I would have added stocking up on variously sized rechargeable batteries with charging stations you can plug in to your generators/power stations. Also alcohol stoves are great for stealth and indoor safety.

Very good video! One thing that is good to do is to get to know where other medical facilities are with in your system or network, in the event of a big emergency, as in my case, a few of the hospitals were closed down (damaged and evacuated) and if you had family members or yourself that needed continued care or medication to be filled you had to go to other hospitals in other towns or cities to get sorted and some elderly people needed help doing that in the weeks they were displaced and were confused about replacing all their medication and medical devices... so if you can, as you mentioned, have a list of all you medications and needs so when you need refills or lost devices you could get replacements ASAP. That includes eye ware.

Very important video. Thank you for as always, including people who live in apartments. Once a quarter, I gather all of my things, recharge everything, check the batteries, rotate everything. I watched a video about power outages in cold weather, and I've seen where they say if you have a small tent, put it up in your home because it's easier to keep warm in a smaller space, especially for sleeping. I do not live in a cold climate, but found that interesting.

Eunice, I just adore you. Great advice and great gear. I’ve had to evacuate a forest fire and ended up at a stadium camping. I had my little camper loaded with all my important things. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the governor at that time and he came to see the evacuation camp. I swear the terminator music was audible in my head. Lol. Anyhow. I keep an evacuation list handy. It starts with a grab and go 5 minute list. Then a 1/2 hour list and a few hours list. One thing to grab is your hamper of dirty clothes. Because most likely it’s all your current favorites and the things that fit. You can wash them later. Another tip I give my guests at my rv park is if they don’t have a suitcase or bag, to use other items like a big pot to throw toiletries or medications in or a trash can or a pillow case. You can easily stuff necessities in these containers and run out the door. That pot can then become a helmet. I Read that many tornado deaths are from head trauma. A few weeks ago a wild fire got dangerously close to our property. 1,200 feet away. I started loading my vehicle and the smoke had already filled the interior of my house. The air filters could not keep up. And my trips back and forth to the van were even worse. I should have been wearing a mask but I was so overwhelmed and rushing I had no time to think clearly. My lungs were congested and sore for weeks. This was a god reminder that more often it’s the smoke, not the fire, that can be a bigger problem. Being prepared before you’re smoked out is super important.

Oh my gosh! You have definitely been through the ringer! I’m so happy that you posted this to show us some great ideas to be prepared for an evacuation. I love the idea about grabbing your clothes hamper.😊 what are the things I will probably be adding to my go bag is a respirator mask. my family was evacuated from their home a couple of years ago for six weeks due to a fire and would be good to have a mask just in case to protect your lungs a little bit. I don't know how many times I have rewatched this video. I have been well prepared for years with respect to food, water, offgrid cooking, offgrid lighting, hygiene. Some other areas, such as electric power, are more growth areas for me. Especially now that my CPAP prescription has been raised. I have been investigating some of these power options in Canada, and the prices are MUCH higher than in the US (the YETI 200, for example, is more than double the US price). One thing to remember, especially for phones, is 'smart' suitcases. Keep those batteries charged all the time too. If you have to evacuate in an emergency and you are taking something like a backpack, remember to pop out that suitcase battery for extra charging capability. I found out by accident several years back that if the company has a return policy, and you buy a few of their smart suitcases to compare, intending to ship back all but one of them once you've made your decision (with the company's prior consent), they will ask you to ship them back without the battery because it is considered 'hazardous material'. So you end up with free phone charging batteries! I would never suggest doing that purposely, that would be dishonest, I had no idea that would happen, but if you remember to keep those batteries fully charged, it can provide quite a few extra days of phone service. Also, don't forget to keep old school devices that still work charged up too. I'm thinking about things like old Walkmans and portable DVD players you might have bought for travel 2 or 3 decades ago. If they still work, they can be used for entertainment during a grid down, leaving your chargers for more important tasks.

