I used to see guys like this at my old job. Some folks like to "hold it over peoples heads" so to speak when they have knowledge others don't. I could never understand this. As an electrician I would share everything I could with the operators and mechanics, unless of course it was something that they weren't supposed to do because of a safety concern. Apart from that my theory was the more everyone knows the better! It might even save me from being called out in the middle of the night 🤞.

The first thing that told me you knew what you were doing when you talked about yout cement pad and how you let it cure for a couple of days. I've seen way too many installs where sidewalk pads were used. Kudos on the use of safety glasses. Your wiring is clean and neat. The use of the torch to soften up the PVC pipe is ingenious, a perfet fit all the time. Makes me wonder how many are saying, includung me, why didn't I think of that. One thing though, don''t sell yourself short. Your many years as a tradesman shows off in the quality of your work. I had to chuckle on your knock-out removal tools. Yep, the standard beater screwdriver and linseman pliers.

My son in law is an electrician. Tuesday night, he hooked up two large generators to the business that my daughter works at. They had to wait for these large generators to be shipped from Atlanta Georgia to just outside of Tallahassee Florida. It took them nearly all night to get them hooked up and running. My wife and I are having a house built and an standby generator installed. Guess who will be installing it. LOL.

I have been a Generac customer for 20 years. I have a 24 Kw propane fired generator with automatic switching gear. This is my 5th set up. I was in the Army and moved a lot, but always lived out. I am 73 and live on a farm in southern Ohio. I can run my house and out buildings to include my Lincoln 1500 welder off of my generator. Generac is first class and will help you with designing a system to fit your needs. A recommendation, spend the money and purchase the switching gear, it is worth the money. The systems are not cheap, but reasonable. In an emergency you do not want to bet your life on the low bidder!

Thanks! Yeah when I did this install last year no-ox was nonexistent. Same with plastic bushings, I went to 4 different supply houses and nobody had them.

@@petepetroff946 If you have some very old aluminum cable scrap that has been hanging in your backyard in the elements for a couple years, you ll see that it doesn't get corroded or change, the current aluminum alloy conductors are much superior than the ones that were used before the late 80s, back then noalox was required and the AL conductors were very reactive and get corroded super easily...I mean Noalox won't hurt, but there is no scientific proof that it does anything good to the aluminum wires we use today! I do care about quality of work, you sir have a wonderful week-end! You deserve it 💪💯

It's still required for certain Lugs and aluminum wires. Unless you're very familiar with the specific alloy of aluminum and that the Lugs are listed for aluminum you should use it. 2. Torque the lugs. 3. Is that bundled cable Insulated to 120V? Looks like low voltage irrigation wiring. Some of those are 120V lines.

Hello, remember always, always, always pull the necessary permits and have the unit inspected by the township. A friend of mine installed his own and screwed up resulting in his house burning down. The insurance company would not cover his house because the unit had not been inspected. A word to the wise, just do it. If a company installs it for you make damn sure they pull all the permits. When I installed mine, I had a professional electrician do the wiring and I performed the rest working closely with the inspectors. My unit runs perfect and has for 12 years now. No problems with the Generac unit.

I 100% percent agree, it’s not worth the risk. The permits for me were about $300 which was annoying, but a lot cheaper than rebuilding a house.

You are so right about having a trained Electrician install, and then service the unit. I had Action Electric out of Houghton Lake Michigan install our unit. When the lights go out, about a minute later the Generator fires up. That big switch kicks in. We've had a few nights when the lights went out, but the generator keeps us safe,

Sorry, but he cut the insulation of the wires far more off then needed, he did not cover the relais when he cuts the holes, he did not seal the connection pipes. This a amateur which is installing something.i would not pay for it if a electrician was doing it.

True...you don't have to worry about finding rusty metal savings in your lawn... but... you should have covered the components inside of the panel before cutting the hole... unless you're not worried about the highly conductive aluminum metal shavings floating around inside the transfer switch panel. That said... your installation, wire runs, your attention to detail etc... is a whole lot prettier and professional looking than the hack job we got after paying $12K to a Generac dealer for our generator installation. Nice job!

attention to detail in some areas and lack of in others. although the aluminum conductors are supposedly "a type of alloy or hybrid" they still contain aluminum and there is an alien metal connection. why spend hundreds or thousands of dollars only to scrimp on a tube of compound and risk losing it all (or maybe the whole house. hopefully no children).

