I interpret this song as her definitely wanting this relationship, but the guy is not into it. This is their last time together, and she wishes that this time together would continue forever. The burning of the cornfields ( done by farmers to clear the old stalks away) and the smell and sight of it will be a sense memory of this moment for the rest of her life that will always remind her of being together with this person who she laments “will never be mine”.

Your wallpaper shouts 50 Words For Snow! Great songs from a wonderful album. The latter appeared mysteriously on the live album Before The Dawn. It was never executed on the liveshows, but recorded during the rehearsels. And what a great idea that was. The live version is even more beautiful than the original. On the original the Trio Bulgarka appear and on the live version they are covered really beautifully by the backing singers. And Kate really opens up emotionally.

This collection of songs exemplify relationships of all kinds in such a poetic way that only Kate can manage. Her choice of lyrics, sound, tempo, and instrument are so on point in each song, it shows a real maturity and creativity in her power to convey a message and a story. She is such a treasure. The first time I heard her was The Kick Inside album. I remember thinking, who sings about incest?? WTF??? Keep in mind, that was a long time ago. I have been hooked on her music ever since. Keep it rolling with her tunes, brother. For someone who isn't a huge star (in the tmz kind of way), , she defiantly shines the brightest.

Thanks for this double feature of Kate Bush Justin. You have to wonder whether these 2 songs are about her relationship with Del Palmer who played bass on a lot of her songs particularly on Hounds of Love and The Dreaming . Apparently they had that kind of relationship that was very deep but also tumultuous. They also had a very strong creative bond in the studio. Where Angels fear to tread is an old saying which fits the exact meaning of the song. What happens between a Man and a Woman is so deep and sacred and invisible to other people's eyes nobody should dare to intrude upon lightly. Precisely where Angels fear to tread. Never Be Mine is one of my favourite Kate songs ever. I always imagine the bass as weeping with regret while the piano seeks to comfort. . That's from me again as I tend to go on a bit. Just want to say you've been very generous with your output in recent days Justin. It's greatly appreciated.

Well analyzed, I was thinking the same thing, how dense the 1st song is and how more open the 2nd one is. The vocals on 'Between a Man and a Woman' hearken back to "The Dreaming" album. 'Never Be Mine' I like more, love the way her voice drops down when she sings the title line. There's a fatality to it looking into the future.

Good review as always, Justin. I suspect these two songs are about Kate's relationship with Del Palmer, which ended between this album and the next. There are at least two songs on The Red Shoes which are more overtly about this event, which was a big deal for Kate as they had been together since she was 16, so half her life at this point. Still, even after their relationship ended they carried on working together. Looking forward to the next two, the two best songs on the album IMO.

Nice analysis. You always do a thoughtful job interpreting Kate's stuff. In the end, it's Simply Kate, right? Have you dipped into Aerial yet? That one seems ripe for you to go through track by track, as disc 2 is another concept, like The Ninth Wave. Aerial is right up there with Hounds of Love and The Dreaming for me. I urge to to react to it if you haven't already listened to it.

Between a Man and a Woman, didn't grab me at first....then I listened to what is going on with the backing vocals, and I was blown away. Throughout this album, she created these vocal tapestries, almost every track has these remarkable, stacked voices in the background, esp. With the Bulgarka singers, featured again in Never be Mine, those voices blending with the strings and ullian pipes....goosebumps.

You sure listen to a whole bunch of Kate Bush. Like this one but most to be honest I take off after the first 30 secs. I love the variation you do Justin, it is whats kept me here in my Oolong mornings if you will. I know I have been a pain in the arse with all my suggestions, but I am guessing many others are as well. I do however, have a special suggestion today. My Father died last night back in America and I only heard of it from my Sister who put a post on Facebook about the situation. Now, I have not had any sort of relationship with him since I was in my early 20's and his passing is really not why I write this but it is the sadness I am feeling that we had never been able to rekindle any sort of relationship since those days. I am now 57 and so you see it has been a long time. I have only a few really good memories of him and one was when he sat on my bed and would listen to a few songs from a new album I just got from my Bday or that I bought. He was a young adult at the explosion of the British invasion in the 60's and I used to sit and listen to all kinds of music perched on the top step as to not interrupt the joy I saw him have while experiencing HIS music. So I am getting long winded here, but one of those groups he loved was Three Dog Night and the song that HE loved is very appripox for this day. YOu see He died alone, he lived alone and spent over a decade as an old man in prison and well... This would mean a lot to me if you see the time to listen to this song.... One, by Three Dog Night.

Simply Kate in the way I think of it is how the chordal choices match her yearning verses voiced. She sees the words and applies the music to express them in a way that makes the emotional matter both simply expressed but spiritually complex as it's evoked. How she does this is such a part of her mystery, the tonal sounds such a part of her evocation of understanding and confusion. It feels real.

So there was me thinking the high pitch tones your voice frequently delves into, which gives me much amusement I have to say, were a unique tribute to La Bush...but no, it's down to you not wearing pants...right...*eyebrow raised*... swiftly moving on, great review again mate, becoming a bit of cliche writing that but respectfully that is the case...Never be Mine, I think has such a subtle beauty to it which becomes more apparent when listening to, in my opinion, the standout two tracks of the album that follow. Perfecty placed platform to leap into the vocal magnificence that is to follow...enjoy...oh, if you were thinking of a Xmas theme, just in case, Kate's 'December Will be Magic Again' is a must, alongside 'Ring Out Solstice Bell's' by Jethro Tull, 'In dulce jubilo' by Oldfield, chuck in Lake's 'I believe in Father Christmas' for the ELP brigade on here and 'Guadete' by Steeleye Span...and thats Xmas sorted courtesy of the UK by your new producer, thats me btw...and have Mrs JP join you...so put some blinking pants on!!

I already mention this is one of the other vids, but man it's really cool to sort of rediscover this album through you. She's my number one, but i remember being thrown off by this sudden shift into man woman dinamics that rang very autobiographical. As a young man i was atracted to Kate's histrionic qualities, and imagined narratives. This songs felt so mundane at the time. This 2 tracks in particular is were this album used to loose me. Now i can focus more on all the interesting asepcts of arrangement and production. I love the begining and end sections of The Sensual World. Im glad your reaching the end. Excited.

I hadn't noticed how oddly structured Between a man and a woman is. It's actually very interesting. I would argue it's not so much a song, but a kind of interlude????...

Kate's own words: " It's about a relationship being a very finely balanced thing that can be easily thrown off by a third party. The whole thing really came from a line in 'The Godfather', during some family argument, when Marlon Brando says, "Don't interfere, it's between a man and a woman." It's exploring the idea of trying to keep a relationship together, how outside forces can break into it... Rubbish really, but I quite like the cello." - Kate Bush Encyclopedia

I know you've said you listened to _The Dreaming_ on your own time, but I'd still love to hear an album review on it, if possible, given it's widely considered her most challenging album. It's got some of my favorite songs of hers ("Sat in Your Lap," "Suspended in Gaffa," the title track) and, of course, some of her most 'out there' songs ("Leave It Open," "Houdini," "Get Out of My House"). But anyway, I'd vote for _Never for Ever_ as your next album of hers to do, if you haven't heard it already.