Also, COSTCO has the goal zero sat with the solar panels but I’m not sure if that’s near you as well.. also goal zero is pretty expensive brand but they are reliable. 💕😊

This is a great video! I grew up in eastern NC, so hurricanes were a regular occurrence. My parents had each family member keep a 72-hour kit by our bedroom doors at all times. They were backpacks full of emergency supplies that would last at least 72 hours. We also had extensive food storage. As an adult, I've lived in several areas of the US, but have settled in central NC. I'm an apartment dweller, and in my 7 years here I've never lost water, and have only lost power 3 times; two from car accidents that hit the poles, and one from me tripping the main breaker outside on a weekend. (oops) Hurricanes can still affect us tho, even if they rarely do. I have a 30-day food supply in a bucket, which I believe could realistically last me 2 or 3 months. I'm currently working on my water storage, and have decided to go the route of buying the jugs of water from the store. I do have "ZeroWater" 5-stage water filters and water purification tablets as well. I prefer power other than electricity in emergencies, and the butane/propane stove shown here is very similar to the one I have. I use it frequently because my apartment is all electric and I prefer cooking with gas. I forgot portable propane heaters can be used indoors, so I'm adding that to my list right now. My mentality is to not need electricity in an emergency, but seeing as you said the large battery bank can be recharged in under 8 hours using the solar panel, I'm going to add that setup to my list as well. I have lots of flashlights and batteries, but I also have plenty of stick candles for light. (and a small amount of warmth) I am grateful to come across an emergency preparedness video that doesn't have the "prepper" feel to it. Thanks!

Great video. We live in earthquake territory. We have to be prepared for no water or natural gas or electricity in a colder climate. If our home is uninhabitable, we may need temporary cold weather shelter, so a double walled tent we heat with a wood stove is ideal. Also, lots of ppl here have dogs so a go bucket or bag for them too. Battery power tools are critical and I hadn’t thought of solar chargeable set up for them - thx!

Great video! I’d add a small fire kit to each bag and bucket…my small fire kits consist of: matches, small amount of waxed jute cord for tinder if I can’t find any, a lighter with duck tape wrapped around it, and a ferro rod. The lighter with duck tape also has fish hooks & line wrapped in with the duck tape. Additionally, a small kit with trapping wire, fishing lures, etc isn’t a bad idea, as you may be away from home much longer than anticipated. It doesn’t take up much room and weighs very little for this insurance. I may have missed this, but shelter should be covered as well. That can be something as simple as a good military poncho for each person and the paracord to set it up. Cordage, cordage should definitely be included. SO, my additions are…550 paracord, a tent or poncho for each person (poncho covers rain gear AND shelter),

I liked the car camping video, and it could be used along with this idea for the scenario we had Sept 2022: Fairview fire, we had sheriffs knock on our neighborhood doors at 2 AM. We were advised to evacuate, but it wasn’t mandatory if we would have left, we would’ve had nowhere to go except a hotel or our car(s). We have 4 dogs and a cat. People who chose to leave couldn’t come back in through the police border into the community at least 2 days.