Very detailed video. I just recently had a 24KW installed also. Still waiting on my gas hookup. I have to go the above ground propane tank route due to no gas in my neighborhood. I clicked on your video because I thought you were going to hook that tank in the background to your generator. :):) Your video really makes this look like a simple operation. Your video makes me feel like I probably could have tackled it myself but i'm glad I didn't. I can see one or two steps that I'm not familiar with would have not ended well. But thanks for the info. Electrical looked very well done. One caution for everyone watching is the distance what appears to be a small propane tank along the wall sits from the gen. Fire code calls for a certain offset of fuel source from ignition source. In this case the stand up propane is too close for code. I do note you said in a comment you had a tank installed after this video so I’m sure that was corrected. For anyone getting a generac north of the old Mason Dixon line, you need to get the cold weather options. I would suggest that with Kohler as well. Cummins starts to a lower temp without modification but if you routinely experienced below zero temps I’d recommend the cold weather options if you operate regularly below 0F. And all of you DIY folks out there need to remember you will save the money on electrician/plumber but you will have installed a 5-7 thousand dollar piece of equipment with zero warranty based upon the very specific language each and EVERY manufacturer has in their voluminous warranty document. In other words, do it yourself, void all warranty.

My neighbors Generac would not start up due to power failure, it took two weeks for technician to get out and repair it. After this incident I checked complaints on this particular generator. There is so many complaints to the Better Business Bureau, it took me almost the whole day to read all of the complaints. I myself had purchased a Honda system almost 15 years ago, has never failed, plus a Honda generator is easier to get repaired then a Generac. If anybody else has had this problem feel free to reply on my comment.

One thing I’d like to point out, I don’t know if it’s a state code or whatnot, but pvc MA’s installed outdoors should have a sealing ring for rain purposes… keeps the water out of the cans. That’s NEC code. Many areas, such as here in CO, do not allow aluminum wire from main service entrance. Certainly most jurist would not allow 240VAC in direct burial application. Just crazy what some regions allow 🤦‍♂️

@@MichaelM-to4sg This could get interesting. Copper for incoming from utility? Talk about expensive. Always aluminum here. Cost effective for utility. It used to be all direct burial coming to the homes. Now only some allow from serving utility to home to be direct burial. On remote meters, mostly mobile homes, from meter to home is customer install so they always go direct burial. Way cheaper. Sounds like the utility crews get their beer money for the weekend from the copper scraps. lol

@@scottl4124 Utility lines to service entrance is still aluminum. All wire from service entrance to sub panels and branch circuits must be Cu. I have seen some new subdivisions In BigSky that are Cu from utility but that pretty rare. The direct bury of utility lines is considered safe because those line locations are surveyed and recorded at county or city building dept. They still must be minimum 36”, some places it’s 48” deep, but there’s a record of exact location. A direct burial install for generator has not been marked and recorded by surveyor and it appears it’s buried maybe 12”. That’s a considerable safety hazard that is disallowed under NEC. A grounding rod would also be required for the transfer switch ground bus.

@@MichaelM-to4sg Max depth here is 36" most are 24" Seattle require Red Mud over secondaries. Agree on his generator power supply needs to be deeper and needing a rod. Sub feeders here are aluminum. Unless speced out like Seattle does on prevailing wage jobs. Copper is crazy priced now.

one note to all there is this magical substance called duck seal works like plumbers putty for sparks great for sealing around couplings, connecters, boxes even holes lol would have used it at the outdoor panel pvc connecter

Hi! Thank you for posting this excellent video, I really appreciate it. You do very neat and precise electrical work. I am not an electrcian but I like electronic circuits and work with them. One of the things I noticed is that when you were connecting your control wires, you left some of them with exposed conductors. You probably do not want to do that. It works, but you might not want exposed, uninsulated conductors showing.

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. Awesome, glad it was a help! Absolutely, I have used no-ox many times in the past. It used to be required by code, but with the new aluminum alloy it’s no longer required. It’s not a bad idea to use though, and if I had some I would probably use it on mine, I just didn’t feel like making a special trip to get it when it’s not going to make a difference one way or another.

Nice job on the concrete pad. Why not use pvc conduit the whole way underground? You can use 1 conduit for both the feeders and the control wires. Also, instead of using male adapters, use female adapters with metal chase nipples.

2 things : 1) As with the winter of’22 , if the temp’s gets below 50 degrees I would suggest a warming pad under the generator itself or built into the concrete ( the last thing you want is humidity/water freezing in the intake, which I’ve seen in extreme weather , manifold(s) ; 2) If you have an underground storm shelter/bunker you might consider running a direct feed line to that shelter/bunker & include a battery bank for emergency power ! When you’re not using that you could use it for emergency supplies to last you 2x’s as long as you think it will take to be rescued !

Me and the fellow I work with got some long pieces of 2" flexible liquid tite conduit with connectors off a demo job we did. We got to keep whatever we wanted, I would imagine that stuff is crazy expensive like everything else right now. But we've been using it on these generator jobs and it is awesome 👍. We just run it the whole way from the transfer switch to the generator, a two inch "whip" will easily hold 100 amp aluminum "mobile home service entrance cable" along with a multi conductor 18 gauge cable for control and it looks good, isolates vibration, and is easier and faster than hard pipe. Again it was free! When we have to start buying it things may change but I'll tell you it's the way too go as far as I'm concerned. Oh yea! good job you did here btw👍! Looks great man!

