep the signals go to danger.

Nah there’s already a bridge here the crossing will just get taken up in time and it will just be a dead end road like it is now.

i agree! very interesting video never knew it had closed, so what do tall vehicles do now? I'm guessing it was closed being next to a very busy station

Well there was a new bypass built called the Ely Southern Bypass now the lorries use that, the bridge next to the crossing got its road turned into single file and it is a little deeper now. That’s why the crossing is closed now course it doesn’t need to be there anymore.

This will probably be a stupid question but how come they cant just turn the lights off?

Apparently it was a safety reason apparently they had to keep the lights on for a certain amount of time but, it’s been town for like 2 years now so I’m surprised it hasn’t been turned off.

The road traffic lights (and the whole crossing for that matter) are tied into the signalling system, I believe. Turning them off would mean you can't clear the [train] signals, as the signalling still expects the road lights (and barriers) to be working and looks for that feedback. (Probably especially with The Pandemic™ being around, removing the crossing connection has taken a bit of a backseat, seeing as it's not making it more difficult to run trains now...)

Hmm yeah I know that these type of crossings work with the signalling system, the signaller would have the crossing on manual raise and would just never raise it so the crossing remains clear. They would probably have to update the signalling system which I heard there is meant to be a signalling upgrade happening in Cambridgeshire on this line so they’ll properly deactivate it then.

Useless info, many years ago I visited Ely and one of the pubs was burnt out, apparently there had been a big fight at a wedding reception, that had got very out of hand. All the locals knew about it.🤪
