As we recklessly warm the planet by pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, some industrial emissions also produce particles that reflect sunshine back into space, putting a check on global warming that we're only starting to understand. Climate activist Kelly Wanser asks: Can we engineer ways to harness this effect and further reduce warming? Learn more about the promises and risks of "cloud brightening" -- and how it could help restore our climate to health.

Crazy how people just cant fathom the future if we keep going the way we are. Listen the the people that are smarter to you... thats the only thing that makes humans special haha. Like if any of these climate change doubters were born into a society with no language you would be nothing but a naked ape. Learn to embrace the gift of knowledge and realize that the tech we have today is the accumulation of all of human histories prior knowledge combined. No one can learn these things on their own and no one got where they are today without building upon everyone before them.

I guess my main question is when will they give us the information on potential hazards of this and how to prevent them? I'm mostly worried that we're gonna lace the clouds with so many chemicals and minerals that its going to be even more unsafe to drink any natural water. We have filters in place for ours, but many countries don't, and wild animals certainly don't. And what kind of effect would the chemical changes have on the plants being watered by the rain? And on the ocean and its many life forms? I like the idea, but too few words were spoken on the potential dangers of it.

I see the possibility. But I prefer to work on the cause, not symptoms. If the CO2 (or any other emitted gas) is the problem, I prefer to handle CO2. If I have a fever by virus, just suppressing the fever without handling the virus, this sounds like a short term solution for me. I really want to work on the cause and real cure. I see this is one option, but I don't see this as the final solution.Still I thank to a nice talk.

You're absolutely right ! And that's what she also thinks and says. This could be a temporary "solution" but not a real and definitive one, and we really need to work on CO2 emissions. She also says that this technique could be used only a few times so it isn't a real solution that's gonna save us all, and she doesn't want anybody to rely on this solution. At first I thought, "is this really where we are now ? Finding those kind of solutions to save ourselves while we should work on the causes ?" and was really relieved at the end of the video when she said it wasn't the miraculous solution !

Carbon is not a harmful molecule. It is the basis for all life forms on Earth. For instance, planting trees, they need more carbon dioxide because it is the very breath of the tree and all other plants on Earth. More carbon dioxide equals more vegetation. More vegetation equals more food and more oxygen. The United States right now has cleaner air and cleaner water than it as in decades. This woman is saying that we should RESEARCH marine cloud brightening so that we understand all the risks. She is urging us to learn the science (microphysics, cloud chemistry, meteorological effects, biologic and ecological consequences, etc.) so that the world will have the needed information to do an INFORMED cost-benefit analysis and decide whether or not this climate intervention is a good idea. She is not advocating to use this technology in this TED talk. She's saying that we need to invest in studying our options so we can make good choices for ourselves and future generations. If we do not collect this information, desperate policymakers in the future will likely wield these tools without any knowledge of the consequences. It is imperative that we gather data about all possible solutions right now. That data empowers us to select the best alternatives for Earth and human well-being and discard ideas that we learn are too risky. If we don't do the studies, we won't have the information to make good choices.

Changes in the albedo through clouds (the reflectivity she mentioned) does not necessarily help. Cloud themselves trap a lot more heat than co2. Increasing reflectivity reduce energy coming in, yes, but think of global warming as traffic jam, you can reduce the amount of people coming in, and it would help, but if the blockade exist still, it is still going to be jammed for a long while. She graphed 2 worlds, but she failed to mention the 3rd, one that cool through the first half of the century, and rapidly burn up in the second half. That is when the heat trapped outweigh the heat reflected. And it is one of those tipping point that literally does not turn back. Example? Venus

Jonathan Robbins in general, I think clouds are mostly over the oceans, given thats where most of the evaporation is coming from, and that is why they are 0.2 out of 0.3 of the Earth Albedo. Where they are doesnt matter as much as how much of them there are most of the time. (Exception exist only for clouds over the poles, those doesnt increase albedo significantly) In other words, where they are dont really matters, it is how much aerosols you put in and how that can affect the atmosphere.

@viktorjaakkola200

What she means is that the masked cooling (could be up to 1,1C according to her presentation) equals the experienced warming, also 1,1C. This means without the aerosol masking effect we would be 2,2 C warmer. Which is something James Hansen also concluded in his latest report Global warming in the pipeline.

Yeah sure. Now the worlds ending in 12 years? Okay bub. Another thing is just because you “learned” about something at school when you were 12 doesn’t mean it’s true or correct. The fact of the matter is the world has warming and cooling periods. Which is a fact. I remember that based on the date we concluded that yes the world warms and cools over long periods of time to much higher and lower temperatures we've seen in our lifetimes but the recent rate of change is unprecedented. Killua Yes. Or as square km, around 1.500.000. An area roughly the size of Greenland or half the USA. Then you'll need the hardware and fuel to put everything in place (and keep it there). All of this in less than 50 years. And with some technologies we don't have yet.

Divya Murugesan even if 100% of all co2 emissions stopped, the planet would continue warming for like 15 years cuz of positive feedback loops. This video details a way that could be a good way to control those feedback loops

If you look at stats from thousands of years ago, you'll see that the climate has BEEN CHANGING FOR A WHILE. Meaning it's gone up and down. It has varied. This is not news. Everyone should respect the place we all call home and do their part to help keep it healthy. But this isn't something new and urgent. The earth can take care of itself. We just do our own little share
