This tutorial is very helpful... I have cut and sewn the cups some time ago, and with the help of the tutorial will be much easier to put all the pieces together. Do you have to stretch the elastic? I did not realized when you where sewing if there was any stretch or you were just carefully positioning the elastic at the margin of the cup. I admire your sewing skills! All the elastic and stretch seems a bit scary.
@EmeraldErinSews6 жыл бұрын
Hi Anca, No, you don't have to stretch the elastic, just position it along the edge and you can have just a hint of tension if it helps you place it better. The best thing to do with elastic is practice!

Is the cup measurement thing correct? I have 6 inches of difference, which according to your guide would be an E cup, but when I buy bras at the store I'm usually B-C cup.
@erin98684 жыл бұрын
You'd be shocked at the number of people wearing the wrong bra size. If you want to fall down a rabbit hole you never knew existed, I *highly* recommend r/abrathatfits on reddit. They have an insane calculator that takes a few more measurements than the method used here and is a really good starting place for most people. Just.. Be prepared - your cup size is probably bigger than you expect and your band size is prob smaller. It's a little overwhelming, but it's a great community of people who are very kind and accepting.

really nice video. thanks. i just wondered, did you stretch any of the stretch bands on the cups or the big one around the bust while sewing of did you sew everything pretty "loosely" And did you use a specific needle?
@EmeraldErinSews5 жыл бұрын
I like to add just a slight hint of tension when sewing elastic. Not really pulling on it or stretching it gather the fabric, just enough so it doesn't stretch out with sewing :)

Hi! Recently bought your pattern and was wondering: is there any way to sew this by hand? I love sewing but can't afford a sewing machine :( on that note, can you recommend any fairly cheap beginner sewing machines?
@EmeraldErinSews5 жыл бұрын
hmm, this might be difficult to sew by hand, since I don't know of a stretch stitch hand stitch, my top recommendation is actually look online for people selling used old machines, I have a Bernina 830 from the 70's that is an amazing machine that never quits, and you can fix them up and get parts for them pretty inexpensively. Just check when you buy them that they haven't been sitting in a damp basement for years, because they can seize up and then you can't fix them. But most people have one that was their grandmothers that was well taken care of :) Happy Sewing! Erin
@fionafiona11462 жыл бұрын
Zigzag stiches by hand are still stechy in the direction of the fabric stretch. I could also go to my local Maker space and have heard of library and "evening school" classes with similar offers of sewing machine access. If anyone sees this again.

Great video!! Can you use stretch fabrics with this pattern? Maybe scuba knit or jersey
@EmeraldErinSews6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joy! Yes you can- but they will affect the fit depending on how stretchy they are- the more stretch, the less supportive. So a scuba would probably work really well- but a jersey on it's own might not support very well. :)

Thanks so much for the tutorial. What I have been looking for (for a very long time) is a pattern for a front-close, no-underwire, no-stretch-fabric (all cotton, linen, or silk, please!) bra or bralette. I have skin issues with synthetic fibers. Any ideas? Thanks!
@EmeraldErinSews6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brenda, I don't know of any patterns with no synthetics, (because that would mean no elastics either). But I'll let you know if I see anything!

I would greatly appreciate that! I have been looking at all sorts of things that I think "that MIGHT work, if ..." and it doesn't.
@veronikavysoudilova96976 жыл бұрын
@@writerinfact1768 what about using tshirt type of cotton? I saw someone to do the under breasts part without elastics, but what about if you put elastics inside cotton fabric? You can make straps without elastics as well. I think it might work for someone with smaller breast as myself. (sorry if it's kind of inaccurate description, as a non native speaker who never spoken about sewing before, I have kind of hard time explaining what I meant :D )
@writerinfact17686 жыл бұрын
@@veronikavysoudilova9697 Worth considering, thank you. Part of the problem is that, until I lose the rest of the weight I'm supposed to, I need support as well as comfort - and the ability to open/close the bra without engaging in Olympic gymnastics!

I just bought the pattern 🤩 For the first model you made.. At 5:42 you said you treat the lining and the outer lace as one piece. But can I sew them separately (lining being mirrored) so that the seam is enclosed and not rubbing on the nipple?
@craftsandnails3 жыл бұрын
Hi!! Can i use straight stitch to make the whole piece? Im having problems with the thread to get the zigzag evenly. Thanks
@leod1613 жыл бұрын
The thread will have a much higher chance of snapping. Zig-zag allows it to stretch. There is a way to make a zig zag stitch by hand but it takes a while. I found a video on how to do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHmyZKSaqs-Amdk

This may seem like a dumb question but when i go to buy the hook and eye for the back are they called bra extenders? That's all i see when i go to Joanns but it looks like the hook is sewn to the eyes to only extend a pre-made bra.
@EmeraldErinSews4 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question, bra extenders are similar but different, because they are meant to add extra length to a bra that you already have. But not all fabric stores have hook and eyes available
@rainbeauxunicorn52373 жыл бұрын
Is there a seamless option for the cups? Or is the seam a bralette characteristic?
@shannonec5 жыл бұрын
Just curious why you put the ring on the front? All the bras I own have it on the back. I'm assuming so the double thick strap isn't visible & I would imagine it's more comfortable with only one layer on your shoulder. Just wondering if there is a reason you did it this way. Also do you ever just continue your FOE & use that as the strap? Thanks!
@EmeraldErinSews5 жыл бұрын
Great questions! I like the ring on the front for this style, because it's easier to adjust yourself, and it can also be more comfortable than having the adjuster on your shoulder blade. It's also so that you can have the whole strap as one piece, instead of having the adjuster at the back where you usually have a front strap to a ring at your shoulder blade where the adjustable back strap connects. So since this is a more beginner style pattern, I wanted to make the construction as simple as possible :) Also you could use FOE as your front strap, but it's much less supportive than strap elastic (which is a less stretchy elastic). I do use FOE for a front strap on some of my bras, but it's usually a doubled front strap and I add stabilizing tape between the fold to take away the stretch. Also it doesn't go through sliders nearly as well as strap elastic, so it's hard to have adjustable straps made completely out of FOE. I'm coming out with a pattern soon that uses FOE as the front strap, but regular strap elastic with adjusters in the back :)
@shannonec5 жыл бұрын
@@EmeraldErinSews thank you so much for the reply. I was thinking the same thing, that it would be so much easier to adjust! Your pattern is my very first try at this, I made my first bra last week but then on my second one my curiosity got the best of me & I had to ask. I can't wait to see the new pattern! @EmeraldErinSews6 жыл бұрын
I like to use a stitch that is about 2.5 X 2.5 , so a relatively small zig-zag. The most important thing is to make sure that your stitch isn't too long, and allows the elastic to stretch without snapping the stitch :) Happy Sewing!!

This is a great tutorial and I learned so much, but I'm very confused by the elastic finishing the cups. Why is it there? The fabric isn't stretch and you aren't pulling it while you sew so it's not gathering the fabric. What does it do?
@EmeraldErinSews4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The elastic is there for a couple reasons, one reason is that it makes the edge nice and soft against your skin, and the other reason is to finish the edge with something a bit more stable so it will hold the shape better :)
