I only discovered about King Stephen and the Anarchy a couple of months ago. I am so surprised how this piece of English history is so forgotten and unknown to many people, including myself. So much happened leading up to and during Stephens reign. The white ship disaster, the Anarchy which was a civil war that lasted almost a couple of decades, his death signalling the beginning of the Plantagenet dynasty. Stephen was also a direct grandson of William the Conqueror, arguably one of the most well known Kings of England (at least during the Medieval times) yet Stephen's reign is virtually unknown to many people. I wonder why this piece of history is often overlooked

Thanks for this. I love medieval history, but most people gloss over “The Anarchy”. For once, the era actually feels like a fluidly perilous time, where nobody was safe (lords, as well as peasants) and rulers changed by the month. The next couple hundred years under the Plantagenets were somewhat stable on the island, with most wars being fought on the mainland.

@johntillman60682 жыл бұрын
@@janetmackinnon3411 Things were more stable on the island on which England is located. Although actually not all that much more so. There was the Barons' War and French invasion under Henry II's son John, more feudal warfare against his son Henry III, then his son Edward I's wars against Wales and Scotland, his son Edward II's misadventure in Scotland, wars with nobles and his wife over his court favorites, and war with Scotland early in his son Edward III's reign, before he started the Hundred Years' War with France. Despite the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, Edward III's grandson Richard II preferred to fight in Scotland and Ireland rather than France, until overthrown by his cousin Henry IV, which led to more dynastic warfare. Then Henry V returned to fighting France. But under the ineffective Henry VI, civil war if anything even worse than the Anarchy broke out, ie the Wars of the Roses, in which Plantagenet fought Plantagenet, until the dynasty ended with the death of Richard III in 1485. So if more stable, only very relatively.

As we know from historical sources, there was a widespread breakdown in law and order, so surely small-scale conflicts happened during this? If so, are there any sources or stories? Could have made Matilda Queen given she renounces the title of Empress and allow Stephen to be the Lord Protector. This would divide the authority of the King in which only the Lord Protector had the right to lead armies and call Parliament. But the King or Queen had the right to veto any decision made by Parliament, Collect Taxes, and expense high justice on any noble of the realm, including the Lord Protector albeit this would require the permission or allowance of the Archbishop of Canterbury to prevent possibility of being excommunicated. The Archbishop being selected by the Lord Protector and officially appointed by the King or Queen. If the Lord Protector was decided by the Archbishop to be ill of mind or soul, then he is stripped of his position and anyone aiding the Lord Protector in avoiding his seizure by the Crown would be deemed equally an outlaw and hold in contempt before the crown. It would also be permitted for the King or Queen to lead armies during such a situation. The estate of the Lord Protector was equal to two duchies, while the King or Queen has the right to precedence of taxation over the entire realm and such superceded the Lord Protector. Although the Lord Protector can avoid taxation if he fights wars and leads battle on behalf of the King or Queen. The only way to revise this constitution is by decree of the pope with a new costitution drafted by the Pope, not by the new or current king or queen nor by the Lord Protector. Although, Parliament may petition a new constitution to be approved of by the Pope.
