Even if you dont have a huge sheet of plastic, you can use Reynolds wrap, ziploc bags, plastic bag like shopping bags, or plastic bottles, cut the bottom off and poke hole in cap, wrap coffee filter or fabric around the cap side, then fill sand, gravel, then bigger pebbles after an that's a filter, theres always a way to do it, you can use a bucket as well, doesnt have to be a hole in ground, just gotta use whatever is around you at the time best you can an substitute things best your ability.

If those leaves aren't poisonous, you can even overlap them like shingles toward the collection point (which, itself, could be leaves &/or carved-out wood &/or a conveniently shaped rock Etc.).

Another way to get water: wrap a sealed plastic bag around a living, leafy branch, and leave it for several hours. The leaves photosynthesizing give off a small amount of water that will collect as droplets, and you can shake the bag to get the water to one corner to drink. Obviously, it is only about a Dixie cups worth, but if you can find a bunch of littered bags, it takes little energy to set up many. I have tried this in our backyard, but am no expert and don’t know if water from every plant is safe to drink.

the resin from a conifer tree or you can perform pyrolysis on wood and then condense the overhead gas products into oil and then build a refinery to manufacture the plastic. but without a freshwater source you would be dead before you achieved those things.

Nice video. It would be helpful to line the bottom of your hole with plastic before you add the plants and seawater/urine. It doesn't have to be clear plastic at the bottom of your still but clear is needed at the top.

That took 24 hrs to get. Humans need almost 2L of water per day. 250 ml gives you an eighth what you need. Sitting in the shade and not doing much will decrease how much you need, but if you're going to use a still like that, you should really set up more than one.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't it have been better to place the whole bucket of salt water inside the still, off to one side? By tipping it in, a lot of the water would have just soaked away.
@dam6.6
@dam6.6 9 жыл бұрын
I barely learned of this method for acquiring water but what you mentioned does make a whole lot of sense. I think it would be ideal to use some of the transparent plastic sheet as a cover for the basin to retain water. that way the hole can keep it's parabolic shape in order to efficiently expose as much of the water to the sun's rays.
@jenniferandoh5342
@jenniferandoh5342 6 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong too lol. But tipping the water all over the leaves surrounds the leaves in water that is saltier (has a higher solute concentration) than the water inside in leaves. Therefore, the fresh water in the leaves diffuses out of the leaves by osmosis, down a concentration gradient, so you harvest more water from the leaves than you would if the leaves were not surrounded by salt water. Therefore, more fresh water evaporates and drips into the bucket.

+blitz krieg really? you would actually drink your own straight pee, before filtering it this way? some people recommend, a sheet at the bottom as well, to prevent the urine from soaking into the ground, also i don't think the leaves are necessary, because they will just absorb the urine. I think, dig a hole, plastic sheet down, pee in the hole, set cup in, cover with plastic. this would probably recover with i would say an 80% efficiency. Then you wouldn't be wasting your pee.
