Same. It was a bunch of random pop culture crap sloppily thrown together. The film was so disjointed and irrelevant scenes were way too long. If you took out Mary Lou's random fits, that gives you back a half hour. The entire "story" could be summed up in 5m. They never explained jack. The writer doesn't seem to understand how patents work... Though this is a minor gripe compared to the rest of the "movie." I have it a shot because of Bowie and I regret it lol

Roeg really got his start with Corman on MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, with Truffaut taking note from that film and hiring him for FAHRENHEIT 451. It has probably already been pointed out somewhere here that it was Ray Bradbury who co-wrote IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (with Harry Essex) and not Richard Matheson.

I saw "The Man Who Fell To Earth" when it first came out. I'm a sci-fi fan and I tried to like it. But I found it boring. Looking at clips today, I think it may have been the direction. With better direction, this could have been a classic.

I saw it in the theater back in 1976 and was confused along with everyone else. I understood it after repeated viewings since then, went to many midnight movie screenings in Houston in 1979. I'm not a fan of the full version, especially the scene with Bowie, Marilou and the pistol. That scene was completely useless, for me it killed any mystique the film had. My favorite scene is Bowie taking his first walk and seeing the big carnival funhouse clown, scared for a second that's what Earthlings look like. Then seeing the drunk, who is actually what Earthlings look like, foreshadowing what he himself looked like by the end of the film. With the "Poker Dice" soundtrack in the background, freaking brilliant sequence. I just discovered the soundtrack, I always loved the "Alberto" music during the butler sequence, didn't realize it had a name. And they used the music to the song "The Man Who Fell to Earth" in the promos back then when it released, good job by John Phillips.

@@emellemcTommy and Mary’s relationship was both rocky yet tragic. They both hurt each other. Mary introducing him to all these things like alcohol and sex is what ruined him and how he later treated her like ignoring her for television he really was watching porn in front of her, and scaring her into thinking he’s gonna kill her the gun scene is beautiful yet tragic there was no genuine intimacy it kinda mirrored the professor and his students it shows how depressed and driven to the edge of sanity Tommy is and the isolation and his plan being ruined made it worse it doesn’t help that Mary’s one of the people that betrayed him even if she didn’t want to and she still crawled back to him. He had every right to actually kill her he deserved that moment Tommy may have never loved Mary but he did care for her. Him being awkward and silent when they first met kinda showed that he wasn’t really into her and made Mary the more talkative type. “He doesn’t need me.” “Yeah I do.” is beautiful. Him trying to leave her what he can behind when she only wanted him but knew his heart belonged to his wife and finally let him go after their last “intimate” moment together

I tried to watch this esoteric film a second time and managed to stay awake through most of it. Again I missed the ending because I was out like a light for the last 20 more minutes. The scene that stands out for me is when the alien character is in the limousine with the female lead and he is able to see a group of pioneers and simultaneously they can see this strange vehicle speeding by. Something to do with gaps in the time/space continuum or so I’ve read.

As a genre, I love Sci-Fi, but I find most Sci Fi dumb. For Interstellar travelers, water is abondant in space. So the whole premise of "The Man Who Fell To Earth" movie is dumb. I wish more Sci-Fi was written for Scientists and Engineers. For the "The Man Who Fell To Earth" movie, a Phosphorous "drought" would have made more sense. Phosphorous is needed by all living beings (plants and animals) to make and break down sugars. At least the Novel made more sense. In it, Thomas Jerome Newton was trying to build a spaceship ferry to bring the rest of his people (about 300) to Earth from Anthea, which was devastated by a nuclear war.

I didn't think much of this film when I first saw it (although I was quite young at the time, probably too young I suppose), but after a few months of reading Philip K. Dick novels (this film helped inspire the fictional film which appears in VALIS) which I really enjoyed and listening to many of Bowie's albums for the first time I re-watched it. It's now one of my favourites.

The film is great in terms of preety much everything but the plot is so convoluted! Many things happen without getting explained, constant time jumps happen without any indication whatsoever other than characters having greyish hair and there is no exposition at all. I don't like films where 90% of the dialogue is exposition but I do need SOME exposition to bettee understand the plot. All in all I find this film very hard to follow, but ii remains still a very insightful and thought provoking movie with beautiful directing and great acting.

I was 14 when it came out. I wanted to see it with a group of my friends but they wanted to see The Omen, another classic from the ‘70’s, so I was outvoted. Of course I eventually saw it, and many times since and it’s remained one of my favorite sci-fi movies from my teen years.

