Just watched/ listened to my brother’s emergency landing. He recently told me about the landing. Thank you Roddy for always having his wing on long flight. Cathy

I still remember hearing the tower log from Micron CEO Steve Appleton engine out in a Experimental Racing plane, returning to the field and not making the runway .Glad this was not the case .

I was in my office at the field that day. I heard him take off, looked away for a moment, then saw the wreckage. He was a regular, approachable, dude.

It is always good to ask for Flight Following (if available) and have a wingman on a cross country. It has saved many lives. I also carry an ACARS PLB just in case. Congratulation on a safe landing.

Chatting with emergency pilot is not a great thing to do. Let them process and focus. Only communicate absolutely necessary information.
@jcburleigh3 жыл бұрын
If you're friends, though, that kind of convo might help keep the emergency pilot calm. It's reassuring to know your buddy has your back and cares. Normally, though, you're right; short final for an engine-out is not the best time to ask "how many souls on board", for example.
@nsant Жыл бұрын
Aviate, navigate, communicate. Every pilot knows this. The pilot in distress wouldn't talk if he didn't think it was safe

@@nsant Idealistic point of view. In an emergency.... task saturation, tunnel vision, and other potential issues get very real.
@nsant Жыл бұрын
@Factory400 Emergencies like these are practiced religiously in flight training and beyond to avoid tunnel vision, task saturation, and other potential issues. My favorite training distraction is when the instructor pulls your engine, and while you're going through the checklist, he drops a pencil and asks you to get it.
@Factory400 Жыл бұрын
@@nsant Yep.... I have gone through all of that. The reality is that you don't know how you will really perform until you are in the middle of a real and life threatening situation. Lots and lots of dead pilots with excellent training.

Glad he could make it safely. What was he flying? What caused the engine to quit?
@COZYIII3 жыл бұрын
He was flying a Quikie II experimental aircraft. I’m not sure what caused the engine failure. There’s speculation about a piston ring failure or a connecting rod bolt failure.