I love all your videos Eunice, but this one is the best yet. You are really speaking my language here, I spend half my life fiddling around with various emergency kits. Dammit, you are DISASTROUS for the budget, every time I watch your videos I find new things I have to buy! 🤣 I have to stick to somewhat lower tech solutions, since I do not have the income for some of these purchases (such as the power bank - would love to have one, especially for my CPAP machine, but there's no way I could afford both one of those and the electricity bill!) So if you don't mind, I'll throw in a few suggestions for those of us working with a more limited budget. One thing I do is keep all devices plugged in and charging at all times, including old portable DVD players and obsolete but still working laptops - you know, when your old laptop is so outdated that, while it still works, you can no longer download any pages online because it doesn't have the processing space. It will still work for word processing, so in a lengthy power outage, you can still use it to write. If you have those 10 year old or more DVD players, you can use that for entertainment and keep your cell phone battery for more important things. To keep cool when the AC is off, I do what we did growing up - keep the windows and curtains on the sunny side of the house closed and open on the shady side (that will change as the day progresses), put a thick towel over your pillow at night and then place a cold washcloth over your face (I did that to get to sleep every summer night growing up, we didn't have AC until I was in my late teens), soak a sun hat or baseball cap in cold water and put it on your head damp (kept me from sunstroke when helping with bringing in the hay). I also have a weird contraption that goes around your neck, sort of like an oxen collar, with two little fans at each end that blow cold water on your neck. It is run by battery, and I always keep a large battery organizer well stocked with mostly AA and AAA. A cheap fix for indoor lighting is to put a handful of dollar store solar garden lights in a jug to charge in the sunlight, then bring them indoors in the dark. I also got a bunch of small headlamps from Walmart for a dollar each, and ambient lanterns for under $5 apiece. The latter run on AAA batteries. Don't forget those dollar store glow sticks. They will provide a bit of ambient light to mark stairs and the path to the bathroom in a power outage, and provide a night light for scared kids. If you have one of those "smart" suitcases with a built in battery charger, keep it plugged in all the time so you can use it to charge your cell phone in an emergency. I would not use a power bank for things like refrigerator or microwave - it is too expensive on energy. Instead, I normally keep every corner of empty space in my freezer filled with containers of water (also, this means I don't have to find kitchen cupboard space for things like empty tupperware and Stasher bags, they are all in the freezer filled with ice.) These can be used to help keep frozen and cold food safe for longer in a power outage. If you have any outdoor cooking space, a Cobb grill or Volcano stove use only a little charcoal, far less than a traditional BBQ. Use a cast iron Dutch oven as well, and you have a combination BBQ, bake oven, and slow cooker. For indoor cooking, I keep a Barocook small pot and mug, along with fuel packets, and the much cheaper and less long lasting Steam Genie. Both use a technology similar to MRE heaters, except that they actually WORK!! (No MRE heater I have ever met will do more than bring food to a cool lukewarm temperature). The Cobb and Volcano stoves also work with small sticks, as does a cheap solo stove. After every storm, I go around the property picking up sticks and small branches that have blown down and put them in garbage cans in the garage so I can use them for camp stove fuel if needed. A more budget friendly version of the luggable loo is a simple dollar store pool noodle, slit down one side and molded around the lid of a regular 5 gallon bucket liked with a heavy garbage bag (I find the bakeries of larger grocery stores will usually give out their empty icing and muffin mix buckets for free). That Buddy heater does work well if you stay in a small room (hang blankets and quilts over doorways and windows and get everyone together in one room). Also, don't forget low tech ways to stay warm - layers of long undies, double socks, hats, neck warmers, fingerless gloves, layers of clothing. The solar oven works well if you have a lot of sun, but I have found if you have a heavily shaded property, it will not really work (easy tip: if your yard does not get enough sunlight to grow tomatoes and peppers, it won't get enough sun for the solar oven to work.) Another option can be hay box cooking. Use your grill or butane stove to bring food such as soup, stew, chili, etc. to a rolling boil for 10 minutes, then put in your hay box cooker, where it will continue to cook for up to 8 hours. You can get fancy and buy a steel thermal cooker such as a Saratoga Jack, or a cloth one like a Wonderbag, or make your own with a styrofoam or wood cooler packed with straw or old towels. Personally, I am not keen on the Wise Foods/Patriot Pantry meals - they take water and a lot of energy to cook. They also taste pretty nasty! IMHO, a better (if costlier) option is camping meals like Mountain House (the goldest of gold standard), Backpacker's Pantry, and similar. They just require a cup or two of boiling water to be added, then cook by themselves (like instant oatmeal), right inside their own bag. You can speed up the process by placing the cooking bag inside an additional foil pouch (insulated lunch bags also work well). The other thing I like about the individual camping meals is that, instead of needing to use a pot to cook in and plate to eat off, you can cook and eat in the same bag, so no dishes!! Don't forget that your stash of airplane/car travel snacks works well in a power outage too!! (A number of years ago now, a huge swath of Southern Ontario had a major ice storm the day before Christmas Eve, and hundreds of thousands of homes were without power for up to 13 days. A large Hickory Farms gift basket of shelf stable cheeses and cold cuts ended up being Christmas and New Year's dinner.) I have a 6 compartment stackable tool box with emergency items in it. Two of those boxes contain shelf stable treats for both travel and power outage situations. It is a good idea to have all your home emergency supplies together in one place where you can always find it easily. If you have something like a tote box or bag for your emergency supplies, remember to tie a small flashlight to the top so you can find things easily in the dark!! One more suggestion is to keep a just-in-case motel bag in your car at all times, with clothes, toiletries, etc. Pack as if you were staying at a hotel for a week. I always keep one in my trunk, and have used it several times, when the car broke down unexpectedly and it took a few days for the garage to get a part in, when I got sick, when I was too tired to drive home after a festival, and even when I was planning on a day trip and ended up drinking a bit too much wine to drive home safely and stayed over at a friend's place instead! And a suggestion for folks who don't do camping and don't want to spend $20 or more for camping cooking/eating supplies they might never use: I noticed last time I was at Ikea, they had a children's play cooking set for about $6, and they would work fine on a small camp stove. Toddler's bowls, plates, and cups are sold in sets of 6 for $2.99, and would be find for camping or emergency use.

