I've watched countless videos for different coloring methods...so far you give more tips and helpful info. Which helps in considering how I want my piece to come out. I bought some Ultra Marine by Miniwax last week, beautiful color. However I loved how your green came out so I might have to wait for my Keda Dye packs to come in, or use them on a second piece. lol Can you make something with Red or Crimson? Thanks for all your content! I ordered 15 grams of red and blue, respectively. I'm taking a risk by using this product on an outdoor greenhouse, but I will be applying a low VOC wood sealer as well as wrapping the wood in greenhouse film. I'll update you as to the longevity of the dye under said conditions. Even if it fades after a season, I don't really mind. It costs me half as much as professional wood stain and it is even more vibrant. I am going to upgrade the greenhouse after four years so I can always be apply the dye after that.
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 5 жыл бұрын
Just be sure the wood is fully sealed all the way around, and you may be surprised how well it can hold up 😉 May lose a little intensity in the first two years, but that has been my experience on the outdoors part. The rain has actually been more brutal than the Sun has been, but that is because of me not sealing 100% on some projects. Otherwise, mine has held up much better than I expected once I sealed the wood better. Example: 1 - picnic table I redid I didn't get enough sealer between the boards. Meaning I didn't pull the boards off, then seal the sides of them when I redid the top. #2 I didn't seal a base that I planned on having buried in the ground (very ignorant I know). I used a viscquine plastic thinking that would be a barrier for the top soil rains. Nope lol when she rains is funny how deep that water can soak into the soil. Literally ran up the wood from the bottom side up into the wood coloring itself. Redid this, and sealed all the way down, and has held up for about 18 months now. A big old Maple shades it after about 1PM ish but otherwise, I am even surprised there is still any color left given the first couple debacles I had hahaha.

Keda Wood Dye haha that's awesome to hear! Well I'm really glad to hear there might be a way to get some real longevity out of this product. I'll be sealing every individual strut and I'll be very meticulous now. You know, I had pretty much given up on ever finding a high pigment product on the market. So it was a real shock when I found the colors I had dreamt of for such a reasonable price. I'm really excited about the potential now. Thanks so much and have an awesome day! :D

Every time I try making any sort of green color the dye starts to separate into the base yellow and blue on the wood fibers itself. Using pure Isopropyl Alcohol works better than water, but the separation still happens. This has happened to me on Pine, treated Baltic Birch, and untreated Baltic Birch. Any thoughts on how to get the blue and yellow to stay green together?

is it resistant to scratches? and do you have any experience of painting tiles. I want to paint my bathroom tiles and I want them be glossy like yours. I like the way you do it
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 6 жыл бұрын
The scratch resistance will actually depend more on the clear coat sealer you are using, moreso than the wood dye. Like a hard Nitrocellulose lacquer would probably be a good choice, but I would recommend mixing the Keda Liquid Dye into nitro lacquer. You can just add a couple drops right to the lacquer itself. You could also add a top clear coat or 2 atop of the colored lacquer, to try and protect the colored lacquer, and is much easier to repair if the worst case scenario happens and you do get a scratch. Then you can just take clear and go over the top, instead of redoing the color. Is just easier maintenance wise is all. Hope that helps out, and hey thank you for watching... appreciate it 👍

This is a killer color!!! Thanks so much for this! I’m building a custom guitar that I want to do in this color! One thing I didn’t catch is how many coats of lacquer you apply to get your glass smooth appearance. Can you please advise?
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 5 жыл бұрын
That is a little more complicated to explain, because it really can vary based on the sealer itself. However, on this video was one flash coat (very light coat) let dry, then applied a descent coat, light sanding with 400 grit (unless you have defects which could be a different process, depending on the sealer and defect for how I would approach that) then followed by the top coat. So really this is just 2.5 coats, but if doing a guitar, you may want to consider around 5-7, with wet sand and polishing on top coat. Thank you for watching and generous words. Really appreciate it 👍

