In 1969-1970 I was a passenger in USAF C-130's about once per month, and one horrible trip in a C-123. I always felt it was a good flight when they opened the rear loading door as we rolled along and there were no fire trucks following us.

We flew through Pago Pago on our way to Sydney from Hawaii on a MAC flight. Practically got stuck there, an issue with the C5. As we were taking off they had a smoke alarm in the cargo bay. Turned out to be condensing mist from the ac. Frightened this white knuckle flier as I was sitting in the row by the opening to the cargo bay. Makes life interesting!

Do you remember doing this before the ipad? Alot of math was involved and charts..... it was fun, we had to figure out fuel burns and times to destination by hand at different altitudes. They gave you things like CRIT FU BN in the flight plan, but you had to know what that pertained to. Most didn't. The International diversion program that was developed at our airline was one of the best things that I saw come out of my 36 years with the line. The only bad part was it was only taught in the SIM at 5:30 am... I hated that part. It was a 2:30 get up for me to drive in and teach. The cows weren't even ready to be milked

Hey Juan. I’m a dispatcher at the competition. I worked the SYD desk for 2 years. What caught my attention in this video is that you guys file airways on LAX-SYD. We almost always file random routes. Could be north or south of the Bravo airways. I will say Oakland Oceanic are the rockstars of ATC. Whatever you need they can accommodate. Pago Pago (I think they pronounce it Pango Pango) or Apia are critical for ETOPS. If the wx there is below alternate mins things get complicated really fast.

thanks for correcting the pronunciation of Pago Pago. I used to live there in the early 60's. and we flew in on a 4 prop engine plane of Pan Am. by the time we got there from Hawaii we only had one engine left running. All the planes used to fly over our house and I saw quite frequently plans with less than all engine's running. I was at the Grand opening of the extension of the airport to allow Jet engine planes to land. quite the party for a little Kid of about 9 years of age.

Reminds me of a similar situation when the Flight Engineer told me we were losing oil quantity on a flight from Anchorage to Tokyo Narita and asked what we should do. I looked at my watch and suggested lunch. A 747 with four engines simplifies the process by not having the ETOPS requirements. I like it when the Department of Redundancy Department is involved in the design of the airplane and specifies four engines. We did eventually have to shutdown the engine an hour and a half out of Narita when the low oil pressure light and gauge confirmed the oil quantity loss. A non-eventful, three-engine landing was made and it wasn’t the last in my very grateful four engine career.

The letter "g" in Samoan sounds like "ng"; thus Pago Pago is pronounced "Pango Pango." Pago Pago International Airport (PPG) is located at Tafuna, eight miles (13 km) southwest of Pago Pago. There are international flights to Samoa 4-7 times daily by Polynesian Airlines:[77] Pago Pago is a 35-minute flight from Apia in Samoa. Most flights are to and from Fagali'i.[56]: 512 [138] There is only one flight destination from the territory to the United States: Honolulu International Airport, a five-hour flight from Pago Pago by Hawaiian Airlines. Of the 88,650 international arrivals in 2001, only 10 percent were tourists. The rest came to visit relatives, for employment reasons, or in transit. Most international visitors are from the independent country of Samoa (wikipedia)

Thanks, Juan. My Wife is an LAX-based F/A with DAL and flies this route routinely. As a pilot myself ASEL PP I am aware of ETOPS but until this video, I wasn't aware of the rings...Love your channel. Thanks for the excellent reporting.

I'll be flying for my first-ever overseas trip from SYD to LAX in Feb or Mar. It will also be my first time flying since I got rid of my fear of flying by watching channels such as yours, 74Gear and Mentor Pilot. I am so excited. I really want to fly in an 380, but if I fly a 777, I want you as my pilot!

Great discussion. I’ve never dealt with ETOPS even though I’ve flown Gulfstreams across both ponds. The planning is more substantial and I like the specific divert bases planned out. With a gulfstream, you can pretty much land anywhere with a paved surface and some reasonable runway length. Really like understanding the communication and the recovery operation through dispatch. We had an ops center that did similar duties, but recovery for 300 people, not something we could ever do.

