Summer 1944. In France, D-Day marked the end of dark times. Aspiring to a better future, the French rolled up their sleeves and set out about rebuilding the country. But in post-war France, hopes and reality would yet collide.
In the aftermath of WWII, a new social order emerged in France with the establishment of a welfare state. These days were the ones of economic growth, the baby-boom, industrial modernization, social security and the Americanization of lifestyles… But the balance was precarious, and new social, economic and political conflicts soon resurrected a murky past thought to be over.
From the Liberation of Paris to the Évian Accords signing Algeria’s independence, via major social crisis of 1947, Abbé Pierre’s appeal against poverty, the rise of modern comfort or the OAS attacks, this documentary paints a vast picture of a country torn between unity and division. Featuring scenes from the people’s daily lives thanks to unique, colorized archives, it accurately traces France’s collective memory.

This is the France that my late father knew very well as a GI in June 1944, when his unit (segregated) was shipped from Southampton, England, to Normandy. A little more than 2 years later, he would be honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in Paris and go on to work in Germany as a civilian employee of the U.S. government for 3 years.

My father was in Guards Armoured Div, 2nd Grenadiers. He saw one young woman who had been too friendly to the Germans. The locals dragged her to have her head shaved, she resisted furiously, so a noose was put round her neck and she struggled until she was strangled to death. There was no mercy shown to collaborators.

My father left New York on a ship July 2 1944. Arriving in Glasgow Scotland and then troop trains down to England for 6 weeks and then sailed across the English Channel to France in late August or early September. He was then assigned to the third army under Patton. Made it back home in November of 1945 and discharged in El Paso Texas on December 7 1945. Thanks for the post. I enjoy reading about other peoples fathers during that time.

Same here. Clearly remember being able to eat a whole Mars bar in one day for the first time in 1954! A Belgian friend of mine now in his 80’s distinctly remembered British troops walking up the street of his home town in 1944. Interestingly a few years later he went on a school trip to London from Belgian and was told not to flaunt his sweets in front of British children who were still subjected to rationing….

Yes, Britain was broke at the end of the war and had sold many of her foreign assets to buy weapons. There is a video here on YT called: "Britain and the USA, 1945-46" that describes Maynard Keynes' adventures in the US after the war, trying to borrow $7 Billion for basic necessities, he got $3.75.

In America, we didn't suffer with the bombing of our cities or the infrastructure. In fact the standard of living actually increased during the war! What France and England were experiencing with new technology in their kitchens America already had. Most Americans had electricity and indoor plumbing in their homes by 1932 and by 1952 the number was even greater. While some people criticize consumerism it does mean the average person has more products to choose from and capitalism allows for greater investment in businesses that provide the goods consumers want. I personally don't like Coke A Cola, but many people do, it's a matter of taste and I'm not going to stop others from drinking what they want.

Communism was just an illusionary ideology for a temporary purpose in the global Agenda. All modern philosophies are rooted on humanism, merchandising, capitalism and atheism. And are based on self-interest, lust and pride ; the main control tools of the wicked one for the unreached people still living in the flesh. Without the Spirit of God changing them internally, humans act just as wicked animals. Since the natural mind of the human being cannot perceive the reality & identity of sin.

I'm a dual French-Belgian citizen who lives a 20-minute drive to the German border (where the Battle of the Bulge took place), and my wife is from Normandy. We know what we owe Uncle Sam 80 years ago. This also is the kind of documentary that makes us realize how privileged we are to live in modern day Europe, which is certainly not a perfect world, but which has achieved at least one important, probably the most important goal, peace. Nations that have for centuries fought each other, to the point of almost destroying each other, now live as peaceful and friendly neighbors to the point that a war between them is simply unthinkable. We regularly go to the German side of the border and we love it. The exception unfortunately being what is now going on in Ukraine, but let's hope they'll be able to join us in the future.

What still baffles me is that, after this France went to brutal wars of imperialism in Indochina, Algeria and Cameroon. The saddest part is that France still headed by this very general Charles Degoule killed men who helped him to liberate Paris in those wars. With thier only problem being that, they demanded independence after ww2.

