Dave, I found that informative and helpful, I will be using these tips to buff up a tow hitch shaft and bush on a trailer. As an Australian I am pretty positive that with your knowledge of sand paper/emery cloth you would be a dead certainty for a spot in the Australian Cricket side.

I like your idea of rolling the paper around a dowel and peeling off as it gets worn. I have also used double-backed carpet tape to attach the paper, but of course when it wears out, that buffer is done.

well short answer... Sand and Emery. Sandpaper is usually used by woodworkers. Sand is mainly composed of Quartz. Emery papers use Emery which is different mineral and much tougher, so better for metals and tougher materials. Other common abrasives are aluminium oxide, or diamond. Emery works fine for gold and silver. Dave.