I have two power stations as well. I always keep some clothes/sneakers in the car. Warm in winter and shorts in summer. A small personal care bag too with toothbrush, deodorant etc. I would love to see what is in your go bags.

Yes, pls, for 'go bag' items. A suggestion: Be sure & sign up for your county reverse emg call capability. We are p/t at our mtn cabin with forest fire threats often. Signing up for emg notifications is life saving but is helpful for your local teams that would be assisting in evac verification too.

We had a fire emergency once when I lived in Colorado. It was a reverse 911 call and they gave me 1/2 hour to get kids, pets, and stuff out. You lean really quickly what is important. In addition to some of the things you mentioned, I have an extensive first aid kit and am working on putting a pet bag together for my dogs and cats. I’m so sorry you had to experience that type of 911 call. I know things like that can be scary because that’s what we had to do with my parents.. we had about an hour to get them out of the house and get everything that they wanted into a car and drive three hours down to my house. When you’re in a panic situation like that, you tend to forget so it’s always better to have some things prepped and especially those important documents that are irreplaceable.! And yes for kids wow that is such a hard thing because if they’re too young, you have to pack for them and carry their stuff! And I always keep a collapsible, dog bowls, leash, and dog food and treats in a little Toiletries container for my dog so I can grab it and go to🦮🐕🦴

Lots of great ideas. They say global warming has turned into global boiling/burning. China is flooding, fires here in Canada, 50C in some countries and threat of a nuclear war. This year I beefed up my emergency preparedness equipment. I live in a small apartment so I don't need as much as what you have. I bought a new high quality air conditioner, air purifier, dehumidifier and recently power source backup. 45 minutes after I ordered my new power source on Amazon we had one of the worst thunderstorms in history, a tornado and a power failure. one week later after the power had come back on I ordered an extra battery and the next day the power went off again. I think this world is changing for the worse, rapidly. I tried to tell my friend to get prepared for emergencies but it goes in one ear and straight out the other side of his head.

I have gone through many power outages. Some for over a week in cold and hot weather. Those solar emergency radios and solar power chargers are worth every penny. Great video!!! I would love to see what's in your green bug out bag. I have solar kettles for boiling water & cooking. I also have solar battery chargers with rechargeable batteries. I have other solar battery rechargers that are also power banks. I also have a mini portable generator that has 4 ways to charge it. Also I have portable battery banks, solar chargers, hand crank chargers, battery operated charger, etc. USB batteries are a good thing to have too. Right now, I am saving up for a couple of bigger portable generators, a butane stove, and a solar cooler/freezer. Each member of our family can power their own personal electronics indefinitely, as well as keep clean/hydrated. Lighting & fans we have solar/hand crank/rechargeable options. Cooling towels are something else to consider. I have a few of the Scrubba laundry wash bags, travel hangers, a clothesline, a laundry rack, and a rechargeable portable dryer. Another good idea is having water jugs, funnels, and collapsible buckets to catch rain water as a back up source of water.

So glad to have come across your channel. One thing that I didn't see in the comments is how to prevent pipes from freezing in unusually cold weather, like what happened in TX a while back. If a faucet is left slightly open with dripping water, the water in motion is less likely to freeze and/or build the kind of pressure in the pipe that will cause the pipe to burst. And, yes in normal circumstance it can be a waste of water. But, if pipes do freeze and burst it will waste an enormous amount of water and cause lots of damage too.

