Emergency ELT: Texas to Home P2

Күн бұрын

Part 2 of the flight from Mineral Wells, Texas (MWL) back home to Chicago's Aurora Airport (ARR). I heard an ELT (emergency locator transmitter) while monitoring the guard frequency (121.5) on a backup. I reported this to the air traffic controller and you could hear her question other aircraft so she could attempt to triangulate the location to help emergency responders locate the aircraft. The video ends with a very bumpy RNAV LPV approach into ARR where the STEC 3100 did a fabulous job of flying the coupled approach.

way to keep that upwind wing tucked. that is/was a busy cockpit. plus you are narrating for us. i am blown away by the super smooth ap altitude roundout. you are going to have a blast this summer. i always noticed after a xc that it doesnt really hit you how fatigued you are until you are walking to your car. i would say those close ups of the ap and narration for a procedure are some of the best real world tutorials i have seen. very enjoyable. thank you

Awesome...thanks for the feedback Brian! I'm loving the autopilot and my lack of fatigue. Just flew back single pilot IFR with low ceilings today and it's night and day difference than what I was doing before that. I'll have another sporty/gusty landing to show when I get caught up on editing. :)

The 3100 is going to make your life a lot easier for sure! Hand flying is fun, but the auto pilot sure can reduce the workload, especially in IMC! Can't wait to hear what you decided on for new nav/com's.

Loving it! Just got back from the KY POA fly-in and I departed IFR in low ceilings. So much better to have the 3100 to help me out as it is busy single pilot doing that. :) I was hoping to have the unveiling right after the annual and they weren't able to install it all. Some people did catch a ride /sit in it and saw a few of the new pieces. :)

I flew a U-3A (military version of a Cessna 310) with Civil Air Patrol in Massachusetts. And yes I absolutely loved it that aircraft. Since you mentioned an ELT you should point out that ELT's on 121.5 are no longer monitored by satellites. They are dependent upon other aircraft reporting receiving any ELT. Great video and aircraft, I am jealous of the way you have it equipped we never had anything like that in the U-3A

I put off an autopilot upgrade for a while and now every time I fly all I think is I should have done it sooner. :) I am glad that I waited for the STEC 3100 to come out as it really is the perfect GA autopilot. Hopefully you never hear an ELT on there but if you do, go ahead and report it to ATC...you never know...could save a life.

Absolutely love your videos. Next time you're flying over Indy, give me and Mona a wing waggle..... I watch a few flight videos, mainly Steveo and Premier1 Driver (He's based here in Indy) The difference between that Premier Jet and your 310 is astounding. Both are way cool but just SO different. He blazes along at 40k+ ft at mach .76 and above most times. That jet is a time machine... Steveo has a service ceiling of I think 31k in that TBM 850 and he can get up there quick and move pretty sporty as well but you know, I LOVE watching your vids just as much. Cruising along at 175kts at 7500ft... on a gorgeous day. Man you really get to see this country. Of course, the sight INSIDE the cabin when Jamie is along ain't to shabby either LOL.... You guys rock and congrats on the new S-TEC AP. That is just awesomeness for sure....

I could really sense how happy you are with the autopilot, and how quickly you are adapting to it. The workload change is very obvious. It gave you the time to give us more information on the instruments etc. As an old fart, I like the option you have to cross check the new digital world against the old gyro and/or analog stuff. Seems like a good thing. Wish I was closer to sun and fun. Would love to shake your hand and buy you and Jaime a cold one. Will be shopping for a hat and a Tee soon.

I flew the Mooney down to Florida on Easter Saturday. A front had just cleared out the day before and it was CAVU. Climbed to 9500 it was really rough down low but smoothed at altitude. On descending to land at 5500 it was head off the ceiling moderate chop til final my wife didn’t complain at all, she’s a keeper. Fun in the wind shear zone! If you’re ever in the KMEM area give us a shout! If

Your wife is a keeper for sure! I just had a flight down to KY that was the same. At 9000 it was smooth on top. I had a 40-50 kt tailwind. When I descended below the clouds around 5300 to the ground was head off the ceiling as well. Landed on a 3200 ft rwy with a 32 knot crosswind...my wife probably wouldn't have enjoyed the last 10 min of that flight. :) I'll try to let you know if we make it that way.

It's great that you can spend time now going into more detail about the instruments and such. Good stuff! And as far as twin engines being out of sync, used to experience the same thing on my buddy's twin engine fishing boat on L. Michigan. The "throbbing" when out of sync is quite distinctive (and annoying!). Looking forward the the Sun and Fun vid! Take care!

As a former pilot (left the Air Force in 1997) I find the controller's perspective that you have interesting and would like to hear more of it. For instance, when you call out the ELT, what happens? Does that info get turned over to someone not actively working traffic, maybe a supervisor, to try and coordinate with other controllers to track down where it might be coming from? I suspect that most end up being found on an airport ramp somewhere. Kind of a humorous story, while in AF pilot training in 1986 we learn a lot of procedures and memorize what to do in various circumstances. For instance, when your radio fails while flying IFR, we memorized how to continue the flight so that ATC would know where we were going. Continue to your last clearance limit etc, etc. We had a mnemonic to learn it. I can't remember what it was, but that was something that we could be quizzed on from our instructor and check pilots. We had a controller come in and talk to us and we could ask questions. One of the students, asked what the controllers expected us to do if we went radio out during an IFR flight. He said, "We will just watch you on radar and keep everyone out of your way."

Nice one. Funny to hear the southern accent break out a little bit when talking to the Ft Worth Center controllers. :-) That a nice crab the a/p was holding on your final into ARR.

Glad you liked it James! It doesn't take long to be around a southern accent and then mine slowly creeps back in. You should hear me after being in Georgia for a week. :)

Glad you liked it John! I had a single pilot IFR flight back from KY this morning with low ceilings...man that autopilot really made it so much easier and more enjoyable. I'd like that...never been up in an RV before. :)
