Thanks so much !! .... . Moving interview on BBC breakfast 12.10.22 ..
The parents of an 11-year-old boy who was electrocuted at a rail depot have backed a film warning of the dangers of trespassing on the rail network.
Harrison Ballantyne died in June 2017 after entering Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal in Northamptonshire to retrieve a football.
The boy, from Crick, climbed on to a stationary freight wagon and received a fatal electric shock from an overhead cable.
His mother Liz Ballantyne said making the film was "difficult, but something in my heart that I knew needed to be done".
The short film, called Harrison's Story, external, was made in conjunction with Network Rail, British Transport Police and the rail industry.
It features an actor playing Harrison, who lists a series of events he "didn't expect to be my last..." such as his last day of school, last kickabout or last time seeing his mum, before explaining how they went to search for the football.
"I didn't even notice the power lines... I didn't expect electricity to just jump at me through the air," he says.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast News, Harrison's mother said: "Having gone through what me and my family have gone through, I had to do something to try to prevent another family from going through the same."
It forms part of a campaign, external aiming to deter trespassing.
There were 19,408 trespass incidents on the UK rail network in the last financial year with a quarter of those involving under 18s, Network Rail said.
Mrs Ballantyne said, with the nearest train station more than six miles (10km) away, she "had never realised that I needed to educate my children about the dangers of the railway".
Despite not touching the power cables, Harrison died at the scene after he was hit by 25,000 volts of electricity which had formed an arc.
Drew Ballantyne, Harrison's father said: "I didn't know that electricity could jump and arc, and I doubt that he did either."

Beyond sad, poor little soul, obviously a loved & wonderful lad. Great credit to Harrison's bereaved mum Liz - how many lives her bravery may save she'll never know.

Track side is such a dangerous environment, even if your at a station or not. Overhead wires contain 25,000 volts upwards and the 3rd rail contains 750 volts plus. As a train driver I have been involved in a couple of near misses and its absolutely terrifying, if you drop a ball, mobile phone etc on a track just leave it.

As a former MOM people need to know how dangerous the railway can be. Trust me ive seen the results the overheads can jump 9ft and your dead.

Exactly people believe you need to actually touch the wires to be electrocuted but it's a myth electricity always looks for the easiest route to earth and it can jump to find that route .hard hitting video should be shown in schools there's not enough education on how dangerous trespassing on the railway is

I’m a little confused about the electricity arcing or arching? I had no idea about the electricity jumping, is it the same principle as subways? This is so sad and terrible
@joshuaedwards6733
@joshuaedwards6733 Жыл бұрын
Briana winks Electricity can jump the gap if you get too close to the wires you don't have to actually touch them to get a shock of 25,000 volts the higher the voltage the further it can jump as for subways the Electricity runs through a 3rd rail which carries 750 volts if you touch that you stick to it

I'm commenting on this video becuase the comments are turrned off on your other video titled "harrisons story". All i need to say is don't shift the blame. It was not the harrisaons fault. He was murdured by the National Rail Co-orporation. How dare you reduce his legacy to that disgraceful awareness video shifting the blame on him. Apologise to his mother, put up a sign, own up to your mistake.

You what? He trespassed on the railway and climbed atop of a freight wagon and got electrocuted to death. How is that the fault of anyone else’s but his? How was he murdered?
