I just bought a 2004 VTX 1300 with less than 20k miles on it. Yes, you read that right, 20 years old, less than 20k miles. Plot twist: I bought it from a guy here in Texas who sadly got flooded in the recent rains. It took on about a foot and a half of water. He's a friend and too old to ride these days so he told me "$500 and it's yours", so clearly I couldn't turn THAT shit down. Clearly I have my work cut out for me, but I'm happy to do it. Here's the thing, I've RIDDEN for 15 years, but I've never ONCE turned a wrench on a motorcycle. Plenty of cars, and I'm an HVAC mechanic by trade, so I likely have the "mechanical knowledge and skill set" to do the work that needs to be done. That said, I'm always happy to take advice. I've found the owners manual online, but CLEARLY I'm gonna need some parts, and what I DON'T see in the manual are PARTS BREAKDOWN AND PARTS NUMBERS. Curious if anyone here knows where I can find what I guess would be called the "SERVICE" manual, with breakdowns and part numbers. This was a great video btw, you made me even more excited to get mine cleaned up and on the road!

I (social media team) learned from Shane the service manuals don't supply part numbers (only for tools). I don't know where to get them but he would. That's a good question for Shane directly. Have you considered joining the channel to get him daily as a member benefit? You reached the social media team here. We get 300-400 requests a week, so it’s a bit time challenging as you can imagine. Shane does try to answer some non-members' questions when he gets some time so hang tight if you’re not in a hurry. Did you know one of the member benefits is to ask for which videos would work for your needs and get daily "quicks answers" to questions directly from Shane?. Best $1.99 a month you'd spend...of course enjoy the over 700 free videos and access the member only vids with all the other benefits listed below. There are two immediate options that can get you a solution within 24 hours and quite often within the day. Option 1: Consider joining...best $1.99 you'll spend this month 😁 This is great for quick answers. He literally logs in and answers member questions daily! He does an AM and PM check-in to answer all member questions. Great video. I think it also worth mentioning the speed of the cable returning. Worn, bone dry or crud filled cables can make your adjustments seem inconsistent. As mentioned poorly routed cables will certainly make your hair gray. Maybe you could show a video of a cable lubing tool in action since that should be down while adjusting these things.

Is it possible to adjust the throttle cable on a new Honda SCL500 so I can hold a preload without the bike lurching?
@johncasor96982 жыл бұрын
Remember to show how to not over tighten the pull cable to over pull the cable to much,,,, like i did, and it broke the cable and i had to replace it and i really did not have it over tighen to much i thought ... but now i am really looking at that adjustment. i also am doing a CV gasket replacement and guess what, i found the FXRP 1990 bike pull cable end was ready to snap off any day, you really cannot see it unless you remove the air filter which i should do now at each 3K oil change, i will now make it a point to check the carb cables on every oil change, a part which is over looked i think and so important because we ride long distances,,,,
@How2Wrench2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Nice share. I want to encourage you to shift towards using the word "freeplay" instead of "over-tighten". I believe from the well wrote out comment you get how to adjust it now. The reason to use freeplay is that is how it is referenced in the service manual when one looks up the spec. Also we never "tighten" the cable but adjust it to this freeplay specification. You rock! @@How2Wrench The problem I see a lot is the throttle body hits the stop & if the grip is twisted & don't hit it's stop it pops the end right off the cable! Thanks for the reply!

Isn't it true that there really is no way to "adjust" the throttle or idle cables, because you are merely pushing on, or compressing the cable sleeves? Seems to me that there just is no any way to shorten or making the cable longer, short of cutting off or adding a section.
