"Lake is a powerful singer." You have no idea HOW powerful until you get to The Endless Enigma. I'm thrilled that you're doing this whole album because not only is it their absolute best and a crowning achievement in music but Karn Evil 9 will absolutely slay you. I was already a huge ELP fan before Brain Salad Surgery arrived but this was SO amazing that it changed my entire life. I flew 6,000 miles each way to see it performed live and it took my breath away. When you get done with Karn Evil 9 and the weeks have gone by, just know there is at least one more incredible masterpiece from them waiting to be discovered. And it has the greatest vocal Greg Lake ever performed.

My favorite part of "Benny the Bouncer" is the upright piano Keith is playing, with the intentionally out of tune keys to give the song a honky tonk atmosphere. He did this previously for "Azrael Revisited" from The Nice Album.

Same here. Terrific piano playing. My own favourite example of Keith in full honky-tonk style is the "Barrelhouse Shakedown" from the Works II album. That's just sublime. 😀

If you liked "Still You Turn Me On", check out the clip from the 1974 California Jam. Just Greg and his 12-string, no bass or wah-wah, or keys of any kind, but it's amazing to watch him riffle through perfect arpeggios on finger-twisting chords on a frickin' 12-string, singing along, chomping on a wad of gum, making it all look so easy. He was ostensibly the bassist and vocalist, but he was fantastic on guitar as well. And as you note, one of the finest voices in all of Rock and Roll...

To me, these are not just "songs" to listen to if you are in the mood. It is theater, to let your imagination take you places. The varying instrumentation and themes are so colorful; that's why I love ELP's music so much.
@robertjewell97273 жыл бұрын
ELP does have a variety of "genres" they like to show off their versatility with, Benny being one, which is an English setting using turn of the century ragtime form. It's way retro-atmospheric and a blast like a meteor landing on your house while you're reading a book of poems. Listen to Scott Joplin or the soundtrack to the movie The Sting, really popular when this album came out and ELP was probably trying to score some points with that popularity. For me it works because Brain Salad Surgery has a certain SciFi quality to it and seems to travel to different time periods. Still You Turn Me On is the ultimate high school let me see if I can seduce you car song of the '70s at least for the artsy teen get-together (the bangers would pick Van Halen and the really lacking imagination crowd would choose Styx), Still You Turn Me On definitely has an unbelievably palpable sense of heartfelt longing to it while it asks its questions.

I love the reference to Red Dead Redemption for "Benny the Bouncer". So spot on. It's so evocative of possible problems in the UK in the '50's. Ted's were Teddie Boys, so named because they wore Edwardian drape coats and crepe soled shoes. The type that Elvis sings about in "Blue Suede Shoes". The opposing gang were Greasers as they drove motorbikes. (A British version of Hells Angels). Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" is a similarly themed song.

I think that with "silly" little songs like "Benny the Bouncer." It showed a light hearted side of them and gave Greg Lake the chance to show off his vocal prowess. He could sing beautifully on the love songs and then sing down and dirty on a song like Benny. It also gave Keith Emerson a chance to have some fun with the honky tonk sound.

They sometimes put a goofy lighthearted tune on their albums -- there's also "Are You Ready, Eddy?" on _Tarkus_ and "The Sheriff" on _Trilogy._ You should probably start checking out The Nice now, Keith's dry run for ELP. Their biggest flaw was the lack of a strong vocalist (even Keith himself sang a couple tunes), so maybe the instrumental "Rondo" would be a good place to start.

PS I'm positive that's Greg Lake singing with a cockney accent on Benny. Also, you'll find that Keith had a love for ragtime piano music and would find a way to fit something in on almost every album (there's even a cameo by Alexander's ragtime band on KE9 as one of the lost wonders of the world). It's a bit of much needed comic relief and levity to their otherwise bombastic music. It's a very British thing as most Americans don't appreciate that type of humour. Probably why Zappa didn't get as much airplay in the States compared to other countries.

Trust me, these two songs are a breather before you get to the real meat of the album, which is quite a glorious rollercoaster. I'm sure I'm not the first in these comments to tell you that "brain salad surgery" is a very arcane slang for giving head. In fact, the working title for the album when they were recording it was "Whip Some Skull On Yer". And of course, there is the thinly veiled penis head poised beneath the lips on the album cover. Such intellectuals! And the term "brain salad surgery" first appeared (to my knowledge) on Dr. John's song "Right Place, Wrong Time". You might want to check out his album "Gris Gris". Serious voodoo stuff. Anyway, SO looking forward to your initial experience with "Karn Evil 9".

