Greg from northern Michigan. Good choice Pete ! Had a 20 kW Generac air cooled standby gen set on our old rural house for 14 years with no problems. Racked up about 600 hours of run time. Installed a slightly larger 22 kW standby gen set unit on our new rural house four years ago, also without problem. It has about 160 hours of run time so far. And Generac is American made too in Wisconsin. Pete's a prepper, me too. Great channel !

Better choice would have been a Kohler or Briggs, you can get parts, they are far more readily available at part houses, And they make their own engines. Generac engine parts are only available via Generac. Good luck needing that one part from your local saw shop when your down n out. Dont get me wrong they sell a lot of Generators, price and marketing go along way. When’s the last time you saw any other commercial on tv other than Generac? Maybe Champion one time…another good brand for smaller home backup gens.

In eastern PA we had a 15 KW Generac which served us well for many years, it powered the house fairly well, but could not run everything at once. A couple years ago we upgraded to a 20 KW unit. Also added a second propane tank. Added an oil filter heater. Nice unit, dependable. Installer & service contractor are top notch. Also we have a John Deere 3039R cab tractor with V-snow plow, great for deep or drifted areas.

My gosh, I think you’ve left other comments about your tractor because unless someone else has a free series tractor with a V plow I think that’s so cool. That’s kind of sad to say that generators have become a must for property owners. I’m glad you’re happy with both your generators. I love to ride and Pennsylvania on an off-road you live in a great state. My father was born and raised in Pennsylvania until his parents died when he was 16 years old, then he went to serve Korean war. Thanks for posting. I’ve been trying to upgrade from a 17KW to a 24KW so it will take care of the entire house. I’ve had poor luck with Generac not being able to fill my order and I live in WI. After taking a 50% deposit a year ago I’m still waiting. Don’t forget the other small vent on the house side of the cabinet. I also dig a path around the entire unit in case you have to remove the front panel for an emergency repair.
@maraudermitchelli
@maraudermitchelli 2 жыл бұрын
John I have to check for that vent...I'm wondering if that is the intake for the engine...thank you for the tip. The generator is better protected from snow than the ac units but your comment is excellent that vent was well above the snow. That's not good that you've been waiting that long for unit and put down a deposit. I only had a 5 week wait and that was for the installers to catch up. I'm wondering if you should inquire further with the company you gave the deposit. None of my business I'm only trying to help. Thank you for supporting my channel.

A superb overview of the new 24KW Generac generator you had installed. I had one exactly like it installed last year. It replaced a 15 year old 16KW Generac generator which served me well for the more critical appliances, but the new Generac will power the whole house as well as 2 equipment buildings. And, I agree the new one is far quieter and produces much better quality AC and voltage regulation.

Great video, my friend. My wife and I have pretty much decided that when our 15 year old Trane heat pump goes out, we'll not only replace it with another Trane but install a whole house generator at the same time too. The trouble here in the NC mountains isn't usually snow but spring ice storms and the hurricanes that blow in from the Atlantic or the Gulf. My little portable 3000W Honda generator has bailed us out several times with just enough to run a space heater, coffee pot and keep the refrigerator/freezer from thawing but we know that it's only a matter of time before the next Hugo, Fran or Floyd turns a two day inconvenience into a week long nightmare.

Another KZbinr who had one of these Generac backup generators talked about a problem during cold weather. He said the air cleaner filter box would fill up with water condensate and freeze and eventually plugging up an exhaust vent in the filter box, causing oil to spray out from the dip stick tube. You definitely have seen your share of cold winters, so I was wondering if you've ever had this issue?
@maraudermitchelli
@maraudermitchelli 11 ай бұрын
Cujo I believe the problem is snow gets sucked up through the intake vents and sucked into the air box and into the combustion chamber. So I make sure the engine intake and cooling vents are cleared of snow. I have a video on this last year during the blizzard...pretty cool video. I've had no issues when the vents are cleared and my machines runs every week year round snow or rain. I hope this helps be safe, thank you

hey, my ac/ heat pump unit has a stand it sits on that bolts to the foundation of the house. this keeps the unit way above ground level. I insisted on this method for that reason of snow accumulation around the unit. its off the ground approx. 1.5 feet. I don't have to worry about shoveling it out unless snow is deeper than that height. maybe consider one of those mounts for your generator.