Great review, and good details yet again! I have to say I personally think this is the most BEAUTIFUL sci-fi movie ever made! Some of the scenery Roeg captures is just astounding! Yet, can it even be called 'sci-fi'? The personal drama in this is SO heavy, at best it's almost an updated version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Newton's brilliance, hidden secret, and undramatic addiction to alcohol over water is so relatable on a human level to this day, the sci-fi aspect is almost non-existent. Yet, when agencies acquire Newton and try to find out 'what makes him tick', it seems so haphazard yet totally realistic to 'intelligence mentality'. Give him a affluent domicile, all the booze he could wish for, an adjacent lab to study him right next door - and a simple lock on the door to keep him in. And then his imminent release - just go! No one responsible, no one to blame, none is the wiser, and nothing was gained. That's the CIA's motto right there! LOL Just a great stunning movie on SO many levels!

Are you sure that his family died? May be not and he still has the time to save 'em at the end of the story, what you see in the movie can be the projection of his own thoughts of dismay about the destiny of his family, may be they are already dead but remember what Newton say to Bryce at the end " I DID THE RECORD FOR MY WIFE, I HOPE SHE CAN HEAR.......THERE'S STILL AN HOPE" This is the essence of this absolute MASTERPIECE: the viewer must use the imagination from the very beginning and that's because the genius of Roeg, I love this director! He had a style that nobody has ever expressed after and before, the non linear timeline in this movie is the reason why the people do not understend the plot.....what you want to understend morons, go to see Avatar sucking your thumbs, that's the kind of movie for you silly viewers. Another line Tommy had could be interpreted as him seeing things too when Mary-Lou visits him in his hotel isolation right before he scares her with the gun he says when he drinks he sees bodies of men and women. This film is in a class of it's own. Thomas Jerome Newton and David Bowie merge together before your eyes. Bowie was, forever after, Newton to some extent. More than science fiction, it is a study of how the noble dream of saving a planet can go awry simply by corruption. A more primitive tribe, will not appreciate someone "technologically overstimulated". Parallel AC proponent Nikola Tesla, who likewise gave us so many inventions we now rely on, was similarly abused by DC fanatic Thomas Edison, misappreciated by the public, and was left alone to die half mad, in relative obscurity. WARNING: Being more eloquent, cultured, evolved for the future, can be a curse amidst a cruder, yet heavier, mass gravity!

This was one of a small handful of sf films of the 70s I managed to miss until recent years. I'm not quite sure what I think of it, frankly. It was certainly nice to see somebody take a serious try at making an sf film in the days before the genre became big- time box office I did find it on the idliw side, I must admit. Some repeat viewings are no doubt in order to more fairly asses the film. Wasn't there a TV film version produced in the mid-1980s or very earlyy '90s? My memory may be tricking me here, but I seem to recall vaguely that there was one such.

I think its a shame that they removed the political thriller elements. It adds an interesting dimension to the plot, as well as a bit more moral greyness to Newton's plans. Also - its never explicit, but i always read Betty-Jo/Mary-Lou as being black for whatever reason. At the very least she has dark hair, and doesnt look much like the one in the movie. Also - for people interested in Tevis's other works, you might be interested to know that one of his other big books was The Queen's Gambit - the one that recently got turned into a Netflix series.

I've grown to like this film more than I did at face value. Admittedly, I first watched it because it had David Bowie in it but found it confusing. I suspect this movie is an adaptation of "Stranger in a Strange Land", a 1961 science fiction novel by American author Robert A. Heinlein. Bowie is a true enigma in his own right. His role in this movie is just perfect for an alien who visits a strange world.

Initially my perception of the nude scenes in the film was about how unnecessarily long they were, I thought they were really being too low in wanting to attract Bowie's audience in this way. After watching this video I realize that it is a representation of the excesses that you mention alcohol, money and obviously sex. My point of view still makes sense to me and yours gave me much more insight, however deep down I still believe that Bowie was secretly used to attract fans. Great video!!!

Other than finding a physical copy (good luck), I do know you can rent/buy it digitally from Amazon, Apple TV, and Vudu in the United States. I don't know about anywhere else, though.

I enjoy this film once or twice a year, but still can't answer your question. I do know, that like "The Black Hole", it's one of those rare films that "doesn't look like any other film."