Good vocals, lyrically, that bit, sadder, madder, ladder... ouch. Then there's BTB, I've a real soft spot for this piece of musical fun. It's ELP, meets Chas & Dave (non Brits, look them up), it barrels along with some great piano playing. A real, and unexpected gem.

"Benny the Bouncer" is one of those songs that show ELP love having fun with music in addition to writing progressive rock workouts. You'll find similar tunes on Tarkus and Trilogy. Emerson's honky tonk piano and Palmer's rhythm are the highlights on this song. "Still...You Turn Me On" has a great arrangement. I wish ELP had performed Greg's songs live as a band instead of putting them in Greg's solo spot.

The acoustic guitar sounds at first like a straightforward arpeggio sequence but it's actually very intricate; I say this because there's a video of a young Greg Lake playing this live and he doesn't appear to miss a note while singing, no band behind him. Incredible. Prepare yourself for Karn Evil 9, it's a journey for sure. I loved this album another one I wore out the grooves.

Justin, you mention spaces in songs a lot. The spaces in "Still" allow the song to breathe and let the listener feel the emotions and catch up to Lake's gorgeous vocals. The other deejays at the radio station I worked at used to make fun of me for liking a song about a person who wants to go be with their dead lover. I guess that's one interpretation, but I think it's a beautiful ballad. He could sing "la la la la" and it would be just as pretty. After this album, try "C'est LA Vie" for another powerful Greg Lake vocal. Have fun with "Karn"!

Hi Justin. Really enjoying your videos on this album. I think after the first three more intense and serious songs that "Benny" was meant as a kind of sonic "Palate Cleanser" to refresh your ears before "Karn Evil 9". I think that's why it's so intentionally silly. It's just fun, not meant to be taken seriously. This might make more sense when you hear "Karn Evil 9" it's an epic song much like for example Rush's "2112". Both are long epics with a sci fi story line. I think you'll be impressed with "Karn Evil 9". It's one of ELP's greatest tracks.

"Benny the Bouncer" is a neat little distraction before the massive undertaking that is Karn Evil 9. Lots of British humor (Teddy boys, "an 'atchet," half a quid, etc.) mixed with that honky-tonk feel. I adore it, but it's kind of a space-filler song. BTW, that's definitely Greg Lake singing. I dunno where you're seeing Carl Palmer as the vocalist, but that's not correct. The closest comparison I can think of right now is Greg's vocal on "Are You Ready, Eddy?" on _Tarkus._

I'm a keyboard player and I love Benny the Bouncer but opinion seems to be divided on it. Whether or not it "fits" on the album depends on what people want an album to be. Personally, I like variety and Brain Salad Surgery is my favourite ELP album precisely because they excel in so many styles. From Karn Evil 9 - their finest prog masterpiece - through the tasteful AOR of Still...You Turn Me On to the old-time, slapstick comedy of Benny The Bouncer, it's a marvellous, multifaceted musical experience. As far as reviewing Karn Evil 9 is concerned, I think you'd be better to break it into at least two parts. It's a truly epic piece and I think it would be a real struggle to articulate a coherent reaction to it in one sitting. It would certainly be impossible to listen to it all AND comment meaningfully afterwards in less than half an hour. I would recommend that you review the first movement and then proceed to the rest of the piece while that's still reasonably fresh in your mind.releases Incidentally, with the mp3 and CD releases it's now possible to listen to the whole of the first impression in one sitting. Back in the days of vinyl, we had to turn the record over halfway through it!

Agree “Benny” isn’t my fav style, but Keith plays amazing piano (as usual), and this reminds me of Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon”, or Jim Croce “Bad Leroy Brown”, with the bar fight theme. I do like Scott Joplin and have played some ragtime piano - it’s kinda hard since I’m a guitarist, not really a pianist, but it is a fun style to play. And “You Turn Me On” is simply beautiful.

Before listening to Karn Evil 9, you should note that the shorter 8 min FM version was from about the 5:30 mark to the 13 min mark. The rest was only heard by people, like myself, who bought the album when it came out.

@JustJP When you do the review of Trilogy, the first 3 songs must be listened as one piece: The Endless Enigma (Part 1), Fugue and The Endless Enigma (Part 2)

Now we wait for ELP's masterpiece, Karn Evil 9. I was only 15 when this came out. I was transfixed, especially by 1st and 3rd Impressions. I was pulled into ELP after listening to Trilogy which I consider their best work overall.

Listening to Benny the bouncer after all these years it doesn't remind me of Gunsmoke, it reminds me of peaky blinders
