FOLLOW/ LISTEN to Emerson, Lake & Palmer: bio.to/ELP
Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

One day in 1974 after school in 10th grade we went to my buddies house, his parents were out of town. He told us we gotta listen to this ELP album his older brother has. We smoked a bunch of bong hits and he put this song on full blast on an awsome pioneer stereo system. We were blown away, good times we had growing up in the 70's. Too bad for young people the last 35+ years listening to the same old recycled rap, hip hop, pop slop.

I had Brain Salad Surgery back in the days of side one - side two LP records. Without a doubt, this album presented the ultimate challenge of flipping the record over as quickly as possible to try for no break in the transition from Part 1 to Part 2. What an absolute gas was Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

Saw them only two times, First time was for Works Vol 1 tour, circa 1978; Second time was for their "reunion tour" in the early 90s (that time was ripe for LSD;-). Both shows were amazing. The first time, Journey was the opener and had just released "Wheel in the Sky"* and did a very good show. I remember thinking 'ELP's gonna have to really raise the bar to out do that'. Well, the Stadium went black, a lone spot-light hit the middle of the stage, and the three of them, standing on a round platform, facing their respective instruments, arose in the middle of the stage. When it reached flush, they calmly walked to their places. *Bar raised* (lol) before playing a note. LOL Only then, did they begin to ROCK THE HOUSE! (Seattle) Second time, no opening act. Just ELP for, I think, 2.5 hours. Not sure cuz i was "trippin' balls". I coulda listened to more. Afterwards, my friend and I just just wandered around Downtown Omaha, in NO condition to drive. AMAZING show!!!!!!!!!!! *Journey's only album that I have any use for.

Thank you. I had "lost touch" with ELP a while back and so didn't know how time has treated them in the intervening years. I have since caught up. I was floored when I read about Emerson's suicide. He wasn't letting his fans, or anyone really, down. These things happen (nerve damage) and we will always cherish what he gave us. It's sad he couldn't see that. And then Lake, shortly after, with cancer(?)I think. Also sad. To both of these giants: RIP. @@tsitracommunications2884
