Rishi Sunak's blunder probably occurred because he had no inherent 'gut' feeling or deep cultural memory about the importance of D-Day. Additionally, his advisors were probably of the age group that were educated to not appreciate the positive history and traditions of the UK, and the West.

It's really baffling how this could have happened. Was this intentional? As in, he did not want to be seen with European leaders so as to appease the Reform crowd? Or did he really not realize the weight of the occasion? Neither explanation is good.