Fantastic to see you out of Sydney! I've followed for a few months and had a great surprise to hear you out of 'old Sydney Town'. Used to watching discussions relating to events in Northern hemisphere so its a treat when local. Thank you and hope you enjoyed the fireworks show over the harbour... and got your hrs sleep/rest, in.

I remember flying into Cortez Colorado at 2 o’clock in the morning back in the early 80s and it was a very eye-opening realization when I went back out to the airport in the morning to fill up the aircraft of how close all the mountains were around that airport. The Jipson approach plate does not really do it justice in your mind. Thanks for the video

There are also some interesting ETOPS maintenance training and qualifications requirements as well as odd rules such as the same mechanic can not perform nor sign off on identical tasks for both engines. There are also special markings that identify an ETOPS aircraft to ground personnel so they are aware of the unique qualifications and requirements required for the servicing of the aircraft.

Well Jaun.. This video sums up a lot... Like "Professionalism"! Us flying regular folks sometimes slip into a comfort level and forget that a real "Professional" is basically in charge of our lives for a while. It's Very comforting to learn what you tell us non avionic types. CNN has nothing on your coverage of Air issue's, I come to your channel first for news and updates. Happy new year to you and your family and all your viewers. Thanks. Best of 2023 to you!

Reminded me of a trip out of Clark in a 141 -1989, as a pax trying to get to Travis. We had to divert to Wake Island due to problems with the plane. Waited for what I remember to be about 12 hours for another 141 - the new bird had palletized seats (facing backwards). We got some great food and got to explore the island.

There are very few sources in the world that explain the logistics of air flight like the Blancolirio channel. So many of us who fly routinely 'trust' that someone has thought through this process and emergency procedures. When we cross these massive bodies of water for hours, the miracle/reliability of jet travel becomes real very quickly. I hope we one day find out what happen to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 as this anomaly clouds what was otherwise a stellar record with the Boeing 777 airframe Thank you Juan for the gift of this channel, your coverage of the industy and weather in our region (S.F. Bay Area/N. California). When you return, we should have ample water for part of 2023. 🤣

Chances are fair to good that the plane itself was not to blame for its disappearance (ie it was not a technical fault) but the human who was commanding its movements. The "pilot" in charge seems to have gone to great lengths to thwart investigations.

I've only taken a few of the super-long flights. My "home base" is PDX so my normal trans-pacific route is quite a bit shorter. "Only" 12-15 hours to reach most of the far east. To me the 18-20 hour flights are mind boggling that the aircraft, crew and fuel all can last that long non-stop.

Speaking of water, on the 27th a private Embraer EMB-505 Phenom 300 went off the runway at the west end of Hawthorne Airport in California. The tail smashed through the ILS equipment and the fence. Part of the adjacent road, Prairie Ave., was closed for awhile. News reports were saying the plane took off from Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming, and landed at Hawthorne. Everybody on board was OK, and got off the plane safely. Some people speculated that the weather had something to do with it (dark, and rainy). I'm puzzled, though. The weather in Jackson Hole was undoubtedly worse-- colder and possibly snow on the ground, though the plane may have taken off from there in the daylight. It was merely raining in Hawthorne. I appreciate the rain (it's pouring at my house a few miles from the airport right now), but it can be a bit much at times!

Great content, thanks. Reminds me of a diversion into there back in Feb1980. Back then the VOR voice ident used the correct Samoan pronunciation:"This is Pango Pango VOR"..... Anyway, with doppler drifting and running out of options, it was nice to pick it up! And then have a couple of quiet beers on the beach.

This is the first time I hear you mention that you were a 141 driver out of Travis! Very cool! I wasn’t a pilot, but crewed the C-17s out of McChord and quite a few of the chiefs I met were prior 141 guys from Travis as well. I am now working my way towards and R-ATP and hopefully one day go back to flying what I fixed. Love the channel and as soon as I see you post a new video I throw it on. Cheers!
