Still the BEST live act I ever saw (and I've seen hundreds). At 16, I saw them at the Oakland Coliseum in the late 70's and they blew my mind. Palmer's drum kit rotated and, if memory serves me, flipped upside down! So sad to have lost two members of this iconic trio. ELP forever!

I've listened to various drum solos by different masters from rock, jazz, whatever, over a pretty long period of time (60s - 2000s) and the only drummer that can do a 5 minute drum solo and keep people gazing at what's happening, in my opinion, is Carl Palmer. so many of their songs push at pretty high tempos, and he rattles off 32nd notes like they were nothing. MAYBE he wasn't as versatile as a drummer like Neil Pert from Rush, who had to play to so many types of music considering all the styles they played, but I haven't ever seen a person play THAT form of rock, which is rock/classical fusion and make it smack you in the face like Carl did, and I haven't seen a person play any faster. But more than anything else, that drum solo he perfected over his years in ELP is simply awesome. It's a drum song. In an interview he talks about the voice of the drums, just like a singer. Carl, you had a GREAT voice and best to you always for enriching the lives of those who enjoyed your playing.

Carl Palmer waved to us we were that close Scott Muni, Alison Steel. My row passed a Doobie down like during one of their hits I took two good drags and it was almost the end of the concert I think it was Karen Evil. Could of been the middle. Pot was great back then. 😅
@citadelbarker61069 жыл бұрын
My sister watched this concert in Dallas. The sound was in a variation of quad, but had even more channels because she said the sound would move around the room, so I imagine they had 6 channels for the sound, which at that time was unheard of. At the end of this song, when the synth is going and keeps getting faster, you see in the video the cheapo visual with these silver wings coming out of the robot and the lights flashing. She told me that in the stadium, the sound effect made it feel like the building was taking off, and the explosion hit you so hard that people were stunned by it. I don't think they could really duplicate that at this concert, since it was outdoors, but MAN! It would have been awesome to see that live.

That custom kit was all engraved by hand with exquisite hunting scenes on each drum. At one point this drum kit was in the Smithsonian Institute because it truly was a piece of art. 🎉I saw them on the big screen when "Picture's at an Exhibition" was shown as a full length movie. Then in 1977 They did "The Works Tour" with a 80 .piece orchestra. That show was in Milwaukee and we were one of the first stops. I was in the 10th row, They did it all including Karn Evil 9 I mean it was one for the ages. With The Conductor rising from the floor to start the show with "Fanfare for the Common Man" to Keith's on his piano doing somersaults to Carl Palmer's incredible drum solo on Karn Evil 9 with a hydraulic stage equipped with strobe lights underneath. All this while Carl was rotating 360 degrees with 2 mallets light on fire. Top 5 concert of all time. Also, By the time the tour hit Chicago with the 10th show, They had to cancel The Orchestra. It was just to expensive to do the tour that way.
