They need to release this on the switch. And while they're at it, make a sequel.

One of my all-time favorite games and one of the big games that made me a lifelong RPG fan. It makes me happy to see this game getting so much positivity lately, I hope it makes it's way to Switch soon (and if anyone reading this has a Wii U, grab it now while you can!)

LETS GOOOOOOO! I love Mario RPG. So many little hidden things, and so many memorable moments. Aside from Earthbound, and Pokemon, this was the game that made me go "I love turn based RPG's" when I was a wee lad. Chrono Trigger was a game I watched my brother play, and he played it so much I didn't end up getting into it because I ended up knowing everything before opening the front door. Everyone always screams "Where's Geno" when they mention this game, and honestly it makes me sad that the percentage of people who go "Where's Mallow" is bordering 0.
@russianbot85762 жыл бұрын
honestly, that's because geno represents a certain masculine stoicism, while mallow is emotional from the word go. this has and continues to mar mallow in the eyes of most masc players... despite the fact mallow's emotional character is fundamental to his character and has great synchronisation with his plot. masculine hegemony cringes away from any character who cries and admits sometimes, a good cry is all you need to bounce back and feel better. geno is clung to as the polar opposite, a mostly blank character with little story who shows physical power above any other character (esp once he's leveled to his nuke button against nonbosses).

You making a video on this great game made me suddenly realize: You're right, almost nobody talks about this one. And that's a shame. But at least you are. :) Thanks! I really loved how this was basically the first game that gave Bowser (one of my favorite villains ever) a more dynamic and likeable side. He can certainly be a villain, sure, but ultimately he's just a big lovable doof who ends up in as much misfortune as he causes. Even if he ever completely 'won' in his evil deeds, I don't see Bowser really hurting people tremendously because he ultimately isn't out there to cause utter destruction. He wants respect and power and a girlfriend; he'll do evil to get it but even he has standards. SMRPG reflects that all pretty clearly and was one of the first games to do so; partly it was played for subversive laughs sure, but there seemed to also be a serious attempt at story development of the oversized spike-turtle. Later Mario games would flesh this out more here and there, but I think SMRPG started the trend in the first place. (Also oops, there's a music overlap mistake at 16:41. Not really a big deal but thought I should mention!)

Always wanted to play this game; Paper Mario was such a sweet & fun RPG on the N64. All the great RPGs of the SNES era are worth trying out, 'EarthBound' and 'Chrono Trigger' especially.

This was the first game I bought on the Wii virtual console. i'd always heard great things about it growing up but before then I never had an opportunity to try it. I'm glad it's continued to get released in places like the SNES classic!

I absolutely love this game. It's unfortunate Super Mario RPG was never on Nintendo's Nintendo Online SNES section or Playstation's PSN. So, the only way to play this gem of a game is through emulation or if you have a still working SNES.

it is kind of a shame that Geno isn't all that much of a character, given how great his (their? its?) visual design is. Feels like wasted potential that he couldn't have been used for something more thematically profound, but it's generally a reach to expect a Mario-based game to try to actually say anything of substance anyway

Still one of the legitimately greatest games Square ever made. Sadly, it rarely ever gets even a fraction of the love and recognition it deserves. Especially nowadays with the downright toxic and even idiotic Smash Bros fandom wrongfully sh^tting on it and it's characters. Here's hoping that it sees a Switch release before that console ends. One can only hope.

"using 2D pictures of 3D models" what does that even mean? like me taking a screenshot of a 3D model?
@EmceeProphIt2 жыл бұрын
Sort of. Most modern 3d games use 3d models set up with 'rigs', which are essentially like joints and bones that allow for movement of things like limbs, the torso, a body, mouth or tail. These rigs are then used to animate movement to create walk cycles, speech, picking up an object, throwing something or swinging a sword. These animations are then put directly into the game itself. This requires a fair bit of processing power, especially for multiple moving entities at once. Games like Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario RPG used 3D modeling in development, but the artists instead altered the models manually to pose the characters in different positions to use for animation frames (Mario running, jumping, Mallow raising his arms to cast a spell, all the frames of Donkey Kong doing a roll attack, and so on). Then they created a 2d image of each 'pose', and use those pictures with a transparent background to create sprites. Saves on file space, plus most devs just didn't have the experience for detailed rigging since it was very new tech at the time with only a few 3D animators in the world back then. Hope that explains it. :)
@luls90002 жыл бұрын
@@EmceeProphIt I'm surprised by your comment. Have you actually done 3D rigging and posing yourself? Sometimes I see people making videos of topics they don't understand (especially gamers). Like 90% of gamers don't even know what porting code means. I heard people say things like Pokémon Fire Red is a port of Pokémon Red...

this was my first personal RPG exposure (i'd watched my aunty play a number of others, but she jealously protected her saves for good reason), and i was hooked from day one. i couldn't read, so i watched my papa play up to the, oh, second boss, but he was not my aunty, and didn't much care for it. i, however, really, really wanted to play this game. so i would pop it in, and get stuck at the first boss, because, you know, i couldn't read and had no clue what was going on really. i just knew the format was one i really liked. i've played this game enough that it is easy to think this game is very easy, and all my challenge was from youth, so it's interesting to see how wrong i am about that, heheh. i appreciate your commitment to avoiding spoilers, by the way. it's refreshing, when often we see people decrying spoiler warnings for anything older than a handful of months! (mallow is precious but i disagree with the balance; mallow is quite fragile, and i find he falls off around mid-late game so much he becomes impossible to use in the active party.) edit--the tiniest critique i thought you would actually want to have pointed out: a few times you default to he/him pronouns for characters who are indeterminate gender [i noticed in particular the secret boss segment]. it's not a big deal and doesn't detract from your review whatsoever, but i thought you would want to be made aware of it, perhaps.
