What I think is important to note too with the waterborne hybrids, is they don’t ‘peel’ like most gloss trim paints. You can actually SAND your trim and you won’t get that cheap latex gunk.

Great video. In my experience e as a professional painting contractor who has used both products extensively since they came out, the Advance dries to touch usually within an hour even tough the can states much longer, and if you don't need to sand between coats, you can recoat in 4-6 hours with good results, especially when using white or light colors since they typically dry quicker than darker colors. However, the 2nd coat coverage with Advance is better after an overnight dry if you need to ensure a little better coverage if you are concerned the color you are using won't cover very well (such as is the case with some ultra bright/pastels or vivid pure/clean deeper colors). Also, the advance paint takes about 2-4 weeks to fully cure, which means you especially have to be more careful with it for the first several days. We paint lots of kitchen cabinets using Advance Satin mostly at this point, but we sometimes still use the Ben Moore Satin Impervo (oil) product still which in my opinion is still the superior product of the two if it weren't for the additional odor and clean-up required which is usually something we prefer to avoid both for ourselves and the homeowner.
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers Жыл бұрын
Thats been our experience as well. Impervo is an excellent product aside from what you mentioned. We’re starting to experiment with Command from Benny Moore, which is also showing some promise. It performs a lot more like Emerald Urethane. We’ll see how it goes once we get a bit more experience with it.

I have used the Advance Satin on kitchen cabinets. Ben Moore’s tech service is not allowed to veer away from the 16 hour re- coat window however it re-costs perfectly around 6 hours for 2 coat application in one day. I’ve used PPG’s Speedhide WB Alkyd as it states 24 hour re-coat. I’ve applied the second coat after 6 hours with excellent results. This worked well for me. You make the call on your projects. I prefer both of these over the SW Emerald. Just my preference…

Hi Big Stu. For the Advance satin we have found 6 hours to recoat does work. The semi gloss Advance takes forever to dry. We don't do a lot of cabinets so you know more about them than us. We like the SW Urethane for baseboards, doorframes, & doors because we can lay 2 coats in a day no problem. Sometimes 4 hours is fine between coats. Thanks for reaching out.

Great video! Have you ever pushed the advance dry time? I’m also a pro painter and we have 2 coated advance in the same day because I hate waiting as well. I haven’t had any issues with the way it turns out appearance wise. However, I wonder if that would have any effect on its durability. Any thoughts?
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 2 жыл бұрын
We have pushed it along and gotten two coats on in a day. It's easier to do with the satin finish than the semi-gloss. The only thing we run into is patrolling for runs / drips. If we put it on too thick then sometimes it will sag and that's a bit of a pain to fix between coats. I don't think it would have a big effect on durability as long as it had enough time to fully cure after the last coat.

Both of these products are capable of having a good finish. A lot of the finish quality has to do with the application of the product. Emerald Urethane is one of our go-to trim paints and we get great results and finish quality every time with it. Advance also has a great finish to it, if it's applied properly. It's just a bit more tricky to use cause of the open time.

I do high-end new construction and remodels, so I primarily spray Emerald. A lot of Emerald. (Trim/doors/cabinets/furniture) I only brush/roll trim on the quickie/low end jobs... I like using Premium Wall and Wood primer from Sherwin Williams for raw wood. I’m sure there’s an equivalent from Benjamin Moore, I’m just not sure what it is off of the top of my head. Very informative. Is the cure time really 30 days for the Emerald? I am using to paint a dresser. Thanks.
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 9 ай бұрын
So cure time is different than dry time. Emerald Urethane dries to the touch within 2 hours. So you can apply multiple coats in a day if needed. The product (and most paint products) take several weeks to cure all the way through. That just means that the product has dried all the way through and is as hard and durable as it's going to be. A good indication of a paint that has cured all the way through is that you can't smell it anymore. Dunno if that helps you out, but there you go. Good luck with your dresser!

I don't have a lot of experience spraying Advance, but I know dudes that do spray it and it's not too bad. Spraying is it's own deal. There's a lot of technique involved in getting things to turn out well. It's not necessarily about doing light coats. It's more about spraying an even layer for each coat. Any paint will run if you apply too much in the wrong way.

I have used Scuff-X on trim and doors. It's quite a different product than Advance. The dry time with Scuff-X is much shorter (2 hours-ish). It's easier to work with, but I would say that it shows more brush strokes than Advance. That's also affected by how well you lay it down. Advance has a long open time so the leveling agents have quite a while to use their magic.

A lot of guys like using BIN shellac on cabinets. It’s fairly aggressive to work with, but it’s pretty much bomb proof as a base coat. The other option is to use something like fresh start from Benjamin Moore which is 100% acrylic. It’s easier to work with, but you gotta make sure it gets a good bond to the cabinet surface.

help, i recently just painted areas of my house, a couple of bedrooms but mostly the trim, baseboard and doors which is my main concern. i had a professional painter but i bought the paint and used the ben moore line. the trim and doors have been an absolute nightmare. horrible brush strokes, altered finish sheens, excessive drag, not a smooth finish at all. everything was sanded and primed and had to use 2-3 coats just to at least cover the previous white color. i have spent triple on the amount of paint, and double for the labor and im still not happy with the results. i was told to either try regal or aura. which is fine even though its more expensive, i just care that it works and i get the results i want. the ben line is not a cheap paint either, so im quite shocked on how badly it turned out and hesitant on what i try next. now i hear about this advanced line which sounds what im looking for in the finish but the drying time and technique sound difficult and very time consuming especially for repainting over the ben line i used. the believe the painter should of advised me before using all the paint and doing all the labor. its now only been suggested its the paint and was suggested that i use the regal or aura line from bm but im afraid of getting the same result. im using bm because its same bm color throughout the house. any recommendations or advice you have to help with this paint dilemma would be very appreciated. ive never had this bad of an experience with interior painting and such issues with paint.

