Ema Klabin House Museum
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907, Ema Gordon Klabin was the daughter of Hessel Klabin and Fany Gordon Klabin, Lithuanian immigrants who came to Brazil in the last decade of the 19th century. Her father, who became a naturalized Brazilian in 1923, was an entrepreneur who distinguished himself in the development of the paper and cellulose industry in the country. Educated in Brazil and Europe (Germany and Switzerland), where she resided during the First World War, Ema dedicated herself to numerous philanthropic and charitable activities, in addition to her business activities, assumed in 1946 with her father's death. One notable contribution was her role in the construction of the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paulo.
A lover of music and art, Ema Klabin had a significant role in the city's cultural life, participating in the councils of cultural institutions, promoting artists, participating in charity auctions for the entities she supported, and organizing concerts in her own home with renowned artists.
She soon began to nurture the dream of building a residence where she could live with the beautiful collection that was forming and where she could receive her family, friends, and artists in a refined environment. The house, tailor-made to house her collection, was inaugurated at the end of 1960.
Towards the end of her life, with no direct heirs, Ema Klabin was concerned about the fate of her collection and, like her sister Eva Klabin Rapaport had done in Rio de Janeiro, she created the Ema Gordon Klabin Cultural Foundation to establish a new museum open to the public.
The entrance to the Museu Casa Ema Klabin is free. The opening hours are from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, with entry until 6 pm.
The museum is located at Rua Portugal, 43 - Jardim Europa - SP.
