As the war is edging closer to the border of my home country and evacuation is a near-future possibility, I find myself mostly thinking how to get my two cats out by myself and take them with me to safety. I know this is not the sort of emergency this video talked about, but nevertheless I am thankful that somebody is talking about how to get the pets you can't just put on a leash and go out and safe. My cats are my life, heart and soul. There is NOTHING in this world I wouldn't do for them. I also volunteer foster for my local shelter, going on 10 years now. I would just die if I had to leave behind my fur babies, just like the rest of us. However, it is SO not fair to judge others who are experiencing a weather crisis of any kind. Hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, can happen so damn quickly, there may really be no time to get everyone and everything out like we want or plan to. Those people we see in the news are every bit as heart broken as any of us would be. Just some food for thought.

I had to evacuate suddenly this summer. There was a fire that broke out in apartment above me. Things I learned: 1. Fire alarms scared the cats and they hid under the bed. Difficult to pull them out. 2. Cat carriers were in closet by front door. Very good 3. I couldn't carry both 20lb cats in their carriers AND grab anything else but my phone. Neighbor helped, but what if? 4. Many hotels charge 20.00 to 25.00 per pet per night over regular rates. 5. Cats get so stressed from new surroundings. One of mine had to go to urgent care for severe vomiting in one evening. 6. Cats can turn on each other in New surroundings. Mine had to have anti anxiety meds for a time. 7. Having familiar food, dishes, and litter box is a must! 8. Having pet supplies stored somewhere OTHER THAN HOME would be very helpful.

I hav3 been thinking about this lately cuz I live in So Cal and I have a Go Bag for me. A couple weeks after I adopted my cat I got a mass text with warning about potential evacuations. It was then I realized I didn’t have a Go Bag for her. Now I do. Thanks for this post so I can be ready for her. I’ve evacuated before. Being prepared really helps.

I crawled back into an overturned mobile home to get my dog, who ran back in bc they were terrified of the tornado that happened to be tearing up the house next to us. Hell or high water, my pets are coming with me. Period. Thanks for the preparedness tips 👍

I'm lakota, my kitty NEVER gets left behind! I live in a apartment 7floor. I have everything I need to make sure my baby comes with me. I keep track where he sleeps so if I go he goes too! I keep an emergency bag near the door for him. I have a backpack for my kitty designed for him. Fire, flood I'm ready!! I love him more than me.

Another thing almost every animal shelter in an emergency situation will either help with vetting it if needed for free or very low cost or can send you somewhere that can. They understand you don't have the funds in these cases. But, please if they do go back afterwards and either volunteer or donate back to them or better yet do both.

We evacuated hurricane Florence with with our kitten and two dogs. No fur babies left behind! I will always take my babies! Thank you for the video. I picked up meds before the hurricane hit and we left home for two weeks. We drove for 8 hours to family. We were lucky our house was okay when we came home.

A good way to get cats used to the carrier is to get a larger one and just leave it out with the door open. Put a towel/blanket in there and one on top. My cats sleep in or on top of their carrier all the time. When it's time to go to the vet or somewhere else, getting them in is no problem, it has their scent, and the two cats keep each other calm, so they're not howling the entire trip.

I'm personally wishing I knew what to do in other emergencies. A couple examples - a family member lost a cat last year, pretty sure it happened quickly, but we weren't sure of that at the time. I called up an emergency vet line, who walked us through CPR, but that was a few extra minutes of late response I wouldn't want to relive. Also - a couple months ago, we had a lot of smoke. It turned out to be a clogged fireplace from someone living on the lower floor. It was scary enough that I bought one of those emergency ladders. The ladder says on it to specifically NOT carry a pet with you... but fat chance, right? I figure, if it's a split-second decision, I would need to grab my cat, bundle her up in a blanket, and head down. Unfortunately she is prone to hiding in response to the fire alarm. I know JG would say to try to eliminate those hiding places, and I intend to as soon as it's feasible for my living situation. For now I just plan to open window, throw out rope ladder, hope it works as intended, grab treats, lure cat, grab her and go. But I can't exactly run a fire drill with that plan--that would be reckless. Not sure what else to do though.

