My ELPowell box set is my daily listening. Amazing!!! Cozy made perhaps the major step of his remarkable career when he joined the genius of Keith and Greg. To quote Neil Murray, "the stuff he played with ELP was much more difficult, not that bash bash bash, and Cozy relished that challenge". That's what makes Cozy a much better drummer than Palmer: this was a huge challenge for him, a great step forward. I only wish they lasted longer.

You've already demonstrated your love for the band ELP. I would like you to ask me for some songs to practice and perform here on KZbin. You choose the songs. Preferably, the songs that Cozy Powell played, with good audio quality, even if they are from Carl Palmer's time on drums.

@@CozyPowell4ever hehe!!! I admire and respect him for all he has done in the past. His early drumming in ELP and in the first Asia records is amazing, but he declined over the years. He relished more on his solos. Today, I don't like him; I saw several videos of his current ELP tour and no way, I don't like him, is pure noise and he wants to show, at 74, he can play as fast as he did when he was younger. Cozy was much much better (I knew Cozy long before I knew Carl Palmer), and he demonstrated he was up to any task when he joined ELP. If you listen to him playing the old ELP stuff (VERY difficult), he is amazing. Many die-hard ELP fans told me the same. IMHO, Carl Palmer is 1970-77 (77 live because his side on Works I is, to me, the weakest), and Asia (mostly Asia and Alpha, he sounds very powerful). He was terrific. He was pretty good when I saw ELP here in Argentina in 93-97, but didn't impressed me. Besides, I didn't like when Carl Palmer said it was "petty" to bring Cozy to ELP when everybody know Keith and Greg called him first, and he was unavailable due to his commitments with Asia. Very distasteful and disgusting.

@@CozyPowell4ever I should say Pirates, Karn Evil 9, Knife Edge, Lucky Man, the epic Fanfare for the Common Man, From The Beginning, Tarkus, Pictures At An Exhibition, basically the ones in the recent CDs. I would have loved to listen to Cozy playing Hoedown, with the toying between keys and drums which in Trilogy is a masterpiece (that's Keith and Carl). They are very difficult pieces

Great that you recorded this (or somebody did). This is one of the hot gigs that Cozy Powell rated 9.5 out of 10 in his 1986 tour diary. He said it would have been a 10 if he didn’t screw up a couple of drum parts near the end of the show. He didn’t specify what jam, but I assume it might be the encore Medley. I saw them and taped their show on Halloween night, just a week after this gig. They were incredible! Expectations were that it would be like ELP-lite.. or maybe kind of like Asia; which is cool, but not like ELP prior. As it turned out , they were INTENSE, and their show setup was akin to those 80’s metal concerts, with a neat futuristic stage and Amps hidden behind large tetrahedrons that each member had behind him. They were VERY loud. Yet ultra clean sounding. We sat in the 11th Row just off to Lake’s left and we’re totally blown away. It wasn’t lite at all. It was ELP with extra calories and alcohol stuffed in for good measure. One of my favorite concert experiences ever, and I have watched and even played in a lot of shows, myself. We expected them to perform their whole new album, pretty much, with a few old ELP songs for maybe a 75 minute set or so, like Asia and their 60 minute-ish pay per view set in Japan. I’m saving this and will listen to it when I have time. Thanks for posting it. Question: if you were there at this show , was it just my friend and I or were they particularly loud- like 105 decibels at minimum? We sat right near a wall of speakers, so it may have just been where we sat: They sure rocked, didn’t they?! Too bad it wasn’t a more highly successful tour, money wise: I’d have seen them every time they came around.
