According to Homer, the Elysian Fields were located on the western edge of the Earth by the stream of Okeanos. In the time of the Greek poet Hesiod, Elysium would also be known as the "Fortunate Isles", or the "Isles of the Blessed", located in the western ocean at the end of the earth. In Greek mythology, this was like Heaven - reserved for virtuous and noble people.

Some of them delight themselves with horses and with wrestling; others with draughts, and with lures; while beside them bloometh the fair flower of perfect bliss.” ~Pindar c. 518 - 438 BC