My cat Mouse has a microchip implant in his shoulder. He’s had it since he was a kitten and since I adopted him in December 2019 (the people at the humane society put the chip in). So if my boy ever gets lost or in case of an emergency, the shelters would know who he belongs to.

Last summer I had a fire approaching my house in Spain. Very scary. I prepared everything because it looked like we could be evacuated in the middle of the night. My 2 cats don’t love the carrier, but were used to getting inside as I used to feed them breakfast inside. That was helpful because even though they would get stressed afterwards, at least I knew I could get them inside the carrier and take them with me. Also, I prepared a bag with all their things and arranged our possible stay at a friend’s house, and then I went to ‘sleep’. Eventually we didn’t have to evacuate.... I think most people don’t plan on leaving their animal behind, but if there’s an emergency, you need to have everything a little prepared or who knows what might happen....

The info in the video is helpful but its for emergency's you know about ahead of time and you have time to gather stuff as you leave. It would be nice if you do one for incase of fire or loss of power during a northern winter. I feed my cat in her carrier every day so when the fire alarm goes off I just toss some food in and after she gets in I close her in. So I've got that covered but I wonder if there is anything else I should do

Hi Jackson! Do you have any tips for fire alarms? Had an impromptu drill last night and I could only find one of my two cats before my neighbor pulled me out of my apartment. My cats were fine and there was no fire but I realized I HAVE to train them. Any tips?

Jackson galaxy is right you don't know how you'd react in an emergency. My house went on fire on Wednesday , my first thought was put out the fire then as l saw the smoke moving up the stairs l went into a state of panic my cats were upstairs so l ran up trying to find them but l couldn't even see , l saw one grabbed her ran down the stairs out the back door .Hubby came down with the two other ones . But seriously you don't have much time to save them because in thick black smoke its drawing the oxygen out of you.The worst thing is cats hide when there is smoke and its usually where its hard to get them. I know what l did was stupid but l love my cats.

You're an amazing human being. I don't see ANYONE ELSE talking this extensively about hurricane victims and their pets and the plan to evacuate. You should be on national news talking about this. It's literally a crisis. Come on people, these are your family members. I saw a picture of 2 dogs in a boat watching their owners float away and leave them during the hurricane in Houston. My partner and i live in a high rise apartment building. the first thing we ever talked about in the apartment is making sure the cats carriers are easy to grab and our cats know the minute we grab them and put them on the floor they run over and climb in. we trained that into them so if there is ever a fire or emergency they will climb right in and feel safe. Both of my cats are also chipped and are always updated. my cats are my children and i am always concerned with their safety before my own.

seibervideo basic boiled chicken breast is a great treat. Or just try out a lot of treats from the pet store. There's also freeze dried meat in pet stores, on of our cats loves them!

Not sure if I missed it in the video, but make sure you PACK VACCINATION RECORDS in zip lock bag, even pet friendly shelters here in Florida will not allow pets in without that documentation

I live in Houston and just went through Harvey. I had no idea what to do or what to have so I put EVERYTHING I knew he would need. Toys, wet food, harness, medical records, chip information, water. I live in California and with the fires going on at the moment, how they've just been escalating each year, and the large earthquakes that happened in Southern California as well, I've been more and more anxious about how I would evacuate and care for my cat in the event of a disaster. I'm really grateful I came across such an informative video geared specifically toward evacuating cats. It's definitely a totally different game than doing so with dogs. I will be sharing this and hopefully getting this information out to more people. I already have his carrier out and ready to start acclimating him to it, which will help alleviate a lot of my stress. He hates traveling and every time he is in his carrier he pees just from being scared. Your advice on this alone was a huge help. I hope no one leaves their pet behind but just as it's happening in Texas, I fear it will. All I know for sure is that when I was renting the ground floor of a house & the tenants upstairs set the place on fire; I got my son out then my cats. The firemen were livid that I wouldn't leave because one cat was missing. I kicked one of them when he tried to drag me out. As soon as I found her, I left peacefully & quickly.