After the second world war, the process of decolonization is underway all over the world and in 15 years all these countries will have gained their independence. In many countries the process is carried out in a very conflictual and violent way due to the influence of the cold war. In 1945, Russia and China saw the interest of gaining influence by helping countries to achieve independence and establish regimes close to the communist camp. The option of an accession to independence in a peaceful manner and everywhere sabotaged by action, on the one hand by communist countries and on the other hand by a reactionary minority fringe within European governments.

The repressive and ultra exploitation of Haiti after it got its independence in the 1800s speaks volumes about the French attitude towards the black race/nations. Yellow race in indochina and arabs in north Africa never got colonial tax after independence but black nations are still during that tax to this day. The CFA franc union forces them to bank their forex in France and borrow their own money when they need capital for projects. Absolutely sick, disgusting and abhorrent mindset.

And they were given a zone of occupation they didn't deserve at all in Germany, they went absolutely insane, they lived like pachas at the expense of the Germans who, looking at them were starving to death. The abuse was so outrageous the first government led by Jean de Lattre de Tassigny was replaced after a few months by a military government who also had to be replaced after a few months. Monsters. And after being liberated, the first thing they did is go back to occupy Vietnam.

@@remipersonne1375 Some individuals yes but the French army was defeated in six weeks and disarmed, remember? In London, de Gaulle spoke on the radio a lot, but he never led an army into battle, so no, the French army didn't win any war, they were only given 'favors' at the end of the war and an occupation zone because Churchill, fearing the Americans would soon leave Europe to go fight Japan, didn't want to be alone to oppose the Soviets in Germany, Britain was totally broke anyway. At first, Stalin strongly opposed giving anything to the French, the Americans had their doubts but in the end, Churchill got his way. Unfortunately, as soon as the French moved in, led by the outrageous Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, the troubles began: the castle life, the looting, the starvation, the total disrespect for all laws and their arrogant refusal to collaborate with the other occupation teams and later their begging for US help and their return to occupy Indochina made a lot of people wonder if they had lost their minds, me included.

The entire country France was recruited by Washington DC to go fight in Indochina. "The astonishing outcome of the war in Europe (edit: WW2) had turned the United States into the patron and protector of the European empires." - John Darwin, After Temurlane GEOPOLITICAL ANALYSIS "Astonishing" is the incorrect word. It is "divide and rule". It is how the strategy works. A power gets others to divide systems and to fight its wars and implement division *for the greater power* which enjoys a natural geopositional advantage by funding these crises/wars. Preferably without the "buck catchers" (concept of the proxy) ever finding out about their role in the strategy. An example here is getting France to fight the new declared enemy of communism (per Truman Doctrine), in Indochina as "buck passing". Get the weakened empires (by WW2), to further weaken themselves, and become more embedded in the post-war order, and advance US interests, and contribute to war profiteering which is skimmed off in the background.

Agriculture solved labor problems and labor shortages. Problems with people where massive. Feeding people very difficult. Never changes in any war. All the same from the Bible. People can be persuaded so easy. Being lead into the unknown , in daily living. Shoot or be shot. How does a person do what is right to save his own life. I can plant a fruit tree. And take care of it. Only God will provide me fruit at harvest time. When I sleep or walk away for the day. God takes over. Two items we are given at birth from God. The air we breath and gravity. We can not see these two items but we feel them. Grab that air with your hands. Grab that gravity with your hands. God is in our lives. But the devil is always on our backs. Stirring up problems. That get out of hand. God wants mankind to think and not act out of hatred , the devil controlling your mind. Rebuilding the French society , is a full time job. Every day. The world is a gigantic attraction fairground crowded by carnies. People are ready to pay their ticket for a carousel ride. And the merry-go-round is never attractive enough. It makes them spin around while playing loud music. Once their turn is finished, it drops them out all staggering at the same place where they embarked. And time has passed, while taking away all their illusions. Most people don't understand the spiritual truth behind this ; because they cannot see that everything that shines under the sun is temporary. They are focused on the material aspects of life by not being able to perceive the invisible realm. They still live in spiritual darkness that is the condition of the human nature inherited from the fall, that is focused on selfishness, lust & pride.

