This song is the reason I decided to play piano. 33 years later I’m still playing. I’ll never be as good as Keith, not even close, but it’s given me a lifetime of enjoyment

@@thomassanchez-oo6sb you are so right!!! And of all the covers I've seen of ELP she is spot on with Keith, not to mention Gregs lead guitar on Karn Evil Nine, flute battle with T. VanLeer from Focus, lead guitar with Dweezel Zappa, and the Chapman stick!!! Anybody else who reads this comment really needs to check her out, she will not disappoint. Have a great day thomassanchez.

had the vinyl LP and, after a while, it got so "clicky" and "poppy" during the quiet passages, that I knew, after a time, why CD/digital was a better idea...what a debut album...!

A classic ELP tune! I especially love how Keith strums the piano like a guitar in the first couple verses.

I know it's Jana's first listen, and I absolutely love her reaction and analysis (as usual). But I also really appreciated Nathan's reaction. I got the feeling that he hadn't REALLY listened to this in a while, and several times throughout the song, he was looking like, "wow, this is really awesome." I can relate, because often when listening to ELP (or anyone else) that I'm already very familiar with, I don't always pay really close attention. So, when I have a chance to really listen closely, it's like damn, I almost forgot how great this is!

That is an accurate statement- sometimes it has been a while for me when we listen to these songs, or I've only heard them recently in the background while doing other things. It is one of the secret benefits of doing this show - I get to really sit down and take the music in with no distractions and it is causing me to re-discover all of these hidden treasures!

When they did Take A Pebble in concert they changed the middle part up. 1st was Emerson playing Tank in the middle then as time went on it evolved to others things.

I don’t comment much but think could see you tearing up a bit at Keith’s piano. I burst into tears too. I saw them live as a 17 yr old in Glasgow Scotland just before they hit the big time in Japan and the US. Stood right in front of Greg wearing that hippy shirt. Right in front like two feet away. They were Superb all 3 but Keith’s playing always makes me cry. Try Trilogy.maybe u have I’m new here. I bought Tarkus so new and incredible. Years later Greg had a tiny page online. Section called ‘were you here’ I answered and he SAID he remembered every gig they did and me. He emailed me again. We didn’t know how to save stuff in those days. What a trio. Innovative, extremely talented and very exciting to a 17 yr old then! Keith jumping over the organ attacking it with knives! Good bless all 3 they changed me. And opened my experience to classical music. You young guys must keep experiences like mine alive for the future but especially the music.

Always loved ELP, and TAPebb is one of my faves. I lived the release of this album in realtime. Yeah I'm that old. I have one of the original vinyl pressings. The record store had it stamped "DEMO." Sadly we have only the P of ELP still walking among us.

ELP - My favorite album is Brain SWalad Surgery. Their 1st self titled album is my 2nd favorite and you just heard one of my favorite songs. There are a few of ELP's songs that you need to do live. - Rondo - is one. - Knife Edge 2nd version - is the only one where you get to see the original 1968 Moog before it got bigger. - The remastered version of Karn Evil 9 1st impression part 2 from the California Jam - has a great drum solo on an iconic 2 and a half ton steel drum kit - (Google Carl Palmer's drum kit & KZbin video)

The fact that you are listening to this music that is the way above most other people's heads, is great. ELP was way ahead of other bands, and you don't hear anything like it today, as it was a blend of Rock and Classical music. Congrats on being advanced in your knowledge, taste, and appreciation of music. You need to watch their Live performance of PIRATES at the Montreal Stadium 1971, with their small orchestra that traveled with them on tour. FYI: All, Emerson, Lake, and Plamer, played in Jazz Bands, and were influenced by Jazz and Classical Music. They were also the first band, to be called a "Super Band," selling out 200,000 and 300,000 people filled stadiums.

I've often wondered if the acoustic guitar bit was the inspiration for the "Discovery" section of "2112". And yeah, Keith Emerson was an incredibly innovative player and composer. He's widely regarded as one of the best -- if not THE best -- keyboard player not just in progressive rock music but in rock music period. He introduced a wider harmonic palette -- with ideas borrowed from classical and jazz -- than most keyboard players of the early 70's were using. Other ELP should include both "Trilogy" and "The Endless Enigma" from the Trilogy album. All of "Karn Evil 9", of course. If you really want to be bold you could tackle all of "Pictures at an Exhibition", although you might need to break that into parts for poor Jana!

Loved this album when it came out, though this wasn't my favorite song. Now I think it's brilliant. Instrumental interludes in this remind me of Renaissance. John Tout can hold his own with Keith Emerson.

Fun fact. Harpsichord/waterfall like sounds are Keith strumming the grand piano strings from inside the piano. To my ears this song is almost the ELP equivalent of Moon Child from the first King Crimson album. Moon Child is a real "musical break" Both are light, airy, and contemplative. "Unplugged" might be another descriptor. Head bangers might say "boring". Glad Jana is not a head banger. Keith's compositional skills were otherworldly and transcended genres.

Hard to say...some would consider Transatlantic's The Whirlwind to be one long song clocking in at near 80 minutes...also The Flower Kings 'Garden of Dreams' is close to 60 minutes...MEI by Echolyn is another at 49 minutes...for more traditional Prog I'd have to go with Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull...

When listening to this in a vehicle you must have a compressor in your cd player or everything played on Greg’s acoustic guitar won’t be audible. He gets very quiet on his Gibson J-200.