Pat Phillips in my town the fire department gives out stickers to put on our window alerting them that there are pets in the house I think all across the country and around the world all fire company's should do the same thing. Billie

Billie Kiser That is an amazing idea. It's brilliant & simple which is probably why it won't become commonplace. It remains up to us, as loving pet owners, to find some sort of sticker or sign to put in our door/window to alert firefighters that they are inside. For me, the biggest confusion was that the cat was named Jessica & the guy couldn't wrap his head around whether I was looking for a person or a cat. Just because she wasn't named Toodles or some such.

We had a similar situation once where we were living in the bottom apartment of a duplex and the lady upstairs set her apartment on fire. Our first priority was to get our cats out before making sure we were out ourselves. Barely had time to grab both cat carriers. So, my spouse grabbed our older cat, took her outside, and confined her to our car. Then, I grabbed the one cat carrier I had time to get and had fun chasing our younger one in circles till i caught her as the fire alarms freaked her out. Got them both out in time and thankfully right before the fire department got there. Found out later that if one of the panes of the two pane-window in the kitchen upstairs had of busted, we'd have had a flash over that would've made so none of us wouldn't have got out. So, we got reprimanded by the fire-fighters due to that. But, I told them that as dangerous as that was, I'd rather give my cat a chance to get out by me getting her, instead of her freaking out and ran in circles till she passed, and put myself in danger before forgetting about her and saving myself. If I'd have been harmed our killed due to that, I'd not have regretted it. That shut them up as they were floored on my stance due to that. xD But, I'm just glad no one got harmed that day and that the fire upstairs smothered itself out. My younger cat still freaks out if a fire alarm goes off to this day if we're cooking. But, that's to be expected and I always reassure her that everything is okay.

Hello Jackson, we live in Mexico City and just experienced last night the strongest earthquake in 30 years. Schatz behaved so great. Even we were really afraid, she cooperated waking up us to let us know about the danger. Unfortunately for this kind of situations we can't have the emergency kit you advised, anyway we'll do our best to have her essentials with us (you can't take so many things during 30 seconds and run for your life). I recommend buying a crate for medium sized dogs that way the kitty has more room to move around. I bought one for when I had to take my kitty on a 3.5 hour road trip and wanted her to be as comfortable as possible. I also took the small carrier for easy transport outside the car. Of course this is if you can spare the space in your car.

Smaller carriers tend to be safer and more convenient in a lot of ways. Generally the carrier should be big enough for the cat to get up, turn around, and lie down, so discomfort shouldn't be an issue. Smaller carriers mean the cat won't jostle around so much if the car is rocking or has to come to a sudden stop, which can reduce stress and injury. It's also easier for moving between locations quickly, less car space (and more space for other essentials), and can be up to code if you need to fly or take a train or tram. Some cats also prefer being in the tight little den, away from all the bad stuff. Larger carriers I only recommend for situations that allow/require it, like the cats that will not enter the appropriately sized ones easily and you have the space.

Use the small carrier to move them around and strap the big crate to the roof of your car with most of their supplies in it. Not the most important stuff though. The bigger crates are great because you can put all they need in with them, even their small den carriers and litter boxes, with no need to open it up where they could get loose.

I keep my kitties cat carriers in easily accessible locations. Inside each carrier, I have a waterproof bag with a manilla envelope inside with copies of important documents, spare house and car key, spare cash, etc. Leash and harness (my cats are well trained with a harness) spare cat food, antibiotics, first aid kit, etc. And in my car are blankets, bottled water, and a small bag of litter and trays for each kitty. In the event of emergency I cannot leave them behind!!

