I used to carry the original stove back when I was pounding the ground in the Army. Used trioxene, (or whatever the military fuel tab was), to heat up water for coffee, ramine, or whatever else whenever we would stop long enough to enjoy it. Those stoves are great, and can really take the abuse. Whole heartedly recommend them as great backup stoves. Thanks for the video. Didn't know they made so many fuel tabs.

You could mention that those stoves also make a reasonable wind break and stable pot holding surface top use most home made alcohol stoves.

This brings back memories from my days in the Royal Marines. Spent loads of time with Hexi (Hexamine) burners and mess tins . The original burners used to come with a brown wax paper around them, so that you had something to help you start the Hexi blocks. Break up the Hexi tablet by putting the whole tablet in the palm of your hand then smash on one of your bent knees! Then light one of the broken bits with your lighter/match. The Hexi tablets are coated with wax. . It is best to light the Hexi tablet on one of the broken sides. You can also place the broken pieces in the tray, hold the cooker up and light from below. Saves burning your fingers!! You can turn the cooker upside down and plant the triangular prongs into the ground, or best to keep the prongs fully open to rest your mess tin or pot on. Unless you are using one of the small metal cups/pans. Use a soldering sheet to prevent the flames scorching the grass beneath when lit. i never really liked them. They smell of fish and you need an open space to use them. Not to be used inside a tent or the fumes coming off could do you some harm . But saying the concept is good and they work well. Thanks for the memories.

I got mine today, it was made by a somewhat obscure brand that I'm having trouble finding anything about. It came with 8 tabs and a book of matches; all housed within the folded stove. I have it in a bag with 2 lighters, a wire friction saw, and a small grilling grate. All packed in a small bag. This is for my stealth camping/ bug out kit. I have a couple more things to get before I can go with absolute confidence. Thanks for the video.

I have an esbit. Stove and 2 bib fire dragon stoves the benefit of the fire dragon stove is that they will burn solid fuel tablets as well as the soft gel fuel and the stove costs around 7 dollars on Amazon but doesn’t come with fuel little more expensive but gel packs have no smell and are safer to use in a less ventilated area. Wind screen is also standard. Thank you for a good review on emergency stoves

I've got a Coghlans stove and it's great. Now I've run out of the hexamine tabs, I make solid fuel for it by melting out the wax from tea candles, filling the aluminium cup with fibreglass insulation fluff and then pouring the wax back in. I leave a tab of the fluff up as a wick. Once they get going, they burn from the whole surface of the cup. They're cheaper than hexamine tabs and burn for longer

I don't know it you actually L have used any of the stoves your talking about but I will try the last stove and see how sturdy it is...but I don't know, my esbit was run over by a friends van and still works today! A little crumpled but it works😂😂

Thanks for the good info. Have you noticed any difference in the heat output between the three hexamine tablets? Looks like they are different sizes, thus the various burn times per tablet. Always wondered if there was heat temperature difference? A test might be the time it takes to boil two cups of water over each of the individual tablets. Thanks.
@deador91926 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid. UST and Coughlans seem to have been made by the same manufacturer. I wonder, if they are made with the same gauge sheet metal. I felt that Coughlan's was a little on flimsy side. Could you comment on that? In comparison to the Coughlan's Esbit stove was rather compact and made of tougher material.

The Coghlans stove, with 24 round (9 min burn) Hexamine tablets, is currently selling in the UK for £3. Pack of 24 tablets, also £3, or, an 8 pack of the square tablets (which I prefer) can be had, from a different supplier, for £1-95.

I remember the Esbit from my Army time (Royal Danish Army, Jutland Dragoons) and i made many meals, chocolate, pine/spruce tea and coffee on that one. We had the same cooking kit at the British army as well as their PLCE (Personal load carrying equipment), although in Danish pattern (M/84). I just looked and the one i have in my closet has "Made in W. Germany" on it - West Germany! That is just how long originals last! More than three decades and a generation later and it is in a better shape and more usefull than most of the conscripts that joins the Army! I would never buy those cheap knock-off´s just for a "few" extra minutes, remember that the fuel is cheap and the stove itself is what you pay for and what last decades and decades. Saying that the cheaper ones are a better deal is up for debate, since you are basing it on the amount of minutes the fuel last and not on the stove itself.

You helped me out tremendously with my choice in non-wood camping stoves (got the Whisperlite Universal), but you don't seem to do much with the wood/twig stoves. Are you not too interested in those? I been looking at emberlit, lixada, firebox, solo, bushbox, stainless vs. titanium, etc. Are you just not much of a twig stove guy? Would love to see your opinions/reviews on some of that stuff. I need to complement my liquid fuel stove w/ a light dependable wood-burning backup. I have a solo and think it's amazing, but would like to get your opinion and real world experience reviews on some of these.

I grew up with those stoves, had them as a cadet in the ACF when I was 14, then again when I joined the Army Reserve back in 2011, I'm out now. They have switched over to Fire Dragon stoves, because the old tablets (Heximine) I think they were called, were poisonous, the residue that would be left on mess tins was a pain in the arse to clean. I remember my friends and me having our mess tins thrown into the woods by asshole Corporals, because were never cleaned enough. No matter how hard you scrub that crap does not come off properly lol

Any advise on keeping the smell of the fuel (you know what I am talking about!) from transferring to other gear in your pack or the pack itself if left stored? I have had esbit and the coglans fuel and both have that fishy smell (in fact I am pretty sure they are a fish byproduct as part of the ingredient list) and once the plastic is cut / seal broken the smell penetrates gear (even when stored in another lock n lock type container.
@jiujitsu20007 жыл бұрын
+Fricken_Doug that's an excellent question. Once I open the packaging, I put them away for trave. I put them in a ziplock bag, the ziplock bag goes inside of a cloth bag and the cloth bag rides outside of my pack

Mate hexamine is meant to be a stand alone fuel, not a fire lighter. If you want a fire lighter go to Wal-Mart or wherever. In addition most hexamine stoves aren't designed for sticks and wood. So Navy.

Dude! What?! After watching this and another video on this little Coghlan’s, I bought one to try it out. It’s GARBAGE! Thin, flimsy, unstable. Quality control is poor. Mine arrived from amazon with a broken rivet and the package has a chemical odor that smells like fish. The pellets are OK but super small and don’t last long. Sorry, bro, but there’s no way I’d want to bet my life in this in a emergency! I’d rather pack a little bigger kit like the Sterno kit or something.

Goddess1Princess True, and I’d delete my original comment, but that’d be kinda shady. I was able to easily fix the one broken rivet by removing it and bending a fence staple into the hole. The stove opens and closes fine now. Also, the fuel tabs turned out not to be so bad. My initial review was a bit harsh, in hindsight. I actually ended up buying 2 of these stoves and I keep one in my car emergency kit.

This is thje most silly babble I've heard in years. "Starts" mean absolutely nothing, and those twenty-four Coghlan's tabs are almost as good as six Esbit tabs. Have you even used this stoves in real field tests? I've used all three extensively, and the Esbit stove and tablets are worth a dozen of the other two.
@CanItAlready6 жыл бұрын
Were you even paying attention? Those tabs that he was talking about breaking into 24 pieces WERE esbit tabs. I see you all over KZbin, commenting on knife and outdoors-related videos and most of the time your comments are nothing but bile and venom. It's like you hate everything.