Do you think it possible to get similar or close to similar results with some good alder? It is a bit darker but I hope it will shine the color as well in blue.
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 6 жыл бұрын
The dyes work on every wood I have ever tested them on, except black walnut (which is such a dark wood) but the dye stain did color the lighter parts of the walnut and added a tint to it. With that said, the wood really is the foundation to any finish. With alder, the dyes will add depth in the knots and create like a 3D look many areas as the light reflects off the colored cellulose. It is kinda difficult to explain, but when you color and seal the wood, you will see what I mean 🤷‍♂️ Long story short, the dye will color alder, and will add depth and dimensions in areas. It may not be as much as say a quilt maple, but I have seen Keda Dye enhance all wood I have ever applied it to. Even pine and fir has a very nice looking finish with a good sanding :) Hey thank you for watching...really appreciate it 👍

Awesome video and color! Question though- the instructions on the powder dye says to mix with 1 tbsp of warm water first- but it looks here like you add straight to the alcohol and didn't say anything about it being warmed. When I follow the instructions, the dye in the container seems almost milky colored. did you do the warming or is that not super important when it comes to getting a color similar to this. Thanks!
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye Жыл бұрын
The water first helps open the powders up faster is all. Doesnt have to be warm, but I personally like warm water to help the dyes dig into the wood. It can vary based the wood itself. May need to add a little more blue if the wood is more yellow in color. The wood does play a role, as well as the clear coat. Best advice, testing on scrap pieces of your specific project would yield the best results 😉.

The wood dyes were from the Keda Dye 5 Color kit that can be found at www.kedadyeinc.com on Amazon, eBay, or Etsy. The wood was a simple Yellow Pine and a Curly Maple. The wood dyes were mixed into the water based Spar Urethane clear coat sealer. Hope it helps out.

Amazing job, I'm actually planning on dying a mahogany body guitar that colour, but when I add an emerald green dye to a test peace of mohogany, it turns a yellow rather than green. Any idea what I should do to counteract this? Your content is excellent, keep it up 👍

Can you offer some advice? I just purchased the powder Keda dye pack, and I am confused about when you want to use water, v alcohol v. laquer thinner as a base?

Do you know what the formula would be to make this colour green, with the liquid keda dyes? I have the 5 bottle set but wouldn’t know where to start when it comes to the mixing

Subscribed today, and have to say I've stalked your videos today 😊. You make it look easy. I really want to try sanding down a tired old 80's yellowed looking veneered farmhouse table by dying it. Will this dye method work on veneer? I love the teal and gold colors and sheens you did in two other videos with the wood grain showing. Really Beautiful!! Going to pick up your kit on Amazon. Nervous to get started and what supplies to ensure i have before starting. HELP!!!!!

Shelly Norland Thank you for the stalking hahaha never thought I would say that one hahaha It really is very easy, so try not to be too nervous. Okay, so for the table, use paint stripper first. Peel as much off as you can before sanding. You want to do that so you have to sand less, especially veneer. Then, it will take a bit longer, but it runs less risk of sanding through if you use a finer grit like 180 grit. Now even if you have some old wood stain that remains, that is alright, it can add character, as long as the sealer is off. I mean you want to get as much off as you can, but don't think every spot has too be gone. Hope that makes sense? Since it has been sealed before, you shouldn't really need a whole lot of prep other than cleaning off the old finish, because it should have been sanded before, so the wood will not be rough or anything. Once wood table is cleaned up the rest is super easy. Just mix the wood dyes up, let them rest for about 30 mins, and apply. Follow up with a second coat to deepen the coloring further, let that dry, and burnish the dried dyes. Then on the very first coat over the dyes, be gentle, and go with a light touch. After that very first coat dries, then you can be more aggressive and apply the sealer heavier. You could probably go with a good polyurethane, lacquer, or even a wood floor sealer ;) If going with a spray can, you won't need an applicator for the sealer, and the spray, typically can leave the cleanest looking sealer finish, with the least amount of work. You will also need to know if you want a high gloss, which is a wet looking finish, and very shiny, or a flat looking finish, which would be a low gloss, matte', or satin finish. It really is very easy to use Keda Wood Dyes, it really is. You pretty much just need to get the dyes to the prepped wood, and seal them, they should do the rest for you ;) Thank you again for the stalking lol hope that helps out :)

Keda Wood Dye - Wow!!! Thank you for the quick reply and confidence boost!!, Awesome! Ordered the dye kit last nite. Never used stripper before, but heard long ago that citris stripper is good and possibly low odor. If there's a better stripper alternative for my project, would much appreciate a recommend. And, what burnish technique will yield best results?

If you add dyes to a splash of water first, to help open them up better the 99% iso would work.
