Richard , it is to provide balance when shooting with one hand and to fend off or push someone out of the way in a self defense situation , like moving through a crowd or pushing someone out of the way whom you might be protecting from danger ..

Because there's nothing worse than being attacked by a donkey pinata... ;-) Developing environment awareness; overcoming disorientation; overcoming stress; honing drills/movements; getting trainees to focus on their reactions and movements. "With the blast shield down, I can't even see! How am I supposed to fight?"
