The imposing Sé Cathedral in São Paulo, renowned for its majestic architecture, conceals a historical treasure little known to visitors: its crypt. Located seven meters below street level, this underground chapel remains in perfect condition, offering a unique experience to those who venture to explore it.
Location and Access
To reach the crypt, visitors can explore two discreet entrances, one on the right and another on the left of the main altar. Most cathedral visitors are unaware of this hidden treasure, surrounded by legends and mysteries that the Catholic Church and tour guides often prefer not to confirm.
History and Inauguration
Officially inaugurated in January 1919, the crypt faced technical challenges and resource limitations at its inception. The then first archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, overcame these difficulties to bring this underground space to life surprisingly 35 years before the inauguration of the Sé Cathedral itself.
Tombs and Historical Figures
The crypt houses thirty mortuary chambers intended for sarcophagi of bishops, cardinals, and archbishops of the Archdiocese of São Paulo. Among them, the tombs of Chief Tibiriçá and Regent Feijó stand out. Chief Tibiriçá, considered the "Prince of the Earth" in Tupi, was the first to be buried in the crypt. On the other hand, Regent Feijó, a Brazilian priest and statesman, is remembered as one of the founders of the Liberal Party of that time.
Visits to the Crypt of the Sé Cathedral are monitored and take place every day, every 30 minutes, with an admission fee of R$ 10.00. Remember that the information may change, always contact the venue.