Yes, you can leave water dripping, but it depends on how cold it gets and how much you need to let it drip because I used to live in the north east and you’d have to let it drip quite a bit. However, you can also winterize your pipes which is when I lived in Tahoe is put heat tape around your pipes, and that will keep them from freezing.😊💕

Wow you are so prepared it is impressive. My house flooded in January and I just loaded up my car with things like laptops, handbag and a few items. I didn't even grab my small go bag which basically was a bought one that was mainly first aid so not as appropriate. I had a solar luci light thing that was supposed to charge your phone too which I had tested out earlier and murphys law it wouldn't work so my phone ran out of battery and I could only charge it in the car. Luckily I saved my car. Drybags is a great idea and would love to see what you pack there. You don't always think practically at the time.

I need both prescription glasses for distance (when I'm not wearing my contacts) and reading glasses for close work/reading. I normally have my contacts in, and I am entirely capable of starting off the day with a pair of readers in my purse and one in my car, and then an hour later, asking some stranger in the store to tell me the price of something because I've managed to leave 2 or even 3 pairs of readers in the car!!! The ones with the little pouch that clips onto your key chain comes in a box of 2, and I've already managed to lose one, so it's a good thing I have several pairs!!

We went to Walmart to get them head lamps and emergency blankets and whistles. We put in snacks and emergency water and some older clothes. Each bag had a tape laminated card with my name and my husbands name. We did not have cell phones back then so we put in the grandparents’s names and hone numbers as well. We had safe words to use so they knew who they could trust. As they got older, they had pocket knives handed down from grandparents. It wasn’t much but they learned to keep track of their own stuff. 😊❤️

So I grew up in Ohio, which is also very prone to tornadoes and you learn to keep your stash in the basement in the corner so that it’s more protected and you go down in the basement as well. You can’t prepare for anything you just have to prepare for what you can.

@@TheoryofSimple You're prepared, I'm dead. I live within the blast radius of a military base and Washington, DC. I'll be vaporized in a nuclear war so I don't bother to prepare. As for catastrophic weather events, that's different. I can last a while but suppiles last only for a while depending on the severity of the foul weather event. In other words, if my supermarket got blown away, me and a zillion other people will be raiding the ones that still stand. If my pharmacy is blown away, I can only hope I have enough cardiac prescriptions to last through the event because I won't be able to renew my prescriptions until the time the script allows a renewal. I am guessing... you have enough stash to last a preconceived amount of days? Yes? I had a whole case of C-Rations when I left the military in the 60s. 10 cases of that stuff will carry me and my dog through for months. I also wonder about the civil disobedience that might go with a catastrophic weather event. What do you think? Do you kind of expect to be looted for your food and water by roving gangs? Will neighbors become enemies? There's a whole world of things to consider should a long duration catastrophe occur.

I have lived in tornado alley as well as hurricane and blizzard prone areas. I have evacuated my parents twice from Forest fire areas and now I live in an earthquake prone area.. as we see a few weeks ago New Jersey had an earthquake so no one is immune to that. As far as the apocalypse, if there were some sort of biological event… think a lot worse than Covid, then I have a garden in my backyard that I grow quite a bit of food, and I also have honeybees in my yard and neighbors who have chickens. So I would go back to bartering and doing my best to help myself and my neighbors. As far as medications, yes, they would run out and you have to do the best you can. I can’t catastrophize and worry about things that are out of my control. All I can do is control my reaction to it.😊

I did rescue during Hurricane Katrina-potable water was a huge issue. Water is life💦 Have redundant water treatment options. I recommend the Sawyer Squeeze or Mini-lightweight and small enough to carry in a pocket. As back up, Water Purification Tabs like AquaTabs. 🌿⛑️

You are absolutely correct! Having water at the ready is necessary, but also making sure that it’s portable in case you need to take some with you is also necessary! That’s why I have multiple different ways to get fresh water to drink! And keeping the water purification tablets is a great idea. I keep some of those in my go bag, so that’s why they’re not shown in this video! 😊❤️🙏

@@TheoryofSimple Having performed a number of rescue/humanitarian missions for the USAF and HSUS over the decades, potable water is often an issue. I keep two different water purification methods in my Go-Bag, my VEDC, and my home. The stress created by having no drinkable water is very real. It’s a simple fix and very affordable.💦