Most of our history is too narrow, and can only serve as data to figure out the big picture. After around 1900, Europe lost its top tier position as global leaders because their leaders could not find a suitable balance of power between the states, which was equally acceptable for all. Note that with Versailles and many other bad choices, ALL Europeans lost. WW1 and WW2 was one struggle which roots go back a 1,000 years: the battle for continental supremacy and a balance of power between France and The Holy Roman Empire, with Russia off to one side of that, and Great Britain off to the other. This is how the quote "peace for 20 years" (Foch) should be interpreted. WW1 and WW2 was simply another "30 years war" with the difference being that the naval powers (GB and the USA) stepped in and supported France as the "favored nation" as a proactive divide-and-rule strategy of intended global control and domination (see footnote). In the end ALL Europeans lost and became subjected to the American Century, whose post-WW2 Truman Doctrine was simply more divide-and-rule, to drive a rift between Europeans. After the Cold War this "rift" was simply "ruled" to be further east, and the desirable status quo of "Europeans set up against each other per outside ruling" was moved a few hundred miles eastwards. The new "Iron Curtain" will soon be declared, under some or other fancy term, to divide the eternal "good guys" and the new "bad guys"... Read Mackinder (1904), which found its logical continuation with the post-WW2 Truman Doctrine, and Churchill's Iron Curtain. ------------- Footnote: My sincere thanks to a fellow youtuber (@realvipul) who thought my one of essays explaining the divide-and-rule/conquer strategy of power was "TLDR" or too complicated and therefore ran it through AI... "The comment discusses the concept of "divide and rule" as a strategy employed by powerful entities to maintain control. It argues that human systems are inherently chaotic due to the complexity of human nature, making them susceptible to manipulation through division. The example of the Roman Empire's conquest of Britain around the year "0" is used to illustrate how this strategy works, emphasizing that the motivations of individual collaborators are less important than the overall effect of division in enabling the empire's dominance. The comment then extends this analysis to the American Century, suggesting that the same strategy was used to exert influence over Europe. It highlights that the goal is to create maximum division among opposing groups while maintaining unity within the ruling power. The comment criticizes the media and political leaders for perpetuating a cycle of lies and wars, often under the guise of opposing territorial expansion while simultaneously promoting systemic expansion. In essence, the comment argues that the "divide and rule" strategy is a fundamental tactic employed by powerful entities to maintain control, and that understanding this strategy is crucial for comprehending historical events and current geopolitical dynamics." It's divide-and-rule/conquer. Europeans once grew into North America using this technique, morphed into "USA" and then gained North American hegemony using this technique, morphed into the American Century and gained global hegemony using this technique, and are now using the divide-and-rule technique as desperate attempt to hang on to global hegemony...

France and Great Britain were allies during the two world wars, and declared war on Germany with their own motives. The reality is that much of these two conflicts took place on French soil. The thousands of French soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Dunkirk did not do so to help Britain but simply because it was their duty to continue the war against the common enemy. We celebrate each year, with respect, the fallen allied soldiers on the ground of France, for these two conflicts, and neither of the two nations has to boast a higher price of blood.

You were not "helping France", you were saving the free world and also protecting yourselves because they would have come for you and your empire.

You are also forgetting that we the United States saved Britain especially from starvation and supplied them. Little thanks did we get. Britain had the audacity to call us yanks after all that we did for them.

Don't the French ever get tired of depending on Americans? Europe is still depending on America to defend it. After 70 years don't you want to take some pride in your men taking care of their own country? Don't think for a minute that American citizens don't talk about this. Maybe because it's our sons you need to protect you ,not your sons.

A good documentary about the post-war latrine, but it failed to give due emphasis to the expulsion of American troops from French territory. The reason: rapes of French women and teenagers. Another thing that was missing here was the racist French colonial violence in Algeria and Vietnam.

Of course you did😂😂😂 Only an American would think that . While both the US and Canada played a vital role in the war, there were others involved also. So, if anything, thanks for the help.

Whether you liked them or not, most Free French remnant of the Army outside the country and in the SOE were not commies but almost all the resistance forces inside the country, the FFI, were communists. When it's war it's sacred union. Only fighting the foreign ennemy matters.
