It still boggles my mind that pop culture seems to think Arthur and Merlin and Vortigern and all those other characters are English [Anglo-Saxon] when in reality they all would have been Welsh.

I mean, is it really surprising? All those figures may have originated in Welsh mythology and/or folk history, but they gained worldwide popularity through the fictional works of French and English authors (not to mention eventually being picked up by English royalty, including Tudors as something of a fascination) all several centuries after their first confirmed and alleged mentions. And considering how the authors were only inspired by the Welsh figures in writing their stories, to me personally it's not at all surprising how those figures entered popular imagination as representing England and not Wales.

So, recently did a deep dive of my genealogy. Found out my paternal grandmothers family line goes back directly to magnus (amongst many other kings/nobles). Goes on for over 3000 years. Nuts. Even crazier when you realize I grew up dirt poor in the Deep South of the US. Figures.

@@TogeShigekatafanI think the same way some historians say “if you have even one single drop of European blood, you could be a distant descendant of Charlemagne” also applies with the Emperor Magnus Maximus. Since both figures leaved a considerable amount of descendants that married with the oligarchy of many European nations which in turn, spread to all social classes, whether as natural or legitimate children. I’m a Dominican who comes from a humble family of agricultural farmers and recently I just found out I’m a distant descendant of Maximus through a Spanish nobleman that arrived in the country during the XVII century.