I have been looking at the Generac Back-up Generators -- Still debating on Generac and another Brand like Kohler or Cummings -- My question is are your fully satisfied with the Generac Brand - including the installation and service from the company and or dealer? AND does the 24KW meet all the needs you have during an outage? Thanks for a great video!

RP my first general 15kw was at my house for 18 years and now it is still working at my brother's house for 2 years...I'd say that's very good. He is thrilled with it. The 24 kw is probably 2-4 kw more than I need, as a garage is still in play at my property. It should more than handle my needs. The installation was good, some routing of wires I wish was better...but it seems to run. I'd recommend this brand as 3 of my siblings have purchased it. I hope this helps.

@@maraudermitchelli Thanks Pete! I asked because no matter what the product is today -- someone somewhere will give it a BAD review and describe a problem -- I guess there is no getting past that no matter the product. I also believe that doing the research like that on a product does help discover the good the bad and the ugly? I also believe that "vetting" the company selling the product is important and seeing if they have had complaints written up on them as far as Customer Service issues. I will be doing that with the Generac Sellers in my area where I will be building this year. Thanks again for your reply and your comments. Retired Person

Two thoughts here. First thought would be to have that generator sit up higher off the ground since you guys get so much snow. If that’s impractical maybe I take and exhaust snorkels like those safari vehicles have? Second thought there would be a steel cage, cemented down really good to prevent somebody walking off with your generator? Yes, they’re heavy but so aren’t cars and they get stolen hundreds of times each day! Great channel but people can see what you have….to steal next chance they have. I to just replaced my 2003 Generac unit with a 2022 Generac don't forget to keep that vent on back clean I have cold weather kit they do help especially on the oil it gets good shot of warm oil I only use 100% synthetic true small engine oil not car oil they don't have the zinc and phosphorus numbers required Briggs and Stratton, Amsoil and Generac all make great 5w30 synthetic the Briggs and Amsoil are 100% synthetic not sure about the Generac oil but it's designed for air cooled engines Mobil 1 and other car oils are not the ppm on zinc and phosphorus is only 700 to 800 because of emissions they are not 100% synthetic either including Mobil 1 I'm gonna put a silicone oven mat under the battery warmer I have heard them rubbing causing a short on the frame those mats are good to 400 degrees also remember valve adjustments on the engine 25 hours then every 200 hours I have a little bit smaller unit with the new 816cc with hydraulic lifters doesn't require adjustment anymore like my old one they are great units the small engine oil really helps burn off and wear big time sure is peace of mind having them love it

There's a difference between a 200A service and multiple 100A / 200A sub-panels. If you have and I lost count 300A or 400A to your home which is certainly possible in a 10,000 ft² home or larger with 4+ AC units plus a couple Tesla cars then I would look at something more in the 50 kW or even larger range. I guess it depends about how often your power goes out and for how long. Short-term outages meaning under 24 hours an air cooled generator is perfectly fine and supplying a lower kilowatt hour than your service is also fine (things will be turned off or on). As long as you understand you have to trade one device over another for priority otherwise you would have an overload. The reason I'm looking at your video and others is I'm trying to justify going from a Generac generator to a Kohler generator. Our last generator lasted 17 years and it's still running, but the stator and voltage control isn't what I would deem two thumbs up. I live in Florida and in the Sarasota area and we were lucky to have only gotten a glancing blow from Ian and we lost power for about 24 hours. Although some areas around us may not have power for days or weeks. The problem also in Florida is sometimes natural gas gets shut off for a variety of reasons or your subdivision may not offer NG. We opted for a buried 500 gallon LP tank. The reason that I even mention this is that your generator's capacity is calculated on liquid propane not natural gas, so your capacity is probably 18-19 kW, you lose at least 20% capacity on NG.

Thank you Your comment is excellent. My generator is just for short term emergency use. The longest my previous generator ran was 18 hours it was 15KW so on ngas it’s 12kw. It powered most of my house so we were careful to manage usage. Good luck with your decision it’s hard to beat these generacs.
