E.L.P. found a way to sound just as awesome live, as they did in the studio. Carl Palmer sure showcased his massive talents at the drums, and of course as usual, together with Keith and Greg, they all worked seamlessly together to create the coherent blending of sound and genres that these three brilliant artists made their signature style. I remember seeing them at the California Jam in Ontario, CA, in April, 1974, when I was soon to be out of high school, embarking upon 'adult' life. These guys were the stand-outs, and were absolutely amazing that day. Magical. Nothing like listening to live music under the Southern California sky. It's practically a religious experience. Can't beat it, even with the smog of the foothills as the backdrop and being sardined among tens of thousands of hot, sweaty, stoned-out-of-their-mind bodies, in temperatures that hovered around 85 F, with no shade. Still, what an experience!!

Bittersweet to watch this for so many reasons. Within the space of a year they went from commanding the most awe-inspiring assemblage of musicality in the history of rock music, to rushing through their greatest hits in order to pay down their debt. And of course, two of them are now gone. Keith was right; they shouldn't have waited so long to produce new music. Still, the music is there. Let's hope Carl Palmer keeps banging away for a good long while. Saw him earlier this year, and he hasn't lost a beat.

I saw ELP in 1970, 72, 74 and 92 here in the UK and the Nice in 68 and 69, it's a shame a full concert wasn't videotaped of the band without the Orchestra because the guys were so together musically then. All the concerts I saw are still fresh in my mind from all those years ago and I'm now 68 years old, best band I ever saw and there's not been anything like there music again. I saw Carl's new band a couple of times, but couldn't get my head round ELP music being played without keyboards, but was a pleasure to meet Carl who in my mind is still one of the greatest drummers. RIP Keith and Greg, sadly missed.

Lovely! I saw ELP on both the 1977 and 1978 tours and have so many fond memories of those tours. Sadly, none of the recordings did the shows any justice though I like the sound on this video a lot...everything seems mixed nicely with a bit of ambience which the live recordings seem to lack. It's wonderful to see how much the band enjoyed playing those songs. Tiger In The Spotlight always seemed like a throwaway to me but it's clear that the band, especially Emerson really enjoyed playing the song live. Same with Show Me The Way To Go Home. They were such an interesting band...no one would have complained if they kept making albums like the first four but instead they did Works I and Works II which yielded a lot of great music. Thanks again for posting this. It really made my morning!

Have to disagree. By ‘78 ELP’s best days were in the rear view mirror. The recording of Aquatarkus at the Anaheim Convention center on wbmfttstne is the pinnacle of their achievements. In 1978 the mantle was taken over by UK, the Dixie Dregs and the Bill Brufotd band
@anonymusum3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasrichmond2413 What are you talking about? Compositionwise there was no prog band that was more advanced than ELP. From the keyboard perspective there was no keyboardist who came even close to Keith. UK made a totally different kind of music, Bruford´s band was more like a jazz/rock-fusion and Dixie Dregs was a guitar driven band - so no comparison possible. It´s always the same with pure music listeners: put a label on something and forget that especially in music there are way too many variants to do so. But for young, upcoming keyboardists ELP was and in many cases still is the role model and not those bands you mentioned.

I think they needed to show off there skills more. For instance the drummer could have attached the drum kit to himself while attempting a 200 foot high wire crossing while doing a paradiddle. Also Emerson could have been submerged in a tank of crude oil while belting out an arpeggio with one arm tied behind his back.

MMM . It was round about this time that my favorite band ELP started to blow it. I got into an argument with Greg about them turning their backs on the UK after 74 and Greg said it was the other way round, because of punk and new wave. My argument was punk/New wave didn't come along until 76 and ELP had already dumped us by then in favour of North America.
@Fexobs5 жыл бұрын
Good point, and if you think that they also missed the UK out entirely in 1973, it is a crying shame really. I think it was probably more to do with management decisions, and interestingly, King Crimson similarly gave the UK the hump at this time. To think that some snotty little Punks scared them off is bizarre though. It didn't stop Yes and Genesis going from strength to strength. Not a single European `Works' era gig was not cool.
@tarbuck15 жыл бұрын
You're quite right, and I did point out to Greg that even in 74, they only played 3 venues in the UK (London, Stoke and Liverpool), which is pathetic.