I hope you have better luck than I did. Had one installed in Jan 2021. It was up and working only for a period of 2 1/2 months in a year. Thank heavens it was under warranty. Seals replaced twice, new motor, new controller board, internal regulator changed out 3 times. Went down again 1st week in Nov after a start up for an outage and they just got back up working. I would never have purchased had I known. They keep telling me I just got a lemon but keep trying to fix it. At least if it goes down again, I get a new one.

Thx for the video. You mentioned that 18/10 sprinkler wire was used for the control wiring between the generator and the transfer switch. Most sprinkler wire is rated for 30 Volts (e.g., Southwire's 18/10 sprinkler wire). If 30 Volt sprinkler wire was used, this is a safety hazard. Outputs N1, N2, and T1 from the transfer switch are both have a nominal voltage of 120 VAC to ground. Sprinkler wire was used to to carry the voltage of those three 120 VAC control wires. Therefore, this installation is not in accordance with the UL listing of the sprinkler cable (e.g., UL 83) nor is it in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC), which is formally known as NFPA 70 (e.g., NEC Article 300.3(C)).

Thanks for clarifying that, yes the sprinkler cable I used is rated for 150 volts. You definitely don’t want the 30 volts rated cable.

when ever you use aluminum wire on steel or copper you should use corrosion cream like anti seize for automotive brakes but it's to stop corrosion on electrical wiring in residental and industrial electrical panels. aluminum has a habit of turning I should have said white corrosion with has a resistive value that causes heat at the contacts points as all resistors do to disapate the current load like a hydraulic pipe under pressure creates heat. Even steel being forces throught a hole to small with cause heat from being forced where it's not wanting to go (Resistance) I have worked with electronic resistors for many years and understand what resistance is. You can fine the same corrosion on a intake manifold on a Car engine when you use steel bolts in the aluminum heads and could cause the same problems with electrical contacts on a engines ground contacts.

Sir 1. Never hook-up your Generator with aluminum wire . Always use copper. Generec wants copper. 2. Here is how you size your Generator. You said you have a 24KW = 24000 Watts / 240 Volt = 100 Amp's x 1.25% (Because it runs more then 3 Hrs, continuously). Total Amp size 125 Amp = #1 THHN x 3 1- # 6 Green THHN ground wire and USE # 14 THHN for control wire (easy to get and 600 volt rated so you can use the same conduit) less work. 3. Use (1) 1 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC from ATS to Generator. ( Sized perfectly for everything and 1 1/2" L-B into the Generator. 4. You can not bury NM Ceil Tight Fittings in the ground 5. Always use Deox on aluminum wire! (A generator is a 4 wire feeder and must be rated by NEC @ 100%. No derating your wire, like your home 3-wire up to 400 Amps service entrance conductors can. =Aluminum wire is Okay for that. Wire to use is 4/0 URD very popular for 200 Amps services 5. I also added a comment about this and you are absolutely correct, but you can use #2 XHHW suitable for direct burial. The unit can only put out 125 amp at maximum demand so no need to over size the wire unless the distance to be ran will cause a voltage drop then you size the wire accordingly as per NEC to the OCD ( over current protective device, breaker or fuse. Depending on the demand of the home 100 amps may or may not be able to run everything in the home all at once like the homes panel. A load calculation will need to be done to see what you can and cannot run at the same time when on that generator. Overloading the generator can severely damage the generator and or cause other issues. You can safely match your feeder size wire going to feed your panel but that is spending more money than you need to and not necessary. It's a safe alterative for sizing the wire if you are not sure how to determine your demand, but that is also providing the connection points in the generator and ATS ( the termination lugs in the equipment), are rated for the wire you intend to use. He did not use inhibitor which is also a requirement when running aluminum wire at the termination points. I also agree with you on the control wire of the same insulation voltage rating however I do not as a practice combine feeders and control wires in the same raceway, Not a good practice for later issues, ( trouble shooting or replacing that multiconductor) should an issue ever arise. A simple rule of thumb, all electrical fittings, wire, and equipment is approved for the purpose by UL. (Underwriter Laboratories) It is usually stamped for it's approved use for a reason, to be safe from potential electrical and fire hazards, if it's not don't use it. Be safe, yet that's why we have Electricians! 43 years as an Electrician and still going strong. Good comment to point out requirements though.

I always use my lineman's for a hammer haven't carried a hammer on my pouch in years. Just make sure that you always hammer on the fixed side of your linemen's and not side that pivots. Otherwise they'll tend to get a little stiff and not open as easy. My large Klein screwdriver always makes for a good punch or chisel and it's easy to keep sharpened on a bench grinder.