This is so important... I just have a horrible experience ... not directly but it hurts as if it was about my own cats. She had to evacuate from Florida today with her 3 cats, they stopped at a Gas station, the 3 cats were inside the car out of their carrier :(. One of them got out of the car, freaked out and got missed under a sewer and now he is lost. I am in Colombia, and I usually help with cats in many ways but this situation is kind of frustrating for me. That won’t be happening if she could see your video before. I already cried like a baby for a long time, I know them since they were kittens. I gave her a lot of tools to find her cat but they didn’t work. They had to leave the cat and keep driving. She is completely heart broken and so I am. They left all their phone numbers and directions at that town but OMG this is a nightmare. WE DO HAVE TO BE CAREFUL … thank u Jackson for this video. ohhh nooo I am so sorry about it. I was, and am so shocked that when I saw this video a realized how important is to, for real listen and see it before it happens something really bad as what happened to my friend. They haven't found the cat yet :( this is so sad. They are in Washington and Mel the cat is somewhere in Clermont Fl. People there are trying to find him but the weather conditions are so bad :( . I will update u, ones they find it. I really hope it happens

Thanks Jackson. A great need to know. Just wanted to add that a week's worth of food is not enough if you have to stay put and then find yourself in the cleanup because you have to go one the belief that no one's coming. You need to be self sufficient. Thanks for all you do!!

THANK YOU JACKSON well said!! I evacuated EARLY from fire. Having personal list helped sooo much. PRACTICE evac. This means you have your essential stuff in one or two places max. I expected to be panicking so list is : Cat litter +tray, food water + bowls. CAT . My meds. Going early is great because once we got to Red Cross shelter I knew we were safe, and could relax. Evacuees were so kind and encouraging to each other.

I live in Tornado Alley. For a tornado you don't leave, you hide in the basement. I have a litter box and litter down there, ready to set up for if the storm is aiming for us but not yet close. And I have carriers down there for when a tornado is on the ground near us and we need to hide in the closet under the stairs. (We've only had to hide in the closet twice in the 25 years I've lived here.) I also get blizzards so I keep 1-2 weeks of human and cat food on hand all winter.

I love JG! I'm in TN and it's amazing that even we are going to have tropical storm force winds from the hurricane. The pressure system from Harvey also impacted us. I have chronic pain and they've had me under the bed from the increased pain. It's like how someone with an old injury or arthritis has pain in their joints from bad weather, but for me the pressure system causes widespread body aches like I have a bad flu. I slept for 16 hours from just fatigue after not sleeping for days from pain. My Bombay cat, Arwen, was curled up beside me most of the time. She's the best companion a girl could have; I could never imagine leaving her. I'm moving to California in a year or two and will be taking her. Still researching to see if flying or a cross country thing would be better for her, poor thing. Taking care of your pets during emergencies is part of what you take on when you become a pet guardian. That and taking them to the vet and feeding them are all on the same level of necessity. It deeply disturbs me when people seem surprised that it's expected. Pets aren't just snuggles and playtime, but also bills and responsibility. If you don't do it, it's most likely no one will. The buck stops with you, so be a person and do the right thing.

praying for you guys!! my hometown (corpus christi) and my husbands (rockport) were hit 2 weeks ago by hurricane harvey in texas pretty badly at a cat. 4 💔 my babygirl mittens went with us down south to edinburg of course! 🐱 STAY SAFE

After the earthquake here in AK I was out the door with my cat and called my mom in OK. First thing she asked was if I brought her, second was if I brought her food and water. But definitely I needed to bring her collar. So many lost animals after that.

My old cat named Toonses (from old TV show where cat drove a car) got out and became pregnant. People found her and gave her a free feal bath Thye realized when they came to find me that I was new to the area. I lost 1 cat for a time and gained 8 kittens.

I was in the Sonoma County fires and my brother woke me up at 2 am and I was so scared for my pets because my dad wouldn't let me take them. I saw a side of him I never saw before, and to be honest, he scared me. My house and pets are fine though. I made him promise he will never leave them again because of all the cats in the shelter that never were picked up.