My job is painting only the boxes of my cabinets with brush and roller since we are getting new drawers and doors. So what do you recommend re prep? I am considering either the Emerald or Advance...Both had primers made for use with them but cannot get either primer at this point due to stock shortage. Have the tine to use the Advance so I am leaning toward that product after your FIGHT video. Should the boxes be cleaned and then sanded? What about priming and the proper one to use? Do I need a high adhesion primer? I have read that the hybrid paint was created to adhere to slick surfaces and that priming or even sanding interferes with adhesion? I was originally thinking of using Krud Kutter and then lightly sanding with 120 paper? Your guidance is appreciated...

Hi Cathy. I'll do my best to help. If you don't mind waiting a day between coats go with Advance. It levels out great, just watch for drips as they are easy to touch up if you get them in the first 30 mins. Krud cutter or simple green are great for cleaning and 120 grit sandpaper should be fine. After sanding wipe down with a slightly damp rag to get the dust off. The Advance will stick to about anything. Good luck!

@SuperVassarBrothers

In many cases you can go straight over oil. You still need to prep the trim by sanding and wiping it down. Sometimes you may still have adhesion issues in which case you’ve gotta use an oil or shellac primer first.

Great review - thankyou! When it comes to usability I find a lot has to do with the finish that you expect. In complex older woodwork (but even modern 6 panel doors) it is hard to get a brushmark-free finish with BM or SW latex paints even with retarder. In that sense I find that these urethanes are "easier" - you need to be careful with the application but no more than traditional alkyd enamels. Do you have any opinion on the sheen - I have noticed that Emerald Urethane satin is suprisingly rough when you rub it. Is that common? Do you have a suggested primer for the satin finish - maybe a shellac primer you sand (that would be for trim, not cabinet doors).
@SuperVassarBrothers

Appreciate the feedback. You are spot on with your assessments. For Emerald Urethane we like the semi gloss and not the satin for trim. For Advance we like the satin and not the semi gloss. If you want a high end primer we like the wall and wood primer from Sherwin Williams or the Multi Purpose latex (also known as pre rite). Happy painting!

I used Behr Alkyd Satin enamel on my kitchen, laundry room and bathroom cabinets and I rolled and brushed them. That was 4 years ago and I really love the way they turned out. But, with that said, I did paint one bathroom cabinet with Emerald paint and now looking back I would use that paint instead if the Behr. Behr was much more affordable at the time for me, but I only used a little over 1 gallon for my large kitchen. Emerald paint would have been better for self leveling and pretty much gets rids of the brush strokes. I’ll be painting another kitchen soon and your video is very helpful. Thank you.

Sorry but the only thing that matters in the end is how it looks. That is what the customer wants. Focusing on dry time, etc., is putting profitability over project quality. Manage your job around dry-time, not selecting products based on how fast the job can be completed. And while the paint is called "interior/exterior" I find that to be more marketing than performance focused. And most all brands utilize this strategy to some extent.

@@SuperVassarBrothers From a paint contractor perspective, factors such as recoat times, ease of application, price, etc., are important as painters are looking at a very short timeline and usually what is best for their bottom line and convenience. From a client perspective they will be looking at the finished work for the next 10+ years from an appearance and performance perspective. So, while the Emerald will go on easier, dry faster, is cheaper, etc., it won't level or take on an enamel-like finish that the Advance will, which is what should be the most important factor if the best finished appearance is what is trying to be achieved. I've looked at both Advance and Emerald after cure times and the Advance has that hard enamel look while the Emerald definitely has that acrylic finish appearance. I can build into the cost of the project the extra time & couple bucks it takes to work with Advance, but I can't build into the cost the leveling and "enamel" quality that Emerald lacks to achieve the same level of finished appearance. Especially for older homes, Advance makes all the difference in the world.

As professional painter of 25 years, Personally I rarely uses these types of products. While they do cover well and are very durable, They just are too much of a hassle to use IMO. They like to run, dry really slow, and if the surface isn't in perfect shape it will show basically everything. It doesn't have a lot of build to help hide scratches and blemishes. Id rather prime with an oil base primer, then paint with a high quality acrylic. I find the primer actually sticks BETTER than these and gives a really nice finish due to the high build of the primer and ease of sanding if needed. Just my opinion but it took me many years to figure it out.

My opinion is that Emerald Urethane is way ahead in versatility and I like that it is more workable directly out of can for brushing doors and trim and doesn’t produce drips. Then, if you want to do cabinets with it, you can add the conditioner for extended open time and better leveling. For people that shy away from the price, I will say that most 3 bedroom homes the trim and doors can be done with one gallon with leftover for touch up, so because of its durability it’s definitely worth the price, and is actually a value, verses using a cheap paint that collects dirt and oil immediately. Urethane will harden enough to never collect oil and dirt.

DIYer here. Painted some in-place melamine cabinet boxes yesterday with a coat of SW primer and then SW Emerald. The result was as close to a factory finish as I’ve ever been able to achieve. One additional factor is the roller that the SW store employee suggested - mohair. That’s what I’ll be using from now on. Two coats of finish paint is still needed, but this was also as close I’ve come to stopping after one coat. We painted the cabinets in our old house using Behr Marquee - there’s no comparison. SW is light years ahead. I haven’t tried BM Advance, so I can’t speak to that product.
