The hydraulic fluid does compress slightly when the tool touches the sheet and softens the impact.

The hydraulic tools still have an advantage when punching holes smaller than the material thickness and forming hard brittle materials. We run some parts that get .055" holes in .075" 310 and get countersinks formed, a stamp, and a chamfer. I can't get good forms on the servo machine. On the hydraulic 255 I can form countersinks that look better than ones I can cut.
