The first time I heard the next line "Her name is Incontenitia...", with all the swishing lisp Michael Palin delivered, I almost had to change my shorts. I suppose after getting honed out by Biggus Dickus, it would make any "wife" incontinent.

Those are some of the all time funniest scenes in a movie, along with all the quotable lines of dialogue within them. Every once in a while, I slip a “he has a wife, you know…” into a conversation with friends and/or family members who are also fans of Monty Python movies. The same goes for The Holy Grail. When I was a kid, it was the first movie I saw on a laser disc player. One of my parents’ friends had one, and he lived a few houses up the street. We would do a movie night at his home, and he rented them from a video rental place called Errols. The laser disc was the size of a 33 rpm record, contained in a hard plastic jacket. Sony started making beta max tape players soon after the laser disc technology was being used, and eventually VHS became the medium for new movie rentals (and probably porn, as well). One of the other movies we really enjoyed was Time Bandits, and it’s still a favorite of mine.

I first saw the film in Perth, Western Australia upon its release. The US 7th Fleet was visiting at the time so the cinema was over a quarter full of young sailors and marines just when Monty Python was starting to be appreciated in the USA. It was amazing, every seat was taken and everyone was roaring their heads off with laughter. By the end of the show my ribs hurt and I wouldn't have been the only one.

My dad brought us up to love British comedy here in Australia from the 60’s onwards. He used to listen to The Goon Show in the car with us as little kids. When I got older he and I would watch The Two Ronnies, The Dave Allen Show, Porridge, Dads army, etc. and I have adored British comedy for all of my life, and my son was also brought up the same way as I was and he has a huge collection himself. Also absolutely loved Red Dwarf, a later UK comedy that is brilliant. My dad died in December 2022 aged 87 and I am so grateful that he and I had those times, just us, laughing our butts off. Miss him so much.

I am very guilty at laughing at the most inappropriate moments. The worst was around the graveside at my grandmothers funeral. My gran’s sister wrote the card for the family wreath and instead of writing “From a loving family” she had written “ From a lovely family”. I spotted this at the graveside and started giggling which sort of spread around all those standing there. Not my finest moment! 🤣

I have to admit I laughed at my mums internment, but only because some mad lady showed up who wasn't invited and managed to drop her car keys in the hole. Only myself and my sister saw it happen and we were talking to the vicar at the time, we both just took off running in opposite directions through the graveyard because we couldn't stop laughing. I think the poor man thought we were mad. And she did get her keys back in the end.

There's actually more to the story. As you said the laughter is indeed real and they were extras. They go something like they only have one take of this shot cuz of budget, and they have to be completely still. No reaction, no laughing and anyone who does something out of character doesn't get paid. Hence you see they were so unprepared what's coming when they start rolling.

I don't know if this is true or not. But I read somewhere that the actors playing the soldiers in the background were unaware of the script. They were basically told to just stand there and try as hard as they could not to laugh!

Reminds me of what my paternal uncle said to me at my dad's wedding blessing service, he looked at the organist, and said to me 'bet the organist gives good a good tit job', as I started to laugh his wife hit around the back of head, he went ouch and was in the crap for hours.

I'd like to think the centurion purposefully transferred out any prisoners with the letter R in their name from the Jerusalem prison just so Pontius wouldn't make a further ass of himself. Consequently, a lot of names with S in them, and Biggus Dickus _just so happens_ to have a lisp. And I should've waited a minute before making that comment, as you made the exact same point...

The research, or should I say "wesearch" that went into finding as many words as possible using the letter "r." Michael Palin (as Pontius Pilate) plays a blinder. I've been laughing at this since it first came out and it's _still_ hilarious. Sometimes, it's the less "funny lines," that crack me up! "Wait till Biggus Dickus hears of this!" 😉😉

An episode of The Mary Tyler Moore show from the 1970’s called Chuckles the Clown is widely regarded as one of the best sitcom episodes ever written and that’s all about inappropriate laughter. You should check that one out it’s absolutely brilliantly written and superbly acted out by all the cast members.

I just realised I'm the worst of the worst because you know in Happy Gilmore where he tells him to go to his happy place? Okay, so you know when you're in a room of people and someone says something, then something comes into your head that's like the most inappropriate thing to say at that moment, but a part in your mind says don't be a pussy so you just say it anyway? You're left with this moment where everyone takes that sharp intake of breath, like damn, did I hear that right? That moment right there, that's my happy place.

apparently they were extras that were told to NOT LAUGH or else they'd not get paid, and told nothing about what was going to happen in the scene.

Incontinentia = incontinence. FYI Pontius Pilate wasn't the emperor, he was the governor of Jerusalem. He was the one who couldn't find anything wrong with what Jesus was doing and washed his hands of jesus' crucifixion. Remember, it was the Jewish leaders that wanted Jesus silenced because he uncovered their corruption. I don't know much about the Bible, but I know that much.

11:38 Don't know if you've been advised but that's not the emperor, that's Pontius Pilate. The greeting "Hail Caesar!" has a modern unhappy parallel in the Nazi's greeting of "Heil Hitler!".
