For anyone wondering, since recording this episode I have put 50 hours into Pokémon Legends: Arceus and can confirm that I was right! It IS the best Pokémon game we've had since the DS but it's still far from a "good" game. Enough to say it's "bad?" For the sake of being right - sure!

'pokemon would be better off without the stories at all' (roughly paraphrased) yes, unironically. gen 5 is one of my least favourites because of what emcee says about the 'interesting concept introduced only for them to take it away' aspect, but what makes that more irritating is they interrupt the flow of the gameplay to drag you along the story beats only to fuck off with it and go nowhere. it's a drag. i can't play BW1 at all again without being annoyed by being stopped so much... BW2 is somewhat better, but the replayability.... pokemon may be easy and, yeah, it's carried by monster designs no doubt, but it _is_ really relaxing to play these easy games using this huge variety of monsters with their own learnsets and unique abilities and such--i replay gen 1-4 often enough, and one thing i really enjoy doing is building a team of mons i have never used before, or which are overlooked or forgotten or unobtainable in early game so not really viable on a first run of the game, and seeing what happens. a lot of these mons are underpowered, have poor elemental typings, bad movepools... and it can actually be a challenge, so long as you refuse to use non-hold items in battles. not always, but it's quite fun to cobble together and see how it goes. like it's very fun to me. i have _horrendous_ anxiety, where often, i am an anxious (overpowered) wreck going into boss fights and the like, so, yeah, there is a huge relaxation in playing something that is piss-easy. the problem with newer games is that quick romp is a sluggish wreck because of a story that one would be generous to call mediocre. the best feature SwSh offered was the option to fucking turn off story bullshit, which i did immediately. i want to explore a world with a bunch of cool monsters with no stakes--gen 7 and 5 seem actively hostile to that in particular, and gen 1-4 capture an understanding of that as a point of why the games appeal at all the best. and even platinum begins to show the later story interruption problem with looker, who seems solely to exist to fucking interrupt you to tell you some shit that you don't care about, like a preview of what is to come. (gen 5 also looks pretty ugh to me, i agree with that feeling, but i absolutely hate how--and this is petty but fucking hell do i hate it--all the characters constantly have their arms just sticking out to the sides like, it looks so _bad._ the region itself also feels kinda grimy to me, BW2 especially feels filthy, not helped by the oil refinery location. blegh. and i despise bianca so fucking much, she just annoys me to no end. even her battle animation makes me groan with annoyance. there is something about fem characters being incompetent and shown as clumsy-cute that sets off an absolutely visceral reaction in me, i don't find it cute, i find it insulting and misogynistic and gross as hell and i'm so sick of it.) but goddamn i teared up at the description of the bridge in this. my irritation at the games had already hit a point where i just wanted to finish that shit to transfer my mons up, and i missed that, and that's a fucking _shame._

Man I want to like mystery dungeon, but god no the gameplay is just not for me, repetitive, and easy (I know it's Pokémon but nothing mainline was this pathetic). To be fair I didn't get mega far, but the righting was pretty kiddy fluff stuff. idk maybe just not my thing

The ones before the 3ds titles are the good ones. Team Blue and Team Time and or Sky are the ones to play
